Lesson Plan - REVISION Introduction

Topic: Number Sense Length of Lesson (estimated): 25 30 minutes VA Standards of Learning: K.2 The student, given a set containing 15 or fewer concrete objects, will a) tell how many are in the set by counting the number of objects orally; b) write the numeral to tell how many are in the set; and c) select the corresponding numeral from a given set of numerals Cognitive Objectives Students will: Count orally the number of objects in a set containing 15 concrete objects, using one-to-one correspondence, and identify the corresponding numeral. Identify written numerals from 0 through 15 represented in random order. Select the numeral from a given set of numerals that corresponds to a set of 15 or fewer concrete objects. Write a numeral that corresponds to a set of 15 or fewer concrete objects. Construct a set of objects that corresponds to a given numeral, including an empty set. Materials/Technology and Advanced Preparation Drawing paper, pre-folded into five rows Numeric cards showing numerals from 0 to 15 and the corresponding number of objects Bingo chips (magnetic) or other counters Teaching and Learning Sequence Introduction/Anticipatory Set Gather the students on the rug in the reading corner and read an illustrated story featuring the counting of dots. As each illustration is shown, have the class count the dots aloud.

Introduce vocabulary (set, empty set, numeral, number, zero (0), one (1), two (2), three (3), four (4), five (5), six (6), seven (7), eight (8), nine (9), ten (10), eleven (11), twelve (12), thirteen (13), fourteen (14), fifteen (15), more fewer, same

Give each student a large piece of paper pre-folded into five rows Model the upcoming activity by randomly choosing one of the numeral cards (each card should display the numeral and the corresponding number of objects). In the first row of your pre-folded paper, draw the number of dots that corresponds with the numeral card.

Lesson Development

Continue to randomly select cards and instruct the students to draw the the number of dots starting with row one on the front of their folded paper. Have students place a bingo chip or other counter over each dot, counting as they go. After they finish counting, have the students remove the bingo chips from the paper.

Call the next random number and have the students repeat this step until the five rows on the front and the 5 rows on the back are filled with dots. Instruct the students to write the correct numeral by each row of dots. Have the students point to the first row of dots on the front side of the paper. Ask them to call out the number they had written. Have the students identify which row has the least number of dots. The most number of dots. Ask the students to find the row that is the same to their neighbors paper.

Closure Show a numeral card and ask the students to create a set of objects that represent that number. Question, How do you know that your set represents this numeral?, (look for one to one correspondence) Show the students a set of objects. What numeral represents this set? How can you show this numeral another way? Ask the students to think of a number between 1 and 15 and ask them to write in their notebooks. Ask a volunteer to tell you his/her number. Using that number, brainstorm how it could be illustrated with a picture (ex. Five , 5, five rings, star, V, 5 dots, etc). Homework (If applicable) Using their chosen number, draw at least ten pictures that represent it. Assessment Formative Walk around the room during the activity to observe one-to-one correspondence. Listen for Summative The homework will be graded for completeness and added to student folder.
