Kindercarrots
For the New Year our Kindercarrots will be setting some new goals in Reading and Math. Well be stretching ourselves and working hard to reach those goals as we focus on understanding coding techniques, syllable division, and writing strategies. Well also introduce our addition and subtraction fact cards, use and count tally marks, and count money. Here is a closer look at some of our lessons for the month:
Week #1 January 3rd - 6th Manipulate sounds within words, introduce digraph ai and ay, read and code compound words, write numbers 60-63, count with dimes and pennies, use tally marks to count by 5s, and create subtraction fact cards.

e hope everyone was able to enjoy a wonderful Holiday Season with good food, lots of laughter, and plenty of homemade memories. We cant wait to see all of those bright smiling faces and hear stories of Christmas fun as school reconvenes Tuesday, January 3rd. A very special thank you to all who gave so generously to our Scholarship Program. There are many families who will benefit from your kindness. If you would still like to donate to our Scholarship Fund come in any time and leave your donation at the front desk. We will be awarding the Scholarships this Spring. It may seem far down the road, but we are already preparing for the 2012-2013 school year. Registration will begin on January 1st. As always, we open preferred registration to families who are currently enrolled from January 1st to January 31st. We will be sending out a registration packet via email to all of our current students. You can also find registration packets on our website (www.kidsvillage.net) or pick one up at the front desk. Registration will be open to the public on February 1st. Many of our classes fill during preferred registration alone so dont delay! Mark your calendars for Parent Teacher Conferences on January 12th and 13th. We have decided to change things up and provide an Open House style conference on Thursday, January 12th from 1:00pm-7:00pm, and Friday, January 13th from 9:00am-3:00pm. No need to call and make an appointment, just come in when its convenient for you. Both our Academic and Workshop teachers will be available during both days to visit with you about the progress your child has made this year. There will be No School on both the 12th and 13th. We are excited to announce the date for our 4th annual Daddy Daughter Ball, a very special night with dancing, crafts, photos, and a fabulous meal. Tickets will go on sale starting February 1st, and our Daddy Daughter Ball will take place on Saturday, February 25th. It is sure to be a night our Dads and their daughters wont soon forget. Watch your email for more information to come. We hope you spent plenty of time during your Holiday Break reading good books with your child. Remember to bring in your December R.E.A.D.S. calendar as soon as possible. Lets start the New Year right by making a goal of reading every day! Some fun Winter books to help you reach your reading goals are: Snow Crazy by Tracy Gallup, Time to Sleep by Denis Fleming, and The Hat by Jan Bret. Ski School begins on January 11th for all those who have registered and continues every Wednesday through February 15th. Please arrive at Sundance at 12:30pm, lessons begin at 1:00pm. A few things to take note of this month: Dont forget to show your School Spirit on January 5th and 20th by wearing your KV T-shirt; also, there will be no school on January 16th as we observe the birthday of Martin Luther King Jr.

Week #2 January 9th - 11th Review phonics rules and coding, match letter sounds, study subtraction and addition facts, identify place value for tens and ones, and illustrate story problems. Week #3 January 17th - 20th Alphabetize words on a list, turn phrases into sentences, introduce digraph ch, review punctuation, write numbers 64-68, identify even and odd numbers, add two digit numbers using dimes and pennies, and create and run a class store. Week #4 January 23rd - 27th Sight word review, introduce the final s and soft c sound, introduce digraph ow and combination ir and ur, write numbers 69-72, add and subtract by 2, practice using Mental Math, and solve doubles plus one facts. Week #5 January 30th - February 3rd Alphabetize names, introduce new vowel pattern vcv, code with syllable divisions, write numbers 73-77, identify and create congruent shapes, and add 2 digit numbers.

You could help your child understand these values by encouraging them to set a few new goals and motivate them to do their best.

Kitchen
The food pyramid helps us make healthy choices with the foods we eat. Even our Kindercarrots can learn to eat well and take care of their bodies. We will learn all about the food groups throughout this month. Here are a few of the recipes for January: Week #1 - Tasty Tortilla Soup, Week #2 - EZ Chili, Week #3 - Banana Bread, Week #4 - Farm House Pizza, and Week #5 - Black Bean Soup

Music
We will put our listening skills to the test this month as we practice matching notes to values. Our Kindercarrots are also getting ready for their first Dramatic Performance by participating in Readers Theatre and acting out stories. We will be memorizing the poem Pussy Cat Pussy Cat as well.

Social Studies
France, Germany, Spain, and Italy; these are a few of the countries we will begin studying during our European Adventures this month. We will look at the culture, the language, and even some of the foods. We will also continue our Spanish Vocabulary by learning parts of the body.

Science
Are trees and plants living things? What about rocks and dirt? We will be learning to identify living and non-living things this month. Well also study underwater animals like various types of fish and mollusks.

Art
This month we will begin our Drawing Unit in Art. We will start by creating our own Self-Portrait after studying the Self-Portraits of Van Gogh, Rembrandt, and Picasso. We will learn the difference between a portrait and a landscape as well.
