Answer BOTH questions.

Write your answers in the spaces provided.
1.

Nerita atrementosa is a small snail which lives on rocks close to the sea. In an experiment
to investigate the effect of population density on survival rates, different numbers of
juvenile snails were enclosed in two 25 cm 25 cm quadrats covered with wire mesh.
They were left in their natural habitat for 3 months, after which time the number of live
snails was counted.
The investigation was then repeated with adult snails instead of juveniles.
A copy of the practical notebook from this investigation is shown below.

The sugar beet plant (Beta vulgaris) is a major source of table sugar (sucrose). This is
extracted from the swollen tap root of the plant. A diagram of a sugar beet plant is shown
below.

It has been claimed that a new variety of the sugar beet plant called beeter will produce
sucrose much faster than an older variety called slowcoach.
Design an investigation to test the hypothesis that beeter will produce sucrose at a faster
rate than slowcoach when both are grown in controlled conditions.
Sucrose is not a reducing sugar but can be treated with the enzyme sucrase to produce
fructose and glucose.
