Algebra 1 Unit 5, Lesson 3: Write the equation of a line, given slope and a point Objectives Students will be able

to determine the equation of a line, given its slope and a point on the line Unit Skills

Materials and Handouts Homework - Skills Test #8, two versions #5-3: Find - Name That Equation! Equations of Lines - Keynote and note-taking template Two Ways - Dont bite the hand that classwork packet - Homework #5-3 Time Activity 15 min Homework Check/Skills Test - Skills Test #8 - Binder check #1: check that students have a clearly marked section for algebra 1, and their readiness checkers/skills test logs in that section. 15 min Pair Work - Hand out the Name That Equation! sheet. Give students three verbal situations, and they need to figure out the equation of the lines. - The last equation is difficult to find graphically. Use this as a lead-in to why we might want to use an algebraic representation. 20 min Direct Instruction - Main Concept: Determine the Equation of a Line - Find the equation given slope = -5 and y-intercept of 8. (Note that yintercept means the same thing as starting point). This one is pretty easy. - Find the equation given slope = 4 and the line passes through (-2, -3). We can start writing the equation, to get y = 4x + [ ]. How can we find the starting point? Graph what we know and see where it crosses. We saw from the last problem in the previous handout that sometimes we need to use algebra. How can we accomplish this? Start with y = mx + b, plug in what we know, and solve for b. Then, write the equation: y = 4x + 5. - Find the equation given that it passes through (3, -5) and is parallel to y = -2x + 9. Plot the point (3, -1) and graph the line y = -2x + 9. The line we want is parallel, so what does that tell us? Graph the parallel line, and then write the equation. Go through the algebraic steps, noting that this is the same thing as the previous example its just a different way of telling us the slope in the problem. 30 min Individual Work - Hand out the Dont bite the hand that worksheet (from Nasco) attached to templates with graph paper and space to work it out algebraically. Students must do each of the ten problems using both methods and turn in their work by the end of class. (There are only 9 templates to save paper, so they can double up one).
