GENERALIZ ED

PETITMAL / ABSENCE

A petit mal seizure is the term commonly given to a staring spell, most commonly called an "absence seizure." It is a brief (usually less than 15 seconds) disturbance of brain function due to abnormal electrical activity in the brain.

MYOCLO NIC

is brief, involuntary twitching of a muscle or a group of muscles. It describes a medical sign and, generally, is not a diagnosis of a disease. Brief twitches are perfectly normal.

seizures involving the neck, shoulder and upper arms. Such seizures often occur shortly after the patient wakes up in

TONIC

The myoclonic twitches are usually caused by sudden muscle contractions; they also can result from brief lapses of contraction. The classic type of epileptic seizure consisting of two phases to a tonic-clonic seizure -- the tonic phase and the clonic phase. In the tonic phase the body becomes entire rigid, and in the clonic phase there is uncontrolled jerking.
