Class VT 642 Diesel Multiple Unit DESIRO

for German Rail

With the Class VT 642 unit, German Rail ordered 150 modern, environmentally compatible diesel multiple units for its regional passenger rail service. The VT 642 concept enables non-electrified secondary lines with low to medium traffic densities to be operated profitably and with enhanced passenger appeal. The use of mass-produced bus components in the VT 642 assures low investment and operating costs and thus increases the appeal and the economy of regional rail service. The characteristic features of the VT 642 are as follows: a high degree of passenger comfort, thanks to 60 % low-floor section and the well-appointed interior design that is oriented to the requirements of high-speed operation lightweight aluminum bodyshell construction high availability due to the serviceproven components from industrial mass production environmentally compatible drive system, featuring diesel engines which comply with the limits stipulated by the Euro II emissions standard suitable for multiple running and one-man operation passenger information service with modular upgrade capability modular interior configuration (seats, luggage racks, lights, interior lining, etc.) Floor height Total length over couplers Empty weight (DIN 25008) Technical Data Vehicle class Type of drive Carbody Track gauge Maximum permissible speed Diesel engine rating Number of seats 1st class 2nd class of which folding seats DESIRO VT 642 Diesel-mechanical aluminium integral construction 1435 mm 120 km/h 2 x 275 kW 12 111 13 575 mm 41.700 mm 68.2 t

Bodyshell Aluminum integral construction, made of extruded sections and fiberglassreinforced monocoque nose section, sandwich-bonded to the bodyshell. Insulation Noise-attenuating insulation sprayed onto the inside surfaces of the mainframe. Insulating mats in the floor, on the side walls and in the ceiling. Interior furnishings 1st class compartment with comfortable seats in a 2+1 arrangement, open 2nd class compartment with four seats in each row, seats arranged facing one another. Luggage racks fitted on the side walls with integrated continuous strip lighting. Multipurpose areas with folding seats, fixtures for stowing bicycles, baby carriages and bulky luggage. Handicapped toilet with closed system, optional retrofitting of a retractable boarding ramp. Glass partitions separate the boarding and exiting areas from the rest of the passenger compartment. Billboard area and emergency call station with a link to the driver in the boarding and exiting areas. Modular inside walls made of fiberglass-reinforced plastic, easy-care plastic floor covering. Uninterrupted contours leading from one section to the next with double bellows.

Ergonomic drivers cab design. IBIS integrated on-board information system with PA system for the passenger compartment, digital station announcement, destination indicators at the front and on each side of the unit, internal next-stop annunciators in the low-floor area. Prepared for the installation of a ticket machine and a ticket validator. Heating/ventilation/air conditioning Two roof-mounted air conditioning units on each car and one air conditioning unit per drivers cab. Coolant compressor driven by the diesel engine.

Warm-water recirculating-air heating systems. Utilization of the heat absorbed by the diesel engine coolant. Oil-fired supplementary heaters for preheating and whenever insufficient heat is dissipated by the cooling water. Separate water circuits for the drivers cab and the passenger compartment. Convection heaters in the passenger compartment, blower-type heaters in the boarding areas. Separate pressurization systems for the driver's cab and the passenger compartment integrated into the air conditioning units. Air blown out above the windows in the passenger compartments. Static roof-mounted fans take care of the ventilation.

Multipurpose area Doors Convenient stepless boarding and exiting with a clear opening width of approx. 1240 mm. Centrally driven electric twinleaf swing plug doors. Acoustic warning of the closing operation. Speed-dependent door inhibiting facility. Swing-open glass door leading to the 1st class compartment. Windows Large windows, made of laminated safety glass, bonded into position flush with the outer skin. Six windows in each section with tip-down panel at the top. Impactproof driving cab windscreen made of laminated safety glass. Swing-open side windows in the drivers cab. Running gear Two powered bogies, one non-powered Jakobs bogie with rubber-sprung primary suspension and level-controlled airspring secondary suspension. Three axle-mounted brake disks for each powered bogie and two wheel-mounted brake disks for each axle in the Jakobs bogie. Electromagnetic track brakes in the powered bogies. Microprocessor-controlled wheel slip/slide protection. Drive unit One autonomous drive unit is arranged under each high floor area between the boarding/exiting area and the powered bogie. Each drive unit consists of a turbocharged, intercooled 6-cylinder diesel engine and a mechanical 5-speed automatic transmission with starting transformer and integrated retarder. The engine cooling water is recooled in an underfloor cooling system with hydrostatic fan drive. The gearoil heat exchanger is incorporated into the cooling water circuit. The diesel engine, transmission and cooling system are mounted in a common support frame. The tractive power is transmitted to the axle reverse drive in the powered bogie via a cardan shaft and to the axle drive of the leading wheelset via another cardan shaft. Electric control One DC 24 V electric train supply for each section of the unit. Train supply circuits fed by a generator or battery. Central DC 24 V electric train supply for those loads which perform control, monitoring and safety functions. Power fed from both batteries. Connection to an external urban network possible. Central vehicle control is via a SIBAS 32 control unit with diagnostic memory. Multiple running of up to three VT 642 units possible.
