Ive known my whole life that that was where I was going to get married. Since I was a baby its been my favorite place in the world. Im not a local but I feel like one for that one week a year Im out there. Liz Tinker, who married Dan Harris 9.17.2011 It was so perfectly New England. Maria Ferreira, who married Barry Graham 9.10.2011 Our guests all said it was the best wedding theyd ever been to. Friends from overseas called it Americana at its best: a quaint small town. There arent many places like this left in the country, where everythings walkable and everybodys friendly. Jackies favorite picture is the one of the couple in the tall grass (top right). One of their favorite parts of the day was tooling around the island with Trevor taking pictures. We kept asking him, Can you do this? Can you do that? says Jackie, and he was so accomodating, up for anything and great fun.
The Atlantic Inn 7.26.2011 She: 27, unemployed, from Glastonbury, Connecticut. He: 30, service technician for a private water company, from South Windsor, Connecticut. Now live in Glastonbury, Connecticut. How did you meet? Through mutual friends almost 10 years ago. How did he/she propose? I talked to her dad first about it. Actually, I called her grandfather, her dad, and her brothers. I guess Im kind of old fashioned. Her grandfather cried when I talked to him. Jackie: I was outside gardening and he came out on the porch and said I have a question for you. He totally took me off guard. How did Block Island become your wedding destination? My family has a house on B.I. so its like a second home to me and as soon as we started dating Bill came out too. We wanted it to be part of our story. Bill: I like the small town atmosphere, its a more relaxed setting for a wedding than running around with limos and stuff.
How many guests did you have? 17. How did Block Island make your wedding special? It wasnt just, Thanks for coming and see ya later. We went shopping, hung out at the beach, went to Aldos for breakfast. It was very relaxed. What did guests tell you about the wedding afterward? They all loved the food. Everyones favorite food item? The steak, it had some sort of au jus with it and then these little french fries. Bill: I dont remember those. Jackie: Thats because I took yours off your plate when you turned around. What is your most beautiful memory of your wedding day? Jackie: Walking down the aisle, even though I was shaking. And when I messed up in my vows and then Bill flubbed up intentionally to ease the tension. Bill: When we were [taking pictures] at the Southeast Light, Jackie and I had walked out by the flagpole 100 yards away from all the others and it was just a moment to look at each other and say We did it, a moment to be Mr. and Mrs. on our own.
Where was your honeymoon? We spent the rest of the week out there with our family and one of best things was we could bring both our dogs, a pug and Boston terrier, theyre like family. Did anything unexpected happen? The tailor sized my pants wrong. I spent the majority of the day literally holding my pants up. Other highlights? I almost spaced on getting music for the ceremony. We were going over the schedule a day or two before and Brad [Marthens, owner of the Atlantic] said you dont have music for walking down the aisle. I said, Oh yeah I guess I should have music. He got his niece to come play the violin! Kinga [from Marks Beachcomber] did my hair. I gave her some photos and somehow she came up with an idea that incorporated all three of the looks I wanted! And Ray Torrey, who officiated, made it so special, so personal. It was like he was reading from the heart for someone he knew really well. People are still talking about... the cake. Everyone said it was the best carrot cake theyd ever had. Even though we had such a small wedding I wanted a big cake. We ate it every night forever; it took up most of the frig.

Mansion Beach 6.18.2011 She: 36, formerly in marketing, now stay-at-home mom of 2-year-old Sophia; from Wisconsin and Maryland. He: John Horvack, 44, attorney in New Haven, from Milford, Connecticut. Now live in Milford, Connecticut. How did you meet? I was in Rockefeller Center for a seminar and I met Johns best friend from childhood. She said, I think I found you a husband and set us up on a date! What was your first impression of him? I drove up from New Jersey and I was all dolled up and he showed up in a stained Tshirt and ripped shorts. I thought, Okay, I guess hes got nothing to prove! Rebuttal: I was just trying to be myself ! What was your first impression of her? She talked on her cell phone the whole time. Rebuttal: It was about the person taking care of my dog! How did Block Island become your wedding destination? Its our special place. He took me there a few months after we started dating. It was pouring rain the whole time and still it was one of the most romantic dates ever. After that, we started coming out for a week every September. How did you choose the Cushman House on Mansion Beach? We were on vacation out there walking on the beach and we saw this ginormous white tent over the dunes. I took a picture with my phone and emailed it to Sullivan Real Estate and said, Tell me what house this is. How many guests did you have? 56. How did Block Island make your wedding special? We tried to use as many local businesses as possible to support and thank the island. I loved working with Sean [Kivlehan, of Block Island Gourmet] and Mona [Dwyer, Block Island Wedding Planner]. And Suzanne [Nolter, of Blazing Star Farm] did a gorgeous job with the flowers from her farm, they were a little more wild than the usual.

Sean was amazing and I love love love Mona. If it wasnt for her the day wouldnt have been so perfect, so special. I actually cried when I said goodbye to her and I had to keep myself from calling her, telling myself, She has other brides to focus on now. Everyones favorite food item? Apparently the raw bar, but I didnt get any. By the time we got back [from taking pictures], everything was gone! What do you think was the most unique thing about your wedding? I did a lot myself during Sophias naptimes. For souvenirs, I collected 60 big round rocks and painted them aqua with silhouettes of the island; I put a dot where the house was and wrote BI 2011. Im a perfectionist and I couldnt get the color right; I wanted it to match the ribbons. Im still finding aqua paint all over place. We also painted driftwood so each table had the name of a place we love out there. Were the logistics of a beach wedding challenging? No, it was at three in the afternoon in June so there wasnt really anyone on the beach right there. We rented the chairs and Sean had it all set up on the beach. We did spend a lot of time moving and throwing rocks to make an aisle. What did guests tell you about the wedding afterward? Oh they loved it. Most of them said it was the most beautiful wedding they had been to. Standing on the deck and lawn of that house was just breathtaking. What is your most beautiful memory of your wedding day? Andrea: That first moment he saw me when I walked over the dunes. He peered up and started crying. It was such an amazing moment! John: Walking back up the dunes after wed said our vows. Do you have advice for others who wed here? Get as many island businesses involved as you can, because that gives your wedding much more flavor. And no one tells you how bad your heart breaks when its over! I was just getting in the groove when Mona said it was time to wrap up. Where was your honeymoon? Block Island was our honeymoon!
Will your bridesmaids wear their dresses again? My niece might. Other highlights? Megan [Mitchell, a former B.I. student now at the Rhode Island School of Design] did our video. She was awesome. She was in love with my dress. Where did you get your dress? Oh, it reminded me of the bubbling surf, thats why I picked it out! I got it at Kleinfelds, its Romona Keveza. I tried on at least 20 dresses. I had Diane shes on [the TV show] Say Yes to the Dress all the time. I picked out a Badgley Mischka dress and actually bought it. I met the designer and got caught up in the moment. A few days later I called and said, Put a hold on it, Im coming back in. I went back and I was working with my $6,000 budget and there just wasnt anything I loved at that price range. You have to love it! I kept walking by this one, touching it and finally I said, Bring me that dress. The girl I was working with said, Youre gonna love it and youre gonna kill me. My mom helped me pay for it because if John knew how much that dress cost, he wouldnt have married me. Any regrets? Yes when I look back at how quickly the day went. Thats the first time Ive said that out loud. Still, it was such a central part of the wedding; everyone was so blown away by it, including me. What was your most bridezilla moment? When the girl Id signed a hair and makeup contract with backed out four weeks before the wedding. Things happen for a reason, though, because Michael Aaron [of Koru Ecospa] made the wedding day so much fun, so much better! He was fabulous. And were friends now, we stay in touch. His most clueless groom moment? We spent a lot of time focusing on what shoes he was going to wear and finally found a really nice pair of white suede bucks for $400, the most hes ever spent on shoes. Were walking down the aisle and I look down and hes wearing flip flops! But they were perfect, they matched the entire vibe of the wedding. Of course I wore Jimmy Choos but thats another thing. People are still talking about... John: Her shoes. Andrea: The dress.

Kate and Ron added all sorts of island flavor to their wedding. For favors, they gave donations to the Block Island Conservancy; and guests signed a book of island postcards put out by The Nature Conservancy. Each table had a photo with a description and history of an iconic island place or figure.
Rose Farm Inn 9.10.2011 She: 34, attorney, from North Attleboro, Massachusetts. He: 34, works at Citizens Bank, from North Attleboro, Massachusetts. Now live in Pawtucket, Rhode Island. How did you meet? Ron and my brother were friends for years so we hung out. How do you cross that line with your brothers friend? At another friends wedding as it turns out! How did he/she propose? On Christmas Eve under the mistletoe. Ron: But I left the ring box on the bed so she kind of saw it coming. How did Block Island become your wedding destination? Ron: I spent lots of summers there growing up and Kate had come with us for the past couple years. We thought this would be a nice way to give back to our families, having them come for a week-long vacation. Why did you choose the Rose Farm Inn? We really liked that we could stay on the property with our families and that we could have the ceremony and the reception right there. From the tent you could see
the ocean on one side and meadows and stone walls on both sides, so you got the best of both island worlds. How many guests did you have? 80. How did Block Island make your wedding special? When youre there you feel like you could be in the Caribbean, but its an hour and a half ferry ride away! Favorite food item? Everyone ranted and raved about the cheese fries at Dead Eye Dicks on Friday night. What is your most beautiful memory of your wedding day? Ron: After the ceremony Mona wanted us to hide for a while so people would go up to the tent. She told us to go back to our hotel room, so we were hanging out on the back deck watching all our guests enjoy themselves from a distance. It was like an out-ofbody experience. Kate: Walking down the aisle, it surprised me how nervous I was; I think it was because of all the people looking at me. But as I came around the corner and saw Ron I was like, These are my people! Seeing him really calmed me down. Do you have advice for others who wed here? Ron: Do it!
Kate: And hire Mona. She was a lifesaver. From the moment we hired her I felt that everything was under control. Other highlights? We went to the Kittens after our reception ended at 9. By the end of the night, Kate was on the stage with the band [Never in Vegas] in her wedding dress singing Journey [Dont Stop Believing]. Kate: They invited me up. Did anything unexpected happen? My dad walked me down the aisle, shook Rons hand and then walked back to his seat. I said, What about me? and he came back to give me a hug. What was your most bridezilla moment? The morning of the wedding my mother suggested that my lip color ought to be a bit darker and I completely bit her head off. She said, Why dont you talk to her to my college roommate who made the same suggestion. I said Okay. I felt really bad about that. His most clueless groom moment? I left the rings at the house I was staying at. Also I didnt know exactly when to slide the ring on her finger; she had to say, Well arent you gonna put it on me? People are still talking about... the weather. There was literally not a cloud in the sky.

Paynes Harborview Inn 9.17.2011 She: 27, in human resources for a pharmaceutical company, from Bristol, Connecticut. He: 30, works in drug safety for Genuine, from Keene, New Hampshire. Now live in Boston. How did you meet? We both went to Keene State, but we didnt know each other in college. When I moved to Boston one of my friends invited me to a housewarming and it turns out Dan was her neighbor. On our first date, we went to watch a Red Sox game at a pub around the corner. He didnt put the car in park and it ended up rolling into that neighbors car. After a year we moved in together. After two years we knew we were in it for the long haul. He proposed four years later almost to the day. How did he/she propose? We were home in Connecticut for a family barbecue and Dan asked my dads permission. The next day we went down to the diamond district in New York for a ring and he wouldnt let me wear it. After we got home we were having dinner and he started saying the most amazing things and before I knew it he was down on one knee. How did Block Island become your wedding destination? Ive known my whole life that that was where I was going to get married. Since I was a baby its been my favorite place in the world. Im not a local, but I feel like one for that one week a year Im out there. Why did you choose Paynes Harborview Inn? The bridal suite! We were like, Oh, I could definitely spend a weekend in here! And it was just gorgeous out back with all the sailboats. It was the perfect size and affordable.
How many guests did you have? 120. A bunch of people told us, Oh youre having a Block Island wedding youll have all your guests show up. Sure enough only five people rsvpd no. How did Block Island make your wedding special? Just the whole ambiance of the island and the fact that all our family and friends were together for the first time and could see why we love it so much. What did guests tell you about the wedding afterward? They just said it was the most fun wedding theyd ever been to and they loved the island. Dan: A lot of our friends had never been to Block Island, had never heard of it, and now theyve already made plans to come back. Im like, All our friends are gonna invade our peaceful little island. Everyones favorite food item? The Manisses catered it and everyone seemed to love the salmon mousse. What is your most beautiful memory of your wedding day? Dan: When it came time to see Liz and she was standing at the altar arbor. Thats when the waterworks started. My wife did not cry once and I cried the whole time. Liz: For me it was the whole thing, there was just so much emotion and pure joy radiating through the whole day. We had everyone crying! What do you think was the most unique thing about your wedding? My brother played a song on his guitar for us for our first dance; that was the first time I cried. And my grandfather married us.
Do you have advice for others who wed here? Dan: When you feel youve given your family and friends enough info about the island, give them more. Otherwise youll get phone calls a week before. Liz: Dont worry about the small things; the day is going to go how it goes, but its all about the person youre walking down the aisle toward. And take dance lessons. We didnt! Other highlights? Mark [of Marks Beachcomber] did our hair, which turned out beautifully and his personality is just so over the top and hilarious. The Manisses catered and Elizabeth was such a great consultant. I had all these ideas and she never shot them down; shed just say Heres why you might want to consider this instead. And in every case she was 100 percent correct. Oh, and we did our rehearsal dinner at The Oar. Thats my favorite place on the island; I always stop there for a lobster roll and a Miami Vice, which is half daiquiri and half pina colada. We did a baggo tournament there. What was your most bridezilla moment? I asked my maid of honor to make sure she got a French manicure before the wedding. I really did that! I mean does that really matter? Your most clueless groom moment? Everything was pretty laid out for me. Liz: I asked his opinion, he gave it to me, and if he was wrong I told him he was wrong! People are still talking about... how much fun they had. Would you have changed anything? Liz: Not a single thing. Dan: Nope, not one thing.

Lizs aunt made the cake for them. Shes not a pro but she has a real gift for this, says Liz. Her grandfather, a minister, married them. One of the best decisions they made, says the couple, was having only her sister and his brother as a wedding party. No drama, no bickering, says Liz. Ive been on that side as a bridesmaid and its tough!

Sullivan House 7.30.2011 She: 34, VP of Ralph Lauren in merchandising for Asia, from New Jersey. He: 31, in banking for GE Capital, from Long Island. Now live in New York City. How did you meet? Through mutual colleagues. How did he/she propose? We were on Block Island for a vacation week and the final day was my birthday, so we decided to go to Newport instead of driving home. He proposed on the hotel balcony overlooking the harbor. I never got a birthday present, just the ring! How did Block Island become your wedding destination? One of the things we always wanted was a destination where guests could spend more than a couple hours in a room in a hotel. And Monica and I shared so many great memories on Block Island. Why did you choose the Sullivan House? The Sullivan House was always the first thing wed see coming in to the island on the ferry; it always looked so perfect up there. We booked it two weeks after the engagement. It was perfect. We loved how its perched on the hill, a wide open space with water on both sides. And the sunsets cant be beat. How many guests did you have? 175.
What did guests tell you about the wedding afterward? They all said it was the best wedding theyd ever been to. Friends from overseas called it Americana at its best: a quaint small town. There arent many places like this left in the country, where everythings walkable and everybodys friendly. How did Block Island make your wedding special? There was so much to do. Thursday night we had a casual dinner at The Oar. We hung out on the lawn all night playing Cornhole [or Baggo, the beanbag toss game]. People rented bikes and toured the little zoo. One couple rented a pontoon. A bunch of people painted The Rock... Everyones favorite food item? The halibut. We did surf and turf, halibut and filet. What do you think was the most unique thing about your wedding? Monica: To me, it was getting married right on the harbor. When I came out of the Sullivan House all the people in boats were cheering and screaming, saying Dont do it to Sean. Sean: The bonfire that went on for three hours. We all walked down to Scotch Beach after the reception, where we had a huge bonfire and pre-made smores all set up. What is your most beautiful memory of your wedding day? Sean: Monica walking out of the Sullivan House, seeing her coming down to get married. Monica: When the sun was setting, light was coming in the tent, people were inside dancing, people were outside relaxing. Just looking around at so many people whod come from so far for us.
Do you have advice for others who wed here? Make a weekend of it. Better yet, get friends out there for the week. Come the day of the wedding, theyre all already friends. Did anything unexpected happen? Because I work in the Asia division I had friends come in from Australia, China, Hong Kong. We had 40 guests, some of whom had flown in from Asia and Australia, on a particular train that broke down twice. They missed the New London ferry, but they made it in time for the wedding. Another couple who flew in from Hong Kong drove to Westerly to fly in but there was too much fog. They couldnt drive to Point Judith or theyd miss their return flight. A stranger who saw their predicament drove them to the ferry. Where was your honeymoon? Bora Bora for two weeks. We left Tuesday morning. Will your bridesmaids wear their dresses again? Probably not. I had to buy all new bridesmaids dresses four weeks before the wedding. Id ordered champagne satin and they came in tan polyester. Some of the girls only got their dresses a week before the wedding. People are still talking about... the sunset at the Sullivan House. Would you have changed anything? I would have convinced more people to share houses together. All the hotels were wonderful, but people who rented houses had an even better time. They all said they were going to come back every year with their families.

One of Seans favorite things to do on Block Island is to get saltwater taffy (center) from Blocks of Fudge. With just a weeks notice, he says, they put together 40 pounds for the couple to give out as favors. They even delivered it to us, says Monica. They were so nice! In case that didnt sate the sweet tooths Monica and Sean also put together make-yourown smores packets for guests to use at the post-reception bonfire on Scotch Beach (left). My cousins from Scotland and friends from China had never been to a bonfire or eaten or even heard of smores before, says Monica. They just followed everyone elses lead. 19

Sullivan House 8.20.2011 She: in pharmaceutical advertising for Juice, from Rockland County, New York. He: in pharmaceutical advertising for Grey, an army brat who grew up in Japan, South Carolina, Germany, and West Point, New York. Now live in New York City. How did you meet? At work. How did he/she propose? We were snowboarding in Mount Snow in Vermont. It was the last run of the day and I fell and hurt myself. I was on the verge of tears. He pulled out the ring and I forgot all about my broken leg. How did Block Island become your wedding destination? Wed gone to Block Island the past three years on vacation and its just the greatest place. We were in complete agreement. Why did you choose the Sullivan House? It was December and we wanted to get married in the summer. We started calling everyone. The Sullivan House had August 20th and 27th available. We chose the 20th arbitrarily. If wed chosen the 27th, it would have been Hurricane Irene! The Sullivan House was great. [Owners] Sean and Rosalee were amazing.
How many guests did you have? 60. How did Block Island make your wedding special? My family is in Jersey and his is in upstate New York. It was so good to get them together. Over the course of the weekend we got to take them to all our favorite island places. We went to The National, had a rehearsal dinner at the Spring House, and went to the Atlantic to watch the sunset, have drinks and visit the animals. My brother has a shopping addiction, so he hit every store and loved it. Daves brother is training for a marathon, so he was out running all the time. At the end of the day theyd discuss whose afternoon had been more grueling. What did guests tell you about the wedding afterward? They didnt want to leave. They said it was the most fun wedding. Even the ones who dont like weddings said they liked this one! What is your most beautiful memory of your wedding day? When we went up to the [Southeast] Lighthouse to take pictures. Its our favorite landmark on the island and not to brag, but we looked really good! So everyone was cheering us on and congratulating us like we were celebrities. Did anything unexpected happen? We planned a bonfire on the beach and I forgot the money to pay the people who had set it up. I said Id bring cash, but I had no pockets and I had a few other things on my mind. So we had to find them the next
day and pay them; they were really cool about it. They had set it up and cleaned it up. They brought a cooler down to us on Crescent Beach. I stayed in my dress the whole time. My mother was appalled but I didnt want to take it off! Do you have advice for others who wed here? I would say you get a little nervous because the islands far away and you cant see and touch everything. But everybody there is good at their jobs. You get there and it all falls into place. The casual vibe of Block Island will take care of things for you! Will your bridesmaids wear their dresses again? Yes. Where did you get your dress? J. Crew. Other highlights? Aaron from Koru did my hair and makeup. He has a salon right near where I work in New York, a block away from my office. So we met up there. Jamie from La Bella Rose did the flowers. She was great, really patient with me. She helped me figure out what I was looking for. And Cody, our photographer and friend, said it looks nice if you throw rose petals for photos. So the day of the wedding I asked Jamie if she had extra rose petals; she got 10 bags together for us at the last minute. Would you have changed anything? No.

The group throwing rose petals is Jesss favorite photo because its about me and Tim, but its also about all the loved ones, about bringing the two families together. The Atlantic Inn made the cake. It was delicious and beautiful, says Jess. And the penguins topper? I have always loved penguins and thought those particular ones were so sweet. Plus she had the same veil as me! Jess found the topper on Etsy.
Atlantic Inn 9.17.2011 She: 30, visual merchandiser, from Rhinebeck New York. He: 33, salesman, from Long Island. Now live in Tarrytown, New York. How did you meet? Tim noticed me when I worked at this restaurant in Rhinebeck with an old high school friend of his. But I was dating someone else. Then one day I had a dream that Tim was sitting at my familys Thanksgiving table and I was telling our mutual friend about it when Tim walked through the door. I told him and he knew he had me. Tim: I already knew I had her. How did he/she propose? We were living in Atlanta until about four months ago and we decided to go to Asheville for the weekend. I woke her up early and said, Lets take a walk. I took her to the botanical gardens and I found the perfect spot up a little staircase. But she wouldnt come up there. She wanted to stay in the shade, so she was like, No whatever you want to look at, go look at it. I finally coaxed her up and Im like, Hey, read this here. She turned around and I was down on one knee. She thought Id hurt myself !
How did Block Island become your wedding destination? Wed planned to get married in Asheville this past fall but my company was bought by another company and we had an opportunity to move back to New York. Wed both been to B.I. with our families when we were younger and we had great memories of it. How many guests did you have? 30. They all stayed at The Atlantic. How did Block Island make your wedding special? Everyone was there for the whole weekend, so you run into your guests everywhere. Its like your own little island for you and your friends. What did guests tell you about the wedding afterward? Everyone talked about how much they loved the feeling of getting on the boat and leaving everything behind. Once you hop on that ferry you are away from everything. It puts you at ease. You feel miles and miles away, but youre just a stones throw from home. You can have a beautiful destination wedding without incurring a huge expense. What is your most beautiful memory of your wedding day? Tim: Standing under the arbor with the Atlantic in the foreground and the ocean behind, watching
Jess walk down from the hotel to where I was. Its something Ill never forget. Jess: Hearing his vows to me. They were really sincere and from the heart. Do you have advice for others who wed here? Have the ceremony where the venue is. Right after the wedding we had drinks and appetizers ready, it just flowed. Where was your honeymoon? We left for Italy the next day. Other highlights? I thank God for Mona [Dwyer, wedding planner]. She was so wonderful, I would recommend her to anyone. Shes not pushy but gives great advice and is totally on top of things. What was your most bridezilla moment? I didnt really have any. My mom and my sister really helped me out, so a lot of my not freaking out was them being there to support me. Your most clueless groom moment? I was out screwing around with my cousin at that animal farm looking at llamas and emus, and Mona comes tearing down the hill, saying, You need to be outside in 15 minutes all dressed. I was still in shorts and flip flops.

Sunnyside, her familys island home 6.4.2011 She: 36, massage therapist, from Greenwich, Connecticut. He: 38, environmental geologist, from Moraga, California. Now live in Boulder, Colorado. How did you meet? We met out here in Boulder. I came back from skiing and Dave was consoling my roommate whod just gone through a breakup. My dog, who doesnt like anyone, was curled up on the couch next to him, and so our relationship started. How did he/she propose? Well I actually talked to [her dad] John Lehman first. We were repairing the front door at Sunnyside and we schemed together how to do it. He said, Why not just do it today over lunch? which was like an hour away. It was Memorial Day, a traditional work weekend at Sunnyside so everyone was there, 16 family members. I dropped to one knee and asked her. Heather: I was shocked and amazed. I was also sweaty and covered in paint. How did Block Island become your wedding destination? Heather: Ive always wanted to get married out here. Dave: For Heather its always felt like home and its such a beautiful atmosphere. It seemed perfect. When I was young I had fantasies about getting married on a mountaintop and having everyone choppered in. But that seems a bit unrealistic now. How many guests did you have? 62 or 63.
How did Block Island make your wedding special? The speed limit, everything seems to slow down there and it makes you feel like your vacation is being extended. What did guests tell you about the wedding afterward? They liked the isolation, having to take a boat to get here. And they were all talking about coming back. Everyones favorite food item? Kimberly [of Catering by Kimberly] did a knock-out job. Everyone loved the sliders. There were six different kinds, including lobster roll and crab cake. And the truffle mac and cheese was a huge hit. What do you think was the most unique thing about your wedding? Our friend Eric got ordained online so he could marry us. What is your most beautiful memory of your wedding day? Heather: The ceremony. I felt like I was vibrating a little bit. I loved what we said to each other. Dave: The moment I saw Heather right before the ceremony, coming down the stairs with her dad. It was such an overwhelming feeling. It was just such a great day, the greatest day of my life. Heather: He hadnt seen the dress, so that worked to my advantage. Did anything unexpected happen? The wind picked up right as we were getting married. I didnt realize until we got the pictures back, because those things are so light you cant feel them, but my veil was helicoptering around my head. I guess Eric ended up tucking it into the back of my dress.
Do you have advice for others who wed here? Pick up the B.I. Wedding Guide! I know that sounds so planned. But its a really great resource for people. It was nice to see what other people had done, lots of great ideas. Im very simple and looking through other wedding magazines the things just didnt resonate, they just showed me what I didnt want. The B.I. guide did show me what I might like to do. Because I had my dad and Sharon, I didnt need one but for others I think hiring someone whos an islander would be a big help. Other highlights? Heather: I liked the cake Aldos made. I worked for them for years as a teenager and even now I have a penchant for getting off the ferry and going straight there for an clair. So we had clairs on top of the cake. While we were getting ready to do the cake cutting my dad snuck up and took a bite out of one of the clairs! Oh, and the bonfire at the end of Graces Cove. We had a great moonrise! We told people to bring jeans and sweatshirts and we had a bonfire with sparklers and smores for the kids. Thats a memory Ive had forever of end-of-season bonfires on the beach, so I thought it would be nice for the kids to have that. Where was your honeymoon? Kuai in November. What was your most bridezilla moment? Apparently I wasnt interested enough in the details of putting the flowers together. Thats what my sister told me afterward. People are still talking about... the seafood. We have a lot of foodie friends and they loved Finns and Ernies and The Oar.

Six variations on sliders were a favorite food item (top center) at the Lehman-Fenity wedding. The couple chose Catering by Kimberly (thats Kimberly right center) because she had a great variety and it wasnt too ritzy or too the opposite, it was a nice mix, says Dave. Their favors were jars of blackberry jam (at left) because, says Heather, we used to make blackberry jam with my dad every summer. A highlight of the day was taking photos down on the beach at the end of Graces Cove road. We had the entire place to ourselves, says Dave. They returned later for a bonfire with all their guests.

Marias niece, whos just getting into the business, made the cake. I almost didnt let her, says Maria. I kept asking her, Are you sure you can do this? I owe her a big apology, she did a wonderful job! Maria says she really loves the pictures of her in her wedding dress in the surf. She says she didnt set out to get in on the trash-the-dress trend. She just meant to get some nice shots of herself in the water. So, after most of the guests left on the last ferry, she and Barry and the photographer headed over to Ballards beach. Because there was a storm coming in, I guess the waves were kind of rough. I lost my balance and kind of fell in and then another wave came and it just knocked me on my bum. I was laughing so hard. I had sand everywhere; its still coming off!
The Manisses 9.10.2011 She: 43, manicurist, born in Portugal. He: 45, health care worker, from New Jersey. Now live in East Providence, Rhode Island. How did you meet? Back in 88 at Roger Williams Park in Providence. I was riding around with my friend and he was on the side of the road with his friends. He said I just want one date and gave me his number. How did he/she propose? On the beach in New Hampshire. I got down on one knee and said, I will love you as long as the ocean is here. She started crying and said yes. How did Block Island become your wedding destination? That was all Marias doing. Maria: After 23 years together, I wanted small and intimate, but a journey. I was looking through
magazines and saw the cliffs and sand. It was so perfectly New England. Why did you choose The Manisses? Their gardens. And the farm, the animals, in back. How many guests did you have? 65. Everyones favorite food item? The candy station. The adults went crazy, they ran to it; there wasnt one piece left! Barry: I was opting for a 22-foot-tall mechanical T-rex but Maria wanted the candy. What do you think was the most unique thing about your wedding? We had a caricaturist there. Other highlights? Ray Torrey was wonderful. I got his name from the Block Island Wedding Show. I couldnt have found a better officiant.
What was your most bridezilla moment? Oh, there were so many! I had personalized water bottle labels and I had a friend come over to help me rip off the original labels; I yelled at her when I noticed she wasnt lining them up right. And then my invites were messages in bottles and our daughter and her friends helped me burn the invitation scrolls. I was putting them in Bad, Good or Great piles and I kept yelling at them, Thats a bad burn! Your most clueless groom moment? It was the first time Ive ever put on a tux. It was like getting into tactical gear for a SWAT team. Would you have changed anything? I only wish the ferry left much later so everyone could have stayed longer.

1661 Inn 8.13.2011 She: 38, high school teacher in West Springfield, Massachusetts. He: 37, works for Bose and is a student in web design in Connecticut. Now live in Granby, Connecticut. How did you meet? On Match.com. How did he/she propose? I wanted to take her on a hike but Kara really wanted to go for a bike ride that day, so I ended up just proposing in the kitchen. Kara: I was training for a triathlon. How did Block Island become your wedding destination? Tom: I loved the idea of people gathering there for the weekend, getting to know one another. Kara: We wanted a true New England experience, where people traveling from all across the country would get a real sense of place. Why did you choose the 1661? Tom vacationed on the island as a kid, but I had never been. So I packed up the car one day and went out by myself; I had a great day talking to islanders and stuff. The 1661 was the only place I looked at. Its charming, quaint, nothing fancy. As soon as I saw it I wanted it. I just popped in there and [owner] Rita was just so nice, so relaxed, so friendly. She was introducing me to the staff and, you know, the wedding industry is not usually like that. How many guests did you have? 85
How did Block Island make your wedding special? Think what your dream wedding would be and that was it. Most of our friends stayed two or three days and that was fun, everyone got to spend time together. Tom: The staff [at the 1661] was just great. Anything we needed they made happen. And the food was excellent. We had a barbecue for 80 guests for the night before and they made it work on such short notice. Wed plannned it the whole time and forgot to tell them! They made kid meals and gluten free meals for us. And they let us take over the lobby making gift bags. They were just so accommodating. Kara: Elizabeth [the hotels operations manager] knows what shes doing, how to plan the flow of things. We didnt even know exactly where we were having the ceremony until that day and she told us, Just let us know that morning; well put the chairs where we need to. She was so calm about it. It was relaxing. Shed say, Its your weekend, your day. Well take care of it. All the vendors we dealt with on the island were like that. Tom: And the food was excellent! Everyones favorite food item? The sea bass with lobster sorrel sauce. It was just amazing. What did guests tell you about the wedding afterward? Kara: My family is all from New England. Weve been to the Cape and the Vineyard but not here. They all thought this was really special. They cant wait to go back. What is your most beautiful memory of your wedding day? Tom: Kara came walking down the aisle and I was blown away. It was what I expected but more just amazing. Kara: The sun was setting and everyone was dancing and having a good time on the patio and I remember looking around and thinking, Wow,
how were we lucky enough to have this wedding right here? Do you have advice for others who wed here? Definitely use the local vendors. The people we used on the island knew the island and we got a really good feel of the island from working with them. Will your bridesmaids wear their dresses again? I really think that they will. I know everyone says that! Other highlights? Our D.J., Mark Scortino, was amazing. Tom says the best thing he did was to not play any of our choices! He just went with it, with the tone, and he had people of all ages boogying all night long. Coincidentally, he was my high school class president. I had heard he was out here and sure enough... Tom: Jamie from La Bella Rose did an awesome job with flowers, she had a lot of bright yellow sunflowers that looked really beautiful against the blue sky that day. What was your most bridezilla moment? Overpacking up the car. Once we were on the island I was in vacation mode, actually as soon as we got to the ferry! I couldnt even remember the things I thought I was supposed to worry about. His most clueless groom moment? Making fun of my purse: You bought a purse just for lipstick? What are you going do with it, carry it down the aisle? People are still talking about... the location being right on the water watching the moon come up on one side and the sun set on the other. It was a magical night.

duPont Farmhouse on Beacon Hill and Yellow Kittens 6.25.2011 She: 27, realtor at Lila Delman, from Jamestown, Rhode Island. He: 31, runs A. Transue Corporation, from Block Island. Now live in Block Island. How did you meet? At Yellow Kittens a couple summers ago when Bain was working as a bouncer. We knew who each other were because we were neighbors on Beacon Hill. But we didnt know each other. How did he/she propose? We were sitting on the beach just north of State. Kay got up all excited and stepped backward into dog poop. I guess the dog was so excited he pooped. Kaylan: Now we say we got all the crap out of the way at the beginning. Bain: I was more praying than asking, but she said yes. How did Block Island become your wedding destination? There was no other option. How did you choose the duPont House and Yellow Kittens? Kaylan: Both places are really special. I grew up at the duPont house, spent my childhood with some of those kids. And Kittens is where we met. How many guests did you have? Everyone tells you that 30 percent of the people you invite to your wedding will say no. We invited 165 and had 180 show up! How did Block Island make your wedding special? Bain: Because Block Island is so special to us. Its our home and we got to have our wedding at home. All the volunteers, too. I was an employee at Kittens, so they really took care of us.
Kaylan: Samantha and Hillary duPont and the Kelseys [McRae and McElroy] teamed up to decorate with twinkle lights and Chinese lanterns and vases. It was great, totally transformed. So many people wanted to help us out. Mary Anderson and Reta [Lehman] from The Glass Onion did all the flowers as a wedding present. Howie drove the bus and Adrian Pearce was the bus monitor. Bain: Kays friend Keith did a rehearsal dinner. We rented a grill and he stood behind it for eight hours. Kaylan: He and my brother did all the prep and all the cooking in our little kitchen on High Street. Everyones favorite food item? Probably the lobster rollups. Mexican on the Deck [at Yellow Kittens] did the food for us and we had different wraps and a make-your-own taco bar. What do you think was the most unique thing about your wedding? So many things. It wasnt like any other wedding. We had it outside on a sunny day if it had rained I guess we would have just gotten married in the rain. We had two officiants. Barbara MacDougall for the spiritual component. And Sean Corby, a very good friend who had gotten ordained online for another friends wedding a year before, offered to do ours. So we compromised and had both. Oh, and the dog walked my mom down the aisle. What did guests tell you about the wedding afterward? They kept talking about how it was a cloudy day and the sun came out just as we walked down the aisle. Vaux [Finnimore] played God Bless the Broken Road and Somewhere over the Rainbow for us. Do you have advice for others who wed here? Make sure your wedding is for you, not everyone else. Throw a wedding youd want to go to. Kay is from a really religious family so she originally thought wed have it in church. But were not religious and we wanted to be realistic to our life, to who we are. Kaylan: We just wanted it to be like a big party.
Will your bridesmaids wear their dresses again? One of them wore hers in the water that night, so I guess they double as wetsuits! Other highlights? Lesley from Photo Dog. We wanted an island photographer. She was the best, we couldnt have been happier! And the band! Never in Vegas played. Dan Cahill let us choose who would play at Kittens that weekend and theyre my favorite of everyone that comes to Kittens. They said theyd never done a wedding before. There was no formality at all. Everyone changed into shorts and Tshirts and had a really good time. The band and the music were just phenomenal. They sang Marry Me by Train and I still cry when I hear that song. They learned Isnt She Lovely for the father-daughter dance. People are still talking about... the vows. We were being really silly in the middle of it. Did anything unexpected happen? We forgot the rings in the bunkhouse and Anna [Pearce] left the [bridesmaid line], ran through the background to get the rings and handed them off in time. Nothing about the wedding would have gone so well if Anna Pearce werent the super organizer that she is. Would you have changed anything? Kay: I would have kept better track of the dog. We lost him. I went home after the reception to check on him and he wasnt there. I drove around the island for an hour and a half looking for him before I remembered saying something vague a week earlier to my friend Katie about watching him. Sure enough, Katie and Dave had come and gotten him, but they hadnt left a note! They said the bald groomsman told them not to leave a note. The only problem is, there were three bald groomsmen!

To Kay and Bain, it seemed like everyone on the island pitched in to make their wedding special, from baking cakes (Alicia Martin) to playing walk-downthe-aisle music (Vaux Finnimore) to transforming the Yellow Kittens bar into a reception hall fit for island royalty. Bain decided to wear his American Legion uniform in part because he and other members of the Legion had just formed the Danny Hart Memorial Honor Guard in memory of a dear friend. He says he no longer has his Army paratrooper uniform, so that wasnt an option!
