Professors offer tips on how to get the best reference letter

aaron Zaltzman neWs editor As the new semester rolls around, students who find themselves applying to post-graduate programs or internships might soon need a reference letter or two from their professors. While students may be tempted to request a reference from whomever gave them their highest grade, the best choice may be the professor they get along with best. In a reference letter one can talk about specific things. I think often a students transcript speaks for itself, and at a certain point I dont have to talk about their grades, Mike Atkinson, a psychology professor at Western, explained. If theres more personal stuff to talk about, I will, but if grades are all I have, thats all I can talk about. Typically, if all I can say about you is your grade, thats probably not a letter you want sent. Atkinson explained most potential employers or graduate schools arent looking for a reference about the applicants grades, but rather who they are as a person. That means students should be getting letters from those professors they have a relationship with. This can be difficult to accomplish in large classes such as Atkinsons introductory psychology class, which has over 500 students in each lecture. Atkinson said this requires students to be more active in building a relationship with their professor. Students can come ask questions, not just in class but before and after as wellin other words, they can engage intellectually, Atkinson explained. It may not occur during class, but students can build a relationship with their professors by engaging outside the lectures. Nigmendra Narain, who teaches an introductory political science

Students return to improved cellphone reception

alex Carmona neWs editor Anyone walking through the University Community Centre is used to seeing flocks of students angrily swiping at their phones, frustrated with the buildings horrible cellphone reception. But take another look. Since returning from the winter holidays, the number of students desperately waving their phones around in search of a signal appear to have been reduced dramaticallyat least among Rogers subscribers. Cellphone reception has been a major issue for a number of years. Andrew Forgione, president of the University Students Council, made improving campus cellphone reception one of his campaign promises during the USC presidential election campaign last year. He explained this latest push for better reception on campus has been in the works for months, and was not immediately successful. I started [working on this] over the summer, as it was in my platform to lobby for cellphone boosters. Western started with implementing the boosters all over campus, with their first target being the UCC, he said.

if there is a student who i cannot support, i dont think its fair to write a letter on their behalf. if it wouldnt be a good letter, i would suggest they go somewhere else.

andrew Forgione,

Once that didnt work they moved on to contacting larger cellphone companies to do a full assessment. According to Forgione, new towers and boosters were likely installed near campus by at least some of the major cellphone companies over the break, which is why there has been such a jump in quality. A few months ago I was told that cellphone companies were coming in to do signal testing, and expressed interest in building a few towers to boost the signal since the main issue was that the servers

were over capacity, he said. Forgione deduced students have taken notice simply by the reduction in the reception-related complaints he used to receive on a regular basis. Ive stopped receiving negative feedback from students regarding cellphone reception in the UCC, and its turned quite positive. Now I even see more students tweeting while theyre in class in the UCC, so Im not sure if it was such a good investment, he quipped. Reception, for most, can now even be found in the UCC and Natural Science basements. This morning I noticed I had almost full bars in the Nat Sci basement! Renee Tamming, a third-year science student and Rogers subscriber, exclaimed over Facebook. This problem, while reduced, does not seem to have gone away entirely. The change seems to have mostly affected Rogers and Fido subscribers, with Bell users still left barless. I havent noticed a major improvement, I didnt even notice they had changed anything, Diana Nikolaou, a third-year social science student and Bell subscriber, lamented.

course, elaborated on the difficulties facing both professors and students in those classes. Its difficult to write a reference letter for a student you dont know as well because you cant claim certain things, Narain said. Given that in first-year [courses] the teaching assistants mark the essays and run the tutorials, its not the same as if the student is in my third-year class and I can personally assess them. Narian also noted he would not feel comfortable writing a letter for students he didnt feel as confident in. If there is a student who I cannot support, I dont think its fair to write a letter on their behalf. If it wouldnt be a good letter, I would suggest they go somewhere else. Atkinson highlighted some things to consider when asking a professor for a letter. In essence all you have to do is come up to any professor and ask. A lot of students dont do that, Atkinson said. If somebody is looking for a reference letter, its really important to actually ask in person.

According to recent data, less than half of Ontario healthcare providers have the influenza vaccination, and Londons vaccination rates are among the lowest. In 2011, only 36 per cent of London healthcare workers received the flu shot, compared to 42 per cent of their Ontario peers. Flu shot rates have been decreasing across the province over the last few years. The lower rates of vaccination among health-care workers are increasingly putting patients at risk of contracting the flu. Individuals with the influenza virus are contagious for 24 hours before they begin to show symptoms.

London healthcare workers are not normally required to get the flu vaccination, except in certain circumstances. When there is an outbreak, people who are un-immunized are excluded from work, Cathy Stark, London Health Sciences Centres occupation health and safety service manager, said. We have done a pretty extensive campaign this year. Stark added the centre has endeavoured to educate people about vaccination before and during the flu season. As of now, 47.7 per cent of LHSC workers have been vaccinated, according to Stark. Taylor Rodrigues

Booze prices rising

Consumers of the cheapest spirits and beer will need to dig out a few extra nickels and dimes. Starting March 1, minimum liquor prices in Ontario will increase. The increase will only affect 1 per cent of all liquor products sold in Ontario, including 10 per cent of spirits and three to four per cent of beers. The cheapest spirit will now cost 50 cents more, up to a minimum price of $23.90 at 750 ml. The cheapest 24 pack of beer will also rise to $29.35, up from $28.80.

Selling prices for wine will not change, as the Liquor Control Board of Ontario does not sell any wines at the minimum price. However, the minimum price for a 750 ml bottle of wine will rise five cents to $5.90. The LCBO maintains minimum prices as a procedure of social responsibility to limit excessive consumption. Despite this, many see the increase as a cash grab, including Andrea Horwath, the Ontario NDP leader. Chris Layton, media relations coordinator at the LCBO, said the average consumer will see very little change on March 1. The reality is most of the products sold in Ontario are above the minimum price anyway, he said. The minimum prices are directly indexed to the rate of inflation, he continued. Ontario still has on average the lowest liquor prices in Canada. Richard Raycraft

Market Lane is to be renovated as part of London City Councils initiative to encourage growth downtown. For those who have never ventured past Richmond Row in Londons downtown core, Market Lane is a pedestrian walkway that links Covent Garden Market to Dundas Street. In an online survey conducted by the City of London in 2011, more than 400 people offered their opinion on how Market Lane could be improved. The survey showed pedestrians like areas to be welcoming. When theyre walking, they like safe, well-lit areas, they like attractive things to look at, they would like improvements to shopping, Andrew Macpherson, manager of parks, planning and design, said. It could certainly use enhancement and we should do more than just the basic upgrades. Council held a contest for designs in 2011, and by October, had narrowed the competition to five finalists from a total of 18 qualifying submissions. The winning design was announced on Monday to be awarded to Hapa Collaborative, a Vancouver-based consulting team. According to Macpherson, the project has a budget of $650,000, of which $75,000 goes to the design team. Construction is set for completion in November. Cecelia Xu

Liberals call for high-speed rail at party convention

line would traverse Windsor-Quebec City corridor at 300 km/h
Julian Uzielli neWs editor The Liberal Party of Canada has added its voice to the growing movement to bring high-speed rail to Southwestern Ontario. At their convention in Ottawa last weekend, the Liberals passed a policy resolution calling for the development of a high-speed rail line between Windsor and Quebec City, receiving support from 94 per cent of delegates. Policy resolutions do not necessarily translate into future platform points, Doug Ferguson, former Liberal Party president, explained. [The platform] is up to the policy and platform committee and our leader, whoever that is in the next election, he said. However, Im hoping that it will play a prominent role. I think this shows how enthusiastic the party is about it. Ferguson, who helped draft the policy resolution on behalf of the London West Liberal Association, explained high-speed rail is necessary for both London and Canada to remain competitive in an increasingly connected world. Canada is the only country in the G8 that doesnt have highspeed rail built or in the planning stages. China is in the midst of building 12,000 km of high-speed rail, Ferguson said. It will reduce carbon emissions, the construction will create tens of thousands of jobs, the manufacturing of the locomotives and cars will create jobs, and it will also make things more convenient. I think people from Toronto, for example, would like to move to London if we had high-speed rail. You could be in Toronto in less than an hour and work on the train on the way in. Bob Nichols, a spokesperson for the Ontario Ministry of Transportation, explained the ministry had completed a joint study with the governments of Quebec and Canada that suggested high-speed rail would be feasible. The study determined highspeed rail is feasible by providing an analysis on feasibility, technology, costs and ridership using representative routes and stations developed for modeling purposes, he said. [High-speed rail] could potentially connect 16 million people from Windsor to Quebec City. The governments are currently evaluating the study to identify the appropriate next steps. But despite the Liberals claims that high-speed rail would be a boon for the economy, Transport Canada says the costat an estimated $30 billionis just too high. In these fiscal circumstances, a new project of this scope is not a priority for our government, Maryse Durette, a spokesperson for Transport Canada, explained. She continued to say the government was investing in the Windsor-Quebec corridor through a $923 million capital program for VIA Rail instead. Without support from the federal government, a cross-provincial high-speed rail line is not likely to move forward, Ferguson said. Because this goes between provinces, I think its got to be the federal government that takes the lead. If we were just within one province, thats different, but I think its too big to have just one level of government work on it. The resolution came during a productive weekend for the Liberals. The party also passed a resolution calling for the legalization and regulation of marijuana, rejected a motion to sever ties with the monarchy and elected a new party president, Mike Crawley, a Western alumnus.

western Phd students creating smartphone app

Cheryl Stone neWs Features editor Want to know the ins and outs of Western? There will soon be an app for that. A group of PhD students at Western is working on the first steps of a smartphone application which will allow users access to the timetables of rooms on campus, and get information on campus buildings. Western has a huge campus which makes it easy to get lost, Camelia Nunez, a student working on the project, said. This app will help everyone find their way around and make it to their next class or meeting just on time. The group has created a 3-D model of campus for Google Earth to allow students to take photos of buildings and receive information about them. The app will also feature the ability to use QR codes for classrooms and find the schedule for the room. If all goes according to plan, it is our hope to have this application ready for the beginning of the 2012-13 academic school year, Nunez explained. Terry Rice, director of marketing and creative services at Western, said applications were no longer an optional investment for institutions. Its no longer just a nice to have, its expected. Western created the iWestern app using Information Technology Services, and also enlisted the help of several computer science students. The app, for all types of smartphones, features campus news feeds, the Western directory and access to Western libraries. Were looking at it and trying to update it on a regular basis, Rice explained. He noted there was a wish list of features for the next version of the app. Vincent Manzerolle, a lecturer in the faculty of information and media studies, predicted user-created applications would become more common. He explained there were many packages and programs which would allow users with basic coding knowledge to create their own apps. He also noted apps specialized to a specific area or population would become common as well. It really encourages people to do that. We want to make life easier for people visiting Western, be it students during orientation week and first weeks of classes. Anyone, including myself, that is not very familiar with the campus I think would find this app very helpful, Nunez said. Nunez explained projects like the app were common in the CulturePlex Lab where it was created. The CulturePlex Lab is a multidisciplinary environment and as it often happens, someone comes up with an idea and then others jump in and contribute their thoughts, she noted. This particular project is a good example of what can come out when people from different disciplines think towards a common goal.

Opinions
As we move on from our undergraduate education, we might think that as long as our marks are acceptably high and our mandatory courses are complete, we are going to be set for our next step, whether that be grad school or a career. However, one thing many students might not realize is that many grad schools and professional schools require reference letters. These short reports on your character become valuable as soon as you realize youd like to move beyond your bachelors degree, and can be difficult, or at least nerve-wracking, to obtain. Its hard to ascertain what sort of relationship one should have with their professors before making that first move to ask for a reference letter. In a class of 500 people, it may not even be possible to get the professor to remember your name, let alone know enough about you and your work ethic to make that important recommendation. That being said, the threshold does change with class size. In a 20-person class, if you havent had any sort of continuing conversation with the professor, or havent at least shown a keen interest in the course, its probably not appropriate to approach them for a letter. That being said, a solid mark and a few key questions over the course of a semester may be enough to stick in the mind of that professor who teaches hundreds of other kids at the same time. Once youve decided to take that next step, whats the best way to go about asking for a letter? Again, this might depend on the professor. A busy, techsavvy professor may appreciate an email, allowing them to respond however they see fit without that sudden awkward encounter. On the other hand, its important to not come off as lazy or uncaring. Many professors probably appreciate you coming to their office to speak with them, because if they know you well enough to vouch for you, then you should probably know them well enough to talk to them in person. In the end, there is more to life than grades. Its important students realize this, and base their education accordingly. A mid-80s average is impressive, but if you have no one there to speak to your character, its going to be difficult to prove to people that you know what youre doing. The Gazette Editorial Board

Blackout brings light to issue

wrath of mcGrath
gaining a lot of attention lately due to some controversial provisions in the bill that would essentially give the US government the right to immediately shut down any website that is suspected of pirating material, or compel search engines to remove any links to sites suspected of copyright infringement. Basically, its an issue of censorship. Now Im no expert, and Ill admit that I wasnt very aware of SOPA, other than knowing its that thing they talk about a lot on Reddit.comconsequently another website that is blacking out in protest. I actually only found out about the blackout through a tweet from one of my colleagues here at the Gazette who was lamenting about the fact that hed have to finish all his assignments early because Wikipedia was going down. So I immediately went to Google again, another site that would be affected by these billsand browsed for the latest news on the blackout to become better educated about what these bills were proposing. Its interesting that in the last few sentences Ive revealed to all of you how much my life revolves around the Internet, and therefore the very thought of some of these websites being shut down due to a law passed in the United States makes me want to cry like a girl who just got dumped via text message (again, didnt actually happen). But to return to my original statement, you dont really appreciate how much you rely on something until its gone, which is exactly why these large websites are using this tactic to demonstrate how much we rely on these technologies. And this strategy is completely effective. The blackout is an extreme reaction to an extremely irrational law, but perhaps it takes this type of action to get peoples attention. For example, before today I had heard grumblings on the Internet about the proposed laws, but it wasnt until I heard my precious Wikipedia would be taken away that I actually took the time to care, read about the issue and become informed. And Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales probably hopes many people have this reaction, which is why hes urged US citizens to contact their local members of Congress to oppose the bill. Ive immediately become passionate about a cause that I had almost no knowledge about two days ago, and Id be willing to bet that after Black WednesdayI dont know if thats a thing yet, I just decided to call it that many other people who were in the dark about SOPA and PIPA before might immediately become filled with hatred about the restrictions they would introduce. Would the bills pass if these blackouts werent occurring? Probably not, especially considering the Obama administration has already suggested they would oppose any anti-piracy laws that would encourage censorship. But these blackouts bring the issue to the forefront of peoples minds, merely imitating the concept that our free speech could be censored, and youve immediately got almost the entire Internet community on your side.

Kaitlyn mcGrath oPinions editor Sometimes you dont know what youve got till its gone. The famous words once sung by Joni Mitchell seem oddly pertinent to my life right now. And no, its not because Ive gone through some devastating breakup, because I havent. Still singlevery, very single. But lets not go down that road, and instead let me steer this column back on course. What Im actually referring to is the recent announcement that Wikipedia, the online encyclopedia and every students study tool, is shutting down for 24 hours. Today, Wikipedia is no moreat least until tonight at midnight. Meaning, today there will be lots of confused and desperate students wondering what the heck their textbook is talking about, and having no access to a simplified translation. The reason for the English-language version of Wikipedia blackout is to protest the proposed Stop Online Piracy Act and Protect Intellectual Property Act, better known as PIPA and SOPA, which are currently under consideration in Congress. The bills, which are meant to prevent online piracy and protect the unauthorized sale of US products and intellectual property overseas, have been

dental plan will keep students smiling

Re: Health plan referendum announced (Jan. 11, 2012) To the Editor: I am very pleased that the University Students Council will be holding a referendum in February regarding the purposed increase to the cost of the student health plan to accommodate dental coverage. Im glad that the USC is responding to the wishes of the student body, and taking steps to ensure that the student health plan offered to Western students is at par with other universities. Having access to dental care is essential for ones oral health, and is important for overall good health. I strongly feel that many students stand to benefit from the addition of dental coverage to the current student health plan. I am especially considering students, like myself, who find themselves without dental coverage under a parents health insurance due to loss of or transition in employment. Mature stu-

dents who are returning to school also deserve consideration. I appreciate that many students at Western may not find themselves in a position where they would benefit from the addition of dental coverage to the student health plan; however, I urge these students to consider fellow students who may benefit from such additions during the referendum on February 14 and 15. For Western alumni Drew Skitt, the answer was simpleassemble a creative team and produce a hit television show. While completing his four year media, information and technoculture degree, Skitt brainstormed ideas for a youth-oriented program. I was constantly rambling to friends about a music show, like Speakers Corner. People could come into a booth to select a beat or make their own and the show would be a collage of what the booth could attract, he explains. Unfortunately Skitt, like other entrepreneurs, faced the difficulty of bringing his idea to life. Deciding to carve my own pathand fund itwas where I was really taken aback, he reveals. When Perfect Isnt Good Enough Martin M. Antony and Richard P . Swinson New Harbinger You probably know a perfectionist or two. Theyre the friends who stay up until the wee hours of the morning putting the final touches on their essay. Theyre the roommates who spend way too long getting ready for a night out because their hair needs to be flawless. Having perfectionist traits can be healthy in moderation, but when it begins controlling your life, something may need to be done. In Martin M. Antony and Richard P Swinsons book When Perfect . Isnt Good Enough: Second Edition, the authors go into detail describing not only what perfectionism is and whom it affects, but also how to decide when it has become an unmanageable trait. For lovers of self-help books and those who like reading non-fiction to learn something new, When Perfect Isnt Good Enough is a fantastic, detailed read. Broken up into four in-depth sections, Antony and Swinson touch on every part of how perfectionism can affect your life and how you can deal with it. Part one focuses solely on understanding what perfectionism is, part two gives strategies on how to overcome the pressure and part four gives prevention strategies and further reading options. Although at first it may seem like these sections are too generalized to help readers cope with their own personal needs, part three goes into further detail about specific problems as a cause of perfectionism. Working through issues like depression, social anxiety, worry, dieting and body image, When Perfect Isnt Good Enough brings connections into play and helps readers understand why these issues may be linked to the pressure of being perfect. Although there is a stigma attached to self-help books and books about personal growth, When Perfect Isnt Good Enough is loaded with credible information as well as several activities, making it a workbook style format. Mixing knowledge with mini-projects for readers to work on keeps the book entertaining, all while providing necessary information. For those students who think they may have perfectionist traits but arent certain whether they want to speak to someone about it, this is a fantastic place to start. Jesica Hurst

Contemporary art gives interactive experience

Forest City Gallery

abby Chow Contributor The days of laser-protected paintings and security cameras are overwelcome to the world of contemporary installation art. Playing with the juxtaposition of light and space, Andrea Carvalho decorates the Forest City Gallery with unique creations characterized by an unconventional combination of materials. Interactive, each in their own respectwhether it be standing under an elevated translucent canvas or walking along the path of fluorescent lightsthis Montreal

artist has created works of art provoking continual curiosity and the communication of fresh perspectives in a familiar environment. Carvalho brings together wood, plastic, metal and other materials to display critiques on society through her work in Ontario, Quebec and Newfoundland. Canopy, the leading piece of the exhibit, features a stretch of flock over a handcrafted wooden canvas. Almost as an imitation of the sun, a single red light simmers through the translucent fabric. Perhaps the piece is a rendition of the shelter found so commonly in our community, stripped to its bare,

minimalistic core. It possibly leads to the interpretation that its purpose is to critique societys growing dependence on materialism. An extension may also entail that the balance of this lifestyle is on a thin and breakable composition, much like that of the flock. Equally notable in conceptual stimulation is the piece An Open Road Where I Can Breathe. A clear plastic cover attached to a flexible plexi rod covers fluorescent lights, while the duplicate of the arrangement of lights is placed outside the plastic container. After encouragement from the receptionist to freely adjust each piece, it was discov-

ered that the plastic cover could be taken off and placed aside. Noting that Carvalho designs each installation with the notion of belonging, the concept of restraint in choosing ones path comes to mind. The above is simply one interpretation of pieces shown in Carvalhos exhibit. The essence of contemporary art is in the interaction with its viewers. Made to Measure: Andrea Carvalho is running until Feb. 10 at the Forest City Gallery, located at 258 Richmond St. Admission is free. Visit forestcitygallery.com for more information.

While Project Runway All Stars and Next Top Model are busy working the runway, the CWs new show Remodeled takes a look at the modeling industrys inconsistency. Paul Fisher, modeling industry veteran, is bringing together hundreds of small-time agencies in a project called the network. For a business thats all about networking, Fisher attempts to put the power back in the models hands, and the responsibility back on the agents who represent them.

on Charts Faith Hill Come Home showcasing her vocal ability, Come home is an impressive debut single from hills forthcoming album. nailing the vocals as always, hill sings about love and making it through trials. reminiscent of an anthem, the song isnt overly country and will likely appeal to country fans and critics alike. though its been a while since hill has released a single, Come home is her way of reminding everyone why theyve been missing her.

in case you dont have enough brad Pitt films in your dVd library, you can bulk up your stock with this weeks release of Moneyball. Forced to build a team on a budget, billy beane (Pitt) capitalizes on baseballs statistic love-affair, challenging regular recruitment convention by filling his oakland athletics roster with unconventional, statistically selected athletes. despite the opposition of the media, the fans and even their field manager, they forever change the way the game is played.

Explore a dangerous method Gazette tested: pasta poser

simple spaghetti squash with cheese
does cereal for breakfast, a sandwich for lunch and a granola bar for your afternoon snack leave you feeling like youve gotten your daily dose of grains? replace the pasta in your pasta dinner with this ridiculously easy recipe for spaghetti squash, a mild-tasting squash with flesh that shreds into noodle-like strands when cooked. Ingredients 1 medium spaghetti squash, washed 3 tablespoons butter 1/2 cup parmesan cheese salt and pepper, to taste directions 1. halve and seed squash. 2. Place cut side down on a microwaveable dish. 3. microwave on high for 10 to 15 minutes, or until easily pierced with a fork. When choosing your squash, look for a light coloured gourd free of bruises and make sure to wash it before cooking. though the squash tastes great in this simple recipe, dont be scared to swap it in for noodles with your favorite sauce. you can even add it to chili for a creative, delicious twist. 4. using a fork, scrape strands of squash away from the skin, transferring to a large bowl, discarding the empty skins. 5. add butter and toss until melted. 6. serve squash topped with divided parmesan cheese, salt and pepper. Director: David Cronenberg Starring: Viggo Mortensen, Keira Knightley, Michael Fassbender David Cronenberg is one of the greatest Canadian filmmakers. The brilliant architect of the venereal horror film, who terrified audiences with films such as The Fly, Dead Ringers and Videodrome, rejoins Viggo Mortenson for a third time in one of his most repressed films, A Dangerous Method. Cronenbergs films usually tackle violence and sexuality in a clinical manner, presented on screen with almost surgical precision. Surprisingly, A Dangerous Method, a film about Sigmund Freud and Carl Jung, does not go into nearly as much depth about psychoanalysis as some of his earlier work. Its almost as if Cronenberg is repressing himself, teasing the audience with a film about two of the greatest theoreticians on human sexuality and then desexualizing the film. In which case, this may be one of the most highbrow jokes

presented in cinema. The film follows a rather competitive relationship between Freud (Mortenson) and Jung (Michael Fassbender). With the first World War looming overhead, Jung and Freud debate the direction that psychoanalytic theory should move towardsJung wants to use it to cure people, Freud wants to use it to explain. The two psychologists relationship is started through Sabina Spielrein (Keira Knightley), a hysterical woman who Jung treats using Freuds talking cure. Jung and Spielrein develop a romantic relationship which threatens each characters identity. This is familiar territory for Cronenberg, when Sabina explains the idea of a destructive forcea clash that occurs in sex that destroys the egoshe is describing the twins of Dead Ringers. Her relationship with Jung is one where the roles of patient and doctor are redefined through their opposite natures. The performances are incredibly strongwith the exception of Fassbender. Knightley and Mortenson blend right into their roles so well you hardly notice they

are there. Unfortunately, Fassbender stands out like a sore phallus. Its hard to tell if its Fassbenders acting, Jungs character or Hamptons writing, but he is simply not as compelling. Jung melodramatically goes from being a restrained doctor to free hedonist, and dutiful husband to unapologetic adulterer within seconds, making him feel painfully inconsistent. The plot is incredibly uninteresting. It builds towards no real conclusionno dramatic conclusion, no definitive point and no real insight into Freud or Jungs theories. With a running time of only 94 minutes, it is fair to say that if the film were longer and more time was spent on the theories of Freud and Jung, it might feel like it had something to say about these two men. As it is, this film feels like it is more about Cronenberg than his characters. While the method may be flawed, the diagnosis remains the sameCronenberg is still a brilliant Canadian filmmaker and A Dangerous Method is still better than anything coming out of Hollywood.

Sports
david Czosniak Contributor When two teams sporting an identical 4-7 record collide, sparks are bound to fly. Wednesday night saw exactly that when the Western Mustangs womens basketball team took on the Guelph Gryphons in a heated contest at Alumni Hall. Both teams had come off consecutive losses, with the Mustangs losing two games to the Lakehead Thunderwolves last week while Guelph lost to both the Brock Badgers and the Windsor Lancers. Fortunately for the purple and white, the Gryphons didnt fare much better on Wednesday night. The game started out relatively close, with the Mustangs only up 33-30 at halftime. However, the stats told a different story. In the first half, the Gryphons only made 27.8 per cent of their shots, whereas the Mustangs shot 41.9 per cent. What kept the Gryphons close were the turnovers and the rebounds the Mustangs gave up. They had three fewer turnovers in the half, and got 13 extra chances to score a basket off of their offensive rebounds. Guelph coach Tom OBrien was happy with his teams offensive rebounding proficiency. Our two post players Samantha Russell and Jasmine Douglas are both very athletic [...] so I think that has something to do with it. Weve done pretty well on the offensive rebounds throughout the season, so its something we work on, he said. After halftime, however, it was almost a completely different game. The Mustangs started off the quarter on an 10-0 run, and

never looked back. They led by as much as 25 points at times by playing excellent defence, limiting the Gryphons to shooting 18.5 per cent, and by making more than three times as many shots as the Gryphons. [We tried] to box out. In the first half we were kind of getting killed on the [offensive] boards, and they were getting put backs, so the more we boxed out the more stops we got, Jenny Vaughan, Mustangs guard, said about the teams second half changes.

oH My God iM on fire!! The Mustangs looked to improve to 5-7 on the season with a win over the Gryphons on Wednesday. After leading by just three to end the first half, the Mustangs looked like a different team going into the third quarter. Led by an explosive Jenny Vaughan, the purple and white ended the game with a 76-54 victory.

Vaughan led the Mustangs through the second half of the game, scoring 19 of her 30 overall points in the second half, while adding six assists. Another big contributor to the game was Katelyn Leddy, who scored 19 points and collected 12 rebounds to give herself a double double in the contest.

Mustangs coach Brian Cheng has been impressed with Vaughan all season, and this game was no exception. Undoubtedly Jenny has been a tremendous leader for the group. She does so much off the court and she can just do so much on offence. She can score for herself, she can create her own shot, she can pen-

etrate. Shes a quintessential point guard, Cheng explained. The Mustangs look to continue their winning ways and bring some momentum into Saturdays game at Brock, and then to next weeks games when they host the Windsor Lancers and the Laurier Golden Hawks.
