Youth
Summit set
for March
17-18
The Youth Summit is scheduled
for March 17-18, 2012 at Lincoln
Lake Baptist Camp. The youth sum-
mit is being sponsored by the Mont-
calm Coalition to Prevent Underage
Drinking, (MCPUD) and is open to
all high school students in Montcalm
County who want to make a differ-
ence and be part of the solution of
underage drinking. We have already
done a mailing to area school per-
sonnel and church leaders. We are
hoping to have students representing
each school district including home
schoolers. We are asking area schools
and churches that they consider the
teens they are in contact with, who
they feel would beneft from this
summit, and encourage them to fll
out an application to attend.
The summit will include the ex-
ploration of three main ideas of
healthy living:
1. What choices we have,
2. How to stand by those choices,
3. How to connect with others
who have those same standards.
The summit will consist of brain-
storming sessions and activities to
reinforce the sessions. Participation
is limited to 50 students so encour-
age them to apply asap. The summit
is free. For more information you or
the student can contact either Lynn
Cooper at (989) 831.4591, LynnCoo-
per@CherryHealth.com or Pastor
Paul Spittka at 616.225.2105, Pastor-
Paul@gcclink.com. MCPUD is really
excited to be able to provide this op-
portunity for students, so please en-
courage them to apply.

Bruce Traverse chosen as
honorary associate of the
year at Carson City Hospital
Congratulations to Carson City Hospitals Honorary
Associate of the Year Bruce Traverse, FACHE, for-
mer president and CEO. Traverse retired from the hos-
pital he has been passionately devoted to for so many
years on Dec. 31, 2011. He was chosen to receive this
honor because of his more than 30 years of dedication
and commitment to the hospital and community. As-
sociates at the hospital feel Bruce has always worked
towards what is best for hospital employees, patients
and the community as a whole, and they have been
consistently inspired by Bruces commitment to excel-
lence.
Sheridan Community Hospital (SCH) is part-
nering with Michigan Rural Healthcare Preserva-
tion (MRHP) and renowned neurosurgeons Dr.
Tim Spencer,Dr. Gerald Schell, Dr. Naman Salibi,
and Dr. E. Malcolm Field to collaborate on a neu-
rosurgery program to ensure the hospital contin-
ues to thrive and that the local economies grow
with it. The neurosurgery program, led by Dr.
Spencer, and MRHP Medical Director, Dr. Field, is
built around minimally invasive spine procedures
that are appropriate even for outpatient clinical
facilities. It provides convenient access to care for
patients in an intimate hospital facility where pa-
tient care and safety come frst.
Sheridan Community Hospital is the only facil-
ity in west and central Michigan taking advantage
of recent advancements in techniques for spinal
surgery. For the frst time ever, SCH is presenting
spinal surgery and back-pain treatment in a new
light. Sheridan Hospital is a superb facility with
exceptionally gifted and caring staff. We are incred-
ibly pleased to provide such new and innovative,
minimally disruptive, minimally invasive, services
to the local community, said Dr. Spencer.
Applying the most advanced surgical approach-
es, and taking advantage of the leading endoscop-
ic, laser-assisted, and microscopic techniques, this
new surgical program emphasizes patient safety
and comfort while providing for the quickest re-
covery and return to normal activities. At the same
time, this medical approach preserves normal
bodily structures and ensures minimal blood loss
and minimal time under anesthesia. The advance-
ments in medical science and medical engineering
that facilitate this program are truly remarkable.
Eighty percent of people will suffer from back
pain at some point in their lives. For years, people
who have suffered debilitating back pain were
told there is nothing that can be done; they were
instructed to just live with it. This is no longer
true. The new neurosurgery program at SCH now
allows for many common back and spine issues to
be resolved quickly, effectively, and safely, at a lo-
cal community hospital. The medical engineering
built around this program ensures that the same
equipment used at the most advanced spine cen-
ters in the United States can now be found much
closer to home at Sheridan Hospital.

Bruce Traverse chosen as
honorary associate of the
year at Carson City Hospital
Congratulations to Carson City Hospitals Honorary
Associate of the Year Bruce Traverse, FACHE, for-
mer president and CEO. Traverse retired from the hos-
pital he has been passionately devoted to for so many
years on Dec. 31, 2011. He was chosen to receive this
honor because of his more than 30 years of dedication
and commitment to the hospital and community. As-
sociates at the hospital feel Bruce has always worked
towards what is best for hospital employees, patients
and the community as a whole, and they have been
consistently inspired by Bruces commitment to excel-
lence.
Sheridan Community Hospital (SCH) is part-
nering with Michigan Rural Healthcare Preserva-
tion (MRHP) and renowned neurosurgeons Dr.
Tim Spencer,Dr. Gerald Schell, Dr. Naman Salibi,
and Dr. E. Malcolm Field to collaborate on a neu-
rosurgery program to ensure the hospital contin-
ues to thrive and that the local economies grow
with it. The neurosurgery program, led by Dr.
Spencer, and MRHP Medical Director, Dr. Field, is
built around minimally invasive spine procedures
that are appropriate even for outpatient clinical
facilities. It provides convenient access to care for
patients in an intimate hospital facility where pa-
tient care and safety come frst.
Sheridan Community Hospital is the only facil-
ity in west and central Michigan taking advantage
of recent advancements in techniques for spinal
surgery. For the frst time ever, SCH is presenting
spinal surgery and back-pain treatment in a new
light. Sheridan Hospital is a superb facility with
exceptionally gifted and caring staff. We are incred-
ibly pleased to provide such new and innovative,
minimally disruptive, minimally invasive, services
to the local community, said Dr. Spencer.
Applying the most advanced surgical approach-
es, and taking advantage of the leading endoscop-
ic, laser-assisted, and microscopic techniques, this
new surgical program emphasizes patient safety
and comfort while providing for the quickest re-
covery and return to normal activities. At the same
time, this medical approach preserves normal
bodily structures and ensures minimal blood loss
and minimal time under anesthesia. The advance-
ments in medical science and medical engineering
that facilitate this program are truly remarkable.
Eighty percent of people will suffer from back
pain at some point in their lives. For years, people
who have suffered debilitating back pain were
told there is nothing that can be done; they were
instructed to just live with it. This is no longer
true. The new neurosurgery program at SCH now
allows for many common back and spine issues to
be resolved quickly, effectively, and safely, at a lo-
cal community hospital. The medical engineering
built around this program ensures that the same
equipment used at the most advanced spine cen-
ters in the United States can now be found much
closer to home at Sheridan Hospital.

A wonderful memory. Almost every week I am
reminded of my mother, who passed away several
years ago.
My mother came to Canada by ship at age 18, from
still-First-World-War-torn Finland. It was 1930, the
eve of the Great Depression here. Mother soon married
another immigrant, a Russian. Life in Canada turned
out to be hard. After the Depression, World War II took
its toll. It was not the time to be a Russian in North
America. But by the time I was born both of them
spoke, read and wrote English very well well, except
for a few words that my mother pronounced with a
markedly U.P.-ish accent. And my Mother had become
a citizen a model citizen.
An opinion based on facts. In high school, me just
home from ball practice, she would be sitting at the
kitchen table. Shed have read the newspaper and be
up-to-date on the home-town politics. She knew how
the mayor felt about every issue. She had read the city
Commission rulings to know how they would affect us.
She wanted action from her elected ofcials. I wonder
what that Commissioners going to do about extending
the east ditch on Korah Road? Mr. Tyynella thinks
we should vote Ben Outinen to the zoning commission,
but I hear he didnt support letting the Lutheran Church
expand its parking lot, so I dont like him. Theyre hard
workers. She wasnt particularly religious, but she
supported the good works of the good Lutheran folks.
She understood duty. Most of all, my mother knew it
was her duty to be and stay informed about all matters
of government, to exert her rights, and to support her
community by expressing herself to the elected. She
knew it was her privilege, and duty, to vote. Early on I
knew that if you didnt like what the Commissioner did,
you called him and gave your opinion. And sometimes
he would stop for coffee to talk about your opinion.
Almost always, he was happy you had one. And if
he didnt always do what you expected of him, you
exercised your vote against him in the next election.
Facts and rights mattered. When I grew up, most
peoples opinions were based on facts. Most knew their
rights and relished their freedoms - they made it their
business. Most understood their property rights when
they couldnt have even owned property in their birth
land. Most spoke calmly, reasonably, and listened in
conversations. They knew their local elected ofcials,
often on a rst name basis. Most voted. Almost all of
them were involved.
Why dont more people vote today? Its not so true
nowadays. People have loud opinions. But ask them
what facts they base their opinions on? Many cant
quote one true fact, though most will quote their
neighbors opinion as if it were the gospel. Where have
the informed people gone? Why dont people make
some effort?
She comes to my ofce. Almost every week or so my
mother comes into my ofce and restores my faith in
Americans. Shes 55 or 66 or 80. Shes here to discuss
the new farming laws. Or to do some revisions to her
estate plan now that shes newly widowed. Or for
help in contesting her property tax bill. Shes feisty,
opinionated, independent. She has reasons. She is
reasonable. She tells me why she votes for whomever
it is she supports. She asks me whom I support for
President and she wants to know why. She knows the
law that affects her. She explains why the neighbors
easement has intruded on her 50 feet of the west half
of her north forty, and she knows how to read her
own propertys legal description. She still reads the
newspaper cover to cover. Shes my mother all over
again. And what a joy for me.
I spend the time listening and wishing she would just
stay on for another cup of coffee, but she leaves after
our interview is done. I wait for our next meeting so
we can laugh together over some National politicians
gaff that tickled her, or about how her son-in-law still
cant wire a garage as well as she could if only her
knees were better. And Im pleased, pleased that my
mother was a perfect example of how to be a model
citizen, and pleased there are still people out there
acting as a good role model for their own children and
grandchildren, some of whom will grow up wanting to
vote, just like I did. I will vote in 2012, because it is my
privilege. Will you?

Winter Itch
About this time of year a lot of people are miserable, not with the winter blues, or cabin fever, but
with Winter Itch. This is a condition of dry, itchy skin, usually with some small red bumps, sometimes little
pustules. Usually this is found on the upper arms, mid and upper back, chest and upper abdomen, and
sometime on the legs.
Most of the time, it is related to a reduction of skin moisture and skin oil. It may also be aggravated by
over heating parts of the body by heavy clothing.
The solutions are fairly simple.
Run a humidier in your home, especially in sleeping areas. Humidity should be between 45 and 65.
There should be a little condensation on the bottoms of the window panes. Not too much; that might
ruin the window frames.
Drink adequate water (chlorine free). Most adults should have between 40-60 ounces per day. Coffee
and soda pop are not considered water. In fact, they are dehydrating and contribute to the problem.
Reduce the temperature of your bath or shower. Hot water removes some of the skin oils which are
needed to lubricate the skin. Also only soap and scrub the important areas of your body: hair, armpits,
bottom, and privates. Scrubbing the rest of the body removes much needed skin oils.
Add oil to your diet. For adults, two tablespoons of olive oil every day is helpful
(can be mixed in food) and Omega 3 (sh or axseed oil) 2000-4000 mg per day with
food in two or three doses are highly benecial for skin, hair, joints, and arteries.
Natural Vitamin E (d-alpha tocopherol) 400-800 units per day may be added with
benet to your skin and blood vessels. Be careful not to use synthetic Vitamin E (l or
dl-alpha tocopherol) as it may add to the inammation in your blood vessels.
Finally, in un-sunny Michigan, Vitamin D3 (2000 mg per day) is a good thing. It is not
necessarily needed to control the winter itch, but it is great for helping some other
winter health problems.

How can you keep
your kids off drugs?
You can start simply by talking to them.
Have a calm discussion with your
children about the dangers of drug use,
so they can feel comfortable
asking questions without fearing
anger or judgement. If you keep
an open dialogue with your children,
its more likely theyll come to you
for advice in the future.
TIP SHEET for helping kids
stay drug-free
Be a good role model.
Set clear rules for teens.
Safeguard your prescription medications.
Keep an open dialogue.
