PREPARATION FOR WORSHIP

When God saw what they did, how they turned from their evil way, God repented of the evil which he had said he would do to them; and he did not do it. - Jonah 3:10 Now after John was arrested, Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the gospel of God, and saying, "The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent, and believe in the gospel." And passing along by the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and Andrew the brother of Simon casting a net in the sea; for they were fishermen. And Jesus said to them, "Follow me and I will make you become fishers of men." And immediately they left their nets and followed him. And going on a little farther, he saw James the son of Zebedee and John his brother, who were in their boat mending the nets. And immediately he called them; and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired servants, and followed him. - Mark 1:14-20 Divine forgiveness is absolutely unconditional. We are not forgiven because we are not very bad. We are not forgiven because we are trying to be good. We are not forgiven because we are sorry for our sins. We are not forgiven because we have suffered; as the iniquity of Jerusalem was pardoned because she had received from the Lord's hand double for all her sins. In the Old Testament forgiveness is always conditioned upon the repentance and suffering of the sinner; in the New Testament repentance grows out of forgiveness. We are forgiven because we are sinners. Forgiveness is the form God's love takes when it rests upon sin. - Edward Judson (1844-1914), The Outlook, v. XCVII, Lyman Abbott, ed., Outlook Co., 1911, p. 748

CALL TO WORSHIP

(from Psalm 62)

Leader: For God alone my soul waits in silence, for my hope is from Him. People: He alone is my rock and my salvation, my fortress; I shall not be shaken. Leader: In God rests my deliverance and my honor; my mighty rock, my refuge is in God People: Trust in Him at all times, O people; pour out your heart before Him; God is a refuge for us. All: For the Lord is good; His steadfast love endures forever, and His faithfulness to all generations. Praise the LORD!

HYMN 144 (Red Hymnal) I Greet Thee, Who My Sure Redeemer Art

PRAYER OF CONFESSION Merciful God, You pardon all who truly repent and turn to You. We humbly confess our sins and ask Your mercy. We have not loved You with a pure heart, nor have we loved our neighbor as ourselves. We have not done justice, loved kindness, or walked humbly with You, our God. Have mercy on us, O God, and forgive us our sins, we pray. In Your great compassion, cleanse us from our sin. Create in us a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within us. Cast us not away from Your presence, and take not Your Holy Spirit from us. Restore to us the joy of Your salvation and sustain us with Your bountiful Spirit, that we may hereafter bear faithful, righteous, and joyful witness to the Christ who died that we might have new life, for it is in His name that we pray. Amen. ASSURANCE OF PARDON ALLELUIA Taiz

WE GIVE THANKS TO GOD

OFFERING ANTHEM King of Glory, King of Peace Howard Helvey

(b. 1968)

King of glory, King of peace, I will love Thee; And that love may never cease, I will move Thee. Thou hast granted my request, Thou hast heard me; Thou didst note my working breast, Thou hast spared me. Wherefore with my utmost art I will sing Thee, And the cream of all my heart I will bring Thee. Though my sins against me cried, Thou alone didst clear me; And alone, when they replied, Thou didst hear me. Seven whole days, not one in seven, I will praise Thee; In my heart, though not in Heaven, I can raise Thee. Small it is, in this poor sort To enroll Thee: Een eternitys too short To extol Thee.
- text by George Herbert (1593-1633)

DOXOLOGY 592 (Blue Hymnal) Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; Praise Him, all creatures here below; Praise Him above, ye heavenly host; Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen. PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING

The Apostles Creed

I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth

on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen. GLORIA PATRI 579 (Blue Hymnal) PASTORAL PRAYER AND THE LORDS PRAYER Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen. Greatorex

Csar Franck was one of the most influential figures in the history of French music; his works have had an enormous impact on an entire generation of French composers. Franck was a deeply religious person, and his works often reflect his religious beliefs. The organ was probably his favorite instrument and Franck wrote a large number of pieces for it. Todays prelude is the opening movement of a larger work, his Prlude, Fugue et Variation. Written between 1860 and 1862, it was dedicated to Camille Saint-Sans, himself an organist of considerable skill. The flowing B-minor Prlude has a gentle melody that has often been compared to a shepherd piping his horn. Howard Helvey (b. 1968) resides in Cincinnati, Ohio, where he is active as a composer, arranger and pianist, and serves as organist/choirmaster of historic Calvary Episcopal Church. Known particularly for his published and commissioned choral music, many of Mr. Helveys compositions have been featured on various recordings, national network and PBS television broadcasts, and in eminent concert venues. His anthem King of Glory, King of Peace is paired with a text by George Herbert, a 17th-centruty English poet and Anglican priest. Our Junior Choir joins us this morning, presenting This Is the Day by Mark Burrows. Full of syncopated rhythms and a recurring refrain on Psalm 118:24, this energetic anthem calls for frequent claps and stomps! French Romantic composer Camille Saint-Sans approached the organ very early in life. His works for organ can be divided into three groups: early (1852-1866), classical (18941898), and late (1917-1919). His Seven Improvisations for organ are among his final works. The Improvisations, in particular, look back to the improvisations Saint-Sans regularly included as part of his organist's duties, performances which, contemporary listeners maintained, were so perfectly proportioned and thoroughly worked out they often could not be distinguished from fully notated works.
