Location : India, Jammu Kashmir Popular Instruments of Music : Damman, Sitar, Damian, Tumbaknari and Santoor

The regions like Jammu, Kashmir, Ladakh all these have very different but great tradition in the musical instrument. The musical instrument which is prominent in Jammu Kashmir's Ladakh region is very different and it is known as Byang. But in the other regions of the state, this instrument is not an aspect of their vocal tradition. Jammu Kashmir state's important musical instruments are the:

Sitar :
This Kashmiri musical instrument is a bit big in size but long and to create the music, it has seven thin strings. These seven strings are fitted by the hook which is called as Mizrab and through this instrument,the musician creates a very pleasant music.

Skaling :
This Kashmiri musical instrument is like two flutes are joined to each other.

Damian :
This instrument is like a guitar, made of 6 thin strings. This instrument is very famous in the nomadic people who reside in the Kashmir's Tibetan area, but their origin is in Ladakh. The meaning of this instrument is like the meaning of Da is sound and the meaning of the Mian is sweet, means the sweet sound instrument.

Dahara :
This musical instrument is like a very long rod of iron, and in has it has iron and bronze rings,to support it, these rings are controlled by the musician's hand movement. With the accompanied of this instrument, the Kashmir state's bard Ladi Shah sings the songs of satirical.

Tumbaknari :
This musical instrument has the shape of another instrument Surahi, it is an earthern instrument and this is played on every occasion, in Kashmir. Nari instrument is the earthen pot . The Kashmiri instrument Tumbknari has most of the common features with the instrument Irani Tumakh, but not a similar body. Tumbaknari has offered a variety of dimensions in the folk music of Kashmir, largely in the performances of the Ruff music.

Saranda :
This Kashmiri instrument is also a stringed one, similar to the Indian traditional instrument Sarangi. Saranda instrument is also played using the bow. This instrument is mostly used by Jammu region's Jogis, means the religious saint.

Surna :
This instrument was belonging to India's ancient musical instrument Shehnai; Shehnai is a very traditional instrument, still now it is an important musical aspect.

King :

This is a most attractive instrument of folk music of Jammu. This instrument has a very long round bar which is made of wood and to create a reflective sound; there are 2 goblet, they are joint the King in a vertical shape. This Kashmiri musical instrument is used when the folk songs are singing by the artists and Karkan.

Noot :
This is a very common instrument, which is used to create very rhythmic music in the region of Kashmir valley.

Ransingha :
This instrument is made in the shape of alphabet S. this lengthy instrument is use din the region of Jammu with company of beautiful religious dances.

Saz-e-Kashmir :
The shape of the instrument is round and through the decorative aspect of the body if the SAZ-E-KASHMIR is made of wooden.This instrument is also played by using the bow. This instrument has 3 major strings, on another side of the instrument; which are in 2 sets of strings which are sympathetic.

Damman :
This instrument is made of 2 set of kettledrums; which are known as Mo and Fo, means the female and male. This instrument has a hole inside it, because which water can pour inside it and creates the deep and heavy sound. Damman is played by using the Damshing. This instrument creates a pleasant beat which is used for songs and dances in the region of Ladakh.

Other Instrument of Music :


In the state Jammu Kashmir, there are number of musical instruments like Dingjam, Daph, Sgra-Snyan, Diwang, Dukkar, Chmta, Talli, Kon Kon, Tooti, Hauns, Swarnari, Gharah, Algoza Bugjal in state Jammu.
