Eagle Fest was started as an educational effort to expand our knowledge of nature and our heritage. Each year the festival includes educational displays, exhibitions and lectures; Native American art and performances; gospel singing; live music; and nature tours. Texas Parks and Wildlife and the US Army Corps of Engineers are always a huge part of the event providing speakers, water safety exhibits, tour guides and nature exhibits. Why have the celebration in January ? It is simply the best time for viewing Bald Eagles in their natural habitats. While several pairs remain in the area year round and build nests, most migrate and the largest numbers are here during the colder months, January and February, with the lakes providing a good source of food.

Making their 12th appearance at Eagle Fest 2012 is Last Chance Forever from San Antonio. L. C. F. is a non-profit organization dedicated to the rehabilitation and release of injured and orphaned raptors, birds of prey such as hawks, owls, eagles, falcons, and vultures. Since its incorporation in 1978, Last Chance Forever has been responsible for treating thousands of birds of prey, including endangered species. Generally up to 80% of those cases received are released back to their natural home, the wild!

The 74th Legislature of the State of Texas passed a resolution declaring Rains County The Eagle Capital of Texas as an effort to protect and preserve tAmerican Bald Eagle. The resolution was adopted by the Senate on May 24, 1995 and by the House on May 29, 1995. It was signed by the Honorable George W. Bush, Governor of the Great State of Texas, on June 16, 1995, thus officially proclaiming Rains County as the Eagle Capital of Texas. The proclamation notes the importance of Lake Fork, Lake Tawakoni and surrounding areas as nesting and feeding grounds for the Bald Eagles as well as many other species of birds, both regional and migratory. Rains County has recorded 260 different species and varieties of wild birds.

By: Michael T. Josh Fuller Publisher Owner The Lone Star Shopper When I was about eight or nine years old my grandmother bought me something for Christmas or a birthday I never forgot. Rocket radios were made in the 1950s. They came complete with the antenna clip, earphone, instruction sheet and of course the rocket radio. They operated very well, you could clearly hear many local radio stations with great volume! They dont make them like this any more. No tubes, no batteries, no electricity needed to operate this very cool toy crystal radio! They get their power from the radio waves! Many nights, I laid awake in my top bunk listening to radio stations from all over the south and even Cuba. The most interesting thing about it was you clipped alligator clips to metal and they worked like a charm. Some nights I would listen to The World Tomorrow with Garner

Ted Armstrong. Other nights I would listen to Leon Kellner live from the Blue Room of The Rossevelt Hotel in New Orleans. Other nights I would get a schooling in Rhythm and Blues and Rock n Roll. I was pleased to find them still available on the web. Dont think Ill be buying one at one hundred fifty dollars. Im pullin for ya!
