Concerned citizens and community leaders are founding a new volunteer and advocacy group for the Ott Preserve.
Working to nurture a family-friendly landscape and enforce a code of conduct.
January 23, 2012 - Battle Creek, MI A group of residents, hikers, bikers, equestrians, conservationists, and environmentalists have decided to found a nonprofit to help shepherd the Ott Preserve, a 300+ acre rustic, hidden jewel and Calhoun County Property. This group is tentatively called the Ott Preservation Society [OPS]. They wish to announce: All persons interested in being members of the Ott Preservation Society are invited to its Founding Convention on February 6th, 2012 at 7:00 PM in the boardroom of the Emmett Township Building at 621 Cliff Street, Battle Creek, MI 49014. OPS plans to work with local public safety departments to implement workable solutions to code of conduct violations, which include: hunting/fishing, motorized vehicle riding, fornication, illicit drug use, and alcohol consumption. Their positive, can-do vision for the future of the preserve will include trail upkeep, trash removal, nominal improvements, and building friendships. OPS purpose is to promote sound management and passive recreational use that preserves the natural features and biodiversity of the Harvey N. Ott Biological Preserve, a Calhoun County Property. It echoes the desires of the Ott Preserves founders. They wished, that the one day Battle Creek will have a series of parks and playgrounds, some close to the heart of the city, where they can be reached by all and others, a little remote, where wild flowers, trees and bits of picturesque landscape could be preserved for generations yet unborn (Battle Creek Enquirer Evening News, April 30th, 1913). OPS will facilitate the Otts promise of healthy recreation, easy access, and a no cost place for people to engage in physical activity. The Ott should be a place for hikers, walkers, runners, cross-country skiers and physically challenged individuals to exercise and experience the grandeur of the outdoors all while in a safe, non-motorized environment for children and families. The Otts trails should be more than just places to exercise or enjoy the outdoors; they should act as meeting places for the community.

Please, come participate in the positive, productive future of the Ott Preserve!
