Start for Raiders Draheim

By Andrew Knowlton Staff Writer The Leonardtown Raiders couldnt have asked for more from pitcher Hunter Draheim in his first varsity start last Wednesday against Northern High School. Draheim, a junior, gave up just two runs in almost seven innings on the mound as the Raiders beat the visiting Patriots 9-2 for their third straight win of the season. There cant be enough said about [Draheim] said catcher Andrew Burgess. Thats his first start on varsity and thats the way to come in, I guess. For his first game of the season, I thought he did outstanding, added head coach Ray Sapp. I thought he did a real good job of keeping the pitches up and he got ahead most of the time. Draheim said he felt nervous about his first varsity start, but quickly settled in and played his game. I had the butterflies at the beginning of the game but once I got going, once I got through the first inning three-up three-down, I just kind of rolled from there, Draheim said. After striking out the first and third batters in the top of the first inning, Draheim got the Raiders on board with a hard infield single with two outs and the bases loaded, bringing in Kevin Miles from third. thought I was done, but luckily, one of the goalies had a spare in his car and I was able to continue playing. Just a few days later, the Bayhawks announced that England and four other players were being added to the roster. He was a little tiny guy but he was so fast nobody could stay with him. It was then that England was introduced to lacrosse. [Sothoron] encouraged me to pick up a stick and thought it was a sport I might enjoy when I got to [Ryken]. I went to a [lacrosse] camp at the University of Maryland during the summer of my eighth grade year. But for England, who says he was some-

where south of five feet tall and 90 lbs. at the time, the transition was not altogether smooth. I was horrible, he said. Couldnt catch, couldnt throw, couldnt cradle. A Family Affair Under Sothorons wing, however, England was soon molded into a great player. At Ryken, he was taught the fundamentals of the game and learned quickly. Two of those runs were scored when the Cougars hit a shot deep to centerfield and Carl Williams slipped while running after the ball. Continued from page B- but Jim was just a good athlete and he picked it up, Sothoron said. England also had expert coaching from Sothoron, who was an All-American at Towson in the early 70s. In fact, England is not the first of his Ryken players to make it to the pro level. His son, Reed, currently plays for the MLLs Denver Outlawz. Prior to that, he played for the San Francisco Dragons and the Rochester Rattlers. England and the Sothorons all keep close ties and make a point to get together a much as possible. England, who currently resides in Philadelphia, says he loves coming home to St. Marys County in the summer and whenever he can, hell get out on the water with his buddies. He also meets the Sothorons in Lake Placid every summer at an annual lacrosse tournament, and though John Sothoron doesnt coach England as much as he used to, he still stands on the sidelines cheering on his protg. Hes tough, too, and doesnt tolerate any less than 100 percent effort, England said of his old coach and mentor. He didnt just prepare us for college lax though, it was more about the bigger picture and giving it your best in all aspects of life. England still incorporates the lessons he was taught at Ryken and remains grateful of the opportunities John Sothoron helped provide. I dont think SMC would have even recruited me had Coach Sothoron not told them to come give me a look, England said. Making Moves After graduating Ryken in 95, England went up the road to Saint Marys College, where he continued to sharpen his skills. As a midfielder, he scored 54 career goals and had 35 assists on his way to becoming a First Team All-Conference player in the Capital Athletic Conference. Although he was putting up impressive numbers for the Seahawks, England was not totally convinced that he would one day play lacrosse for a living. Theres not a lot of guys from D III programs in the league, he said. Like any pro sport, most of the draft picks are from the top Division I programs. But, I guess I always felt like if I had a chance to tryout, I could surprise some people. Thats exactly what England did when he was invited to tryout for the Washington Bayhawks - he surprised people. The Bayhawks (formerly of Baltimore) are one of the six original teams in the MLL. A year after winning their second MLL Championship, the Bayhawks lost several players to trades and league expansion and on Nov. 15 of 2006, they announced their move to Washington. Meanwhile, England, who was a member of the supplemental draft pool, was playing in club leagues such as the Mt. Washington Lacrosse Club and MAB Paint. Along with acquiring England, the Bayhawks made other big moves during the off-season, bringing in some of the biggest names in MLL. We just made a blockbuster trade with the Boston Cannons to acquire Connor Gill and Ryan Curtis; two of the best players in the league, England said. I definitely think well improve over last years record (4-8). Coach Sothoron believes England will be a key addition to the squad. I think hell do very well, he said. Jim hasnt lost a step. He just blows right by people. Never Stop Working And while the Bayhawks still need to work on their fan base, England says the popularity of lacrosse in the area should make MLL games a hot ticket in D.C. So far the response from the fans Ive met has been positive, England said. Lacrosse is booming in the DC metro area, so hopefully we can take advantage of the larger market that D.C. provides. Englands excitement about the increased popularity of lacrosse does not stop at the professional level. When he was growing up in Southern Maryland, there werent even leagues for him to play in. Today, lacrosse is one of the most popular sports in both private and public schools. Im especially glad to see kids playing at a younger age, England said. Its great to see lax being played at the public schools as well. It may be true that there are 380,000 student athletes in the NCAA and most of them go pro in something other than sports, but that doesnt mean give up, according to England. Never stop working, England says. Because you never know when opportunity is going to come knocking.

Ryken saw 11 players contribute goals against Carroll, in a game that was mostly played by the Knights junior varsity squad. After two goals from Bray Dunaway, one from Reggie Harvey and another from Tyler Spaulding all in the first four minutes of play, Ryken coach John Sothoron decided to put his junior varsity squad in the game. We played them last year and theyre not the strongest team. Theyre not a Gonzaga or DeMatha. said sophomore Addison Goodley, who scored two goals in the game. We try and get everyone in, move the ball around and we try not to rack up the score. We just

work on the fundamentals. With just three available substitutes on the sideline, Carroll had a very difficult time keeping up with the Knights. Its a short number of kids and its pretty hot out for the kids, Carroll coach John McKinnon said. St. Marys Ryken is a good team and we dont have the numbers, so theyre going t run you in the ground but our kids never quit and they never gave up. The win over Carroll not only allowed Rykens young players to get some experience on the field, but it gave the varsity team a chance to rest up a bit before a critical game against Gonzaga, who has played in the WCAC championship game against DeMatha for the past six years, according to Sothoron. Its good they get rest, Goodley said. Theyre a little banged up from all the other games, so its a good break. But Monday wasnt entire-

ly a day to rest for the varsity players. Before the game and after the game, the Knights squad took the practice field to prepare for Gonzaga, who is the only team St. Marys did not beat last year. That game was played on Wednesday and results were unavailable when The County Times went to press. On Saturday, the Knights will have another challenge when they face St. Stephens; a team Sothoron believes is even better than Gonzaga. But playing these tough teams does not scare the Knights, as they thrive on taking on the best teams on the east coast every season, according to Sothoron. The big boys are coming to town Wednesday and Saturday, Sothoron said. But were on a roll. Weve got four wins in a row.

al, my bracket more or less flopped. I did my research and watched these teams play all season long. I thought I had it figured out. I thought I knew a thing or two about sports. Wrong! Im starting to think I should have my mother fill this here space with her own words. My mother just racked up 350 spankies for winning her March Madness pool at work, while I sit here scratching my head and wondering why I couldnt even pick the Final Four correctly. While

ESP. It was October 15, 1997 and my family and I were watching game six of the ALCS between the Baltimore Orioles and the Cleveland Indians. Mussina was pinned up on the mound against the Indians Charles Nagy and both were pitching an amazing game. After nine innings, the game was tied at zero and the Os put Armando Benitez on the mound. If you remember Benitez, you remember a vicious, but unpredictable fastball that either struck a batter out or was sent deep over the left field fence. When Tony Fernandez stepped into the batters box to face Benitez in the top of the 11th, my mom, who had not commented on the game all night, said nonchalantly, Oh, hes going to hit a homerun. What happens next? Of course, Fernandez cranks it out of the park and the Indians are off to the World Series. That was just the beginning. That was when it first came to my attention that my mother had an amazing skill that could make her a fortune. Since then, my mother has forecasted the following unpredictable sports moments: Kobe Bryant scoring 81 points, Zindine Zidanes World Cup head-butt, Sammy Sosas corked bat incident, George Masons astonishing run to the Final Four, the Red Sox coming from three games behind to beat the Yankees in the 2004 ALCS, Floyd Landis drug scandal, the Pacers vs. Pistons and Piston fans brawl, the winner of the Little League World Series every year since 1998, and the list goes on and on. By: Jesse Stump Contributing Writer In the mid 80s and early 90s the minivan was the vehicle of choice for soccer moms everywhere. I remember a time when nearly every driveway on my street contained a minivan in one form or another. Over time these grocerygetters developed a stigma for being un-hip and as with all fads began to lose their appeal. Enter the modern day SUV. Yes, the SUV provided parents with the cool factor their Caravans lacked and 4-wheel drive functionality instilled a new sense of safety and adventure. It was a marvelous courtship but it too would not last. Skyrocketing fuel prices and an ever-growing environmental concern began to tug at the SUVs popularity. Always willing to oblige, automakers introduced the newest trend in family transportation with the smaller and more economical car-based Crossover SUV. Over the past few weeks I had the opportunity to test drive the Mazda CX-7, the Ford Edge, and the Nissan Murano - the following is their head to head comparison. fact that the Muranos exterior has gone essentially untouched since its introduction in 2003. The Edge finishes second thanks to its bold and unconventional look. Ford could have mimicked some of the classs veterans but chose instead to point the Edge in a more truck-like direction. Fords trademark three-bar chrome grille once again makes an appearance and to be honest its starting to grow on me. The CX-7 finishes in the rear mainly for its lack of originality and somewhat bland styling. I couldnt help but look at the CX-7 as a toned down version of the Murano. Mazda should however take one hint from 2007 Mazda CX-7 its competition and toss some chrome in places where they currently have black plastic. ally see getting some use. The CX-7s interior is nice in its own right but happens to be up against some pretty stiff competition. I was a bit disappointed with the sound system but other than that I have few qualms.

The Murano takes the cake for its edgy yet sophisticated styling. It has a sleek and aerodynamic stance paired with an SUV-like seven inches of ground clearance. Even more impressive is the

Interior
The Edge gets the nod for having the classiest cabin of the group. Its not too often that I rave about a Fords interior but I must admit that I was pleasantly surprised. I am a big fan of the Edges panoramic Vista Roof and if youre not, youre given the option of a rear DVD entertainment system in its place. Rare as it may be, Ford definitely hit the nail on the head this time around. Regardless, the Muranos cabin is comfortable and roomy and the Bose sound system does its job just fine. Nissans new Intelligent Key is an appealing feature that I could actu-

AWD is about as simple to use as it sounds. The Edge is a bit out of its league in a class of vehicles that handle like well proportioned sedans. Its the heaviest of the three and lacks the car-like feel that makes a cross-over well, a cross-over.

Test Drive
Though it was a bit of a toss up, my vote goes to the CX-7 for its impressive mix of handling and acceleration. I was honestly shocked by the amount of low-end torque that this turbocharged 4-cylinder produces. I had seen the specs but until I felt this thing pull without the slightest hint of turbo-lag I didnt believe them. The 6-speed transmission is smooth and responsive and the CX-7 negotiates sharp corners like a sports sedan. The Murano also provides a great ride but lacks somewhat in low-end acceleration. It posts the fastest numbers in the mile but the majority of its get-up takes place after 50mph. The Murano handles very well and its push-button

Overall
The Nissan Murano gets my vote for being the best all around cross-over SUV on the market. Though it is priced significantly higher than its competition I think in this case it may just be worth those extra hours of overtime. The Mazda CX-7 may not be as well endowed but is probably a better bang for your buck if you can look past its shortcomings. For that reason it finishes a close second. The Ford Edge is by no means a slouch and would be a great pick for someone looking for a cross-over with a more truck-like attitude.

forth inning, when Northern had the bases loaded with just one out. But Draheim fielded a hard shot that came right back to the mound and turned a 1-6-3 double play to get out of the jam. In the bottom of the fifth, Leonardtown added two runs on a single by Brady Jameson, scoring Draheim and infielder Stephen Katulich. An inning later, the Raiders knocked in another three runs. John Capasso started the bottom of the sixth with a walk, before moving to third on a single from Miles. Burgess got a base hit to load the bases and then Northerns pitcher walked in a run from third. Up next to bat was Draheim, who cranked a two RBI triple to left field, giving Leonardtown a 9-0 lead. We had timely hits, said Draheim. We hit the ball with

runners in scoring position. I saw the ball very well today, added Burgess, who got on base in every one of his at bats. I just put the bat on the ball and see what happens. After giving up two runs in the bottoms of the seventh, Hinaman came in for Draheim to finish off the game. Im ecstatic, said Burgess after the game. I mean, we stepped up immensely, it was crazy. Our pre-game warm-ups we werent looking too good, but we stepped up, we pulled together and got the W. With a perfect 3-0 record under their belts, the Raiders have high hopes for the rest of the season. Our goal is a SMAC championship and that was our goal from day one and thats going to be the goal at

the end of the season, said Durheim. In order to do that, Leonardtown will have to make sure they continue doing what theyve done right so far, according to Durheim. [We need to] keep working hard in practice, keep hitting the ball, keep the game focused, dont take any team for granted, he said. Microchips Reunite Pets With Their Owners

Tri-County Animal Shelter There are many animalrelated lessons learned from Hurricane Katrina. One is the importance of identification for pets. Many people were evacuated to other states. The animals went to shelters and rescue groups that had room for them, and in many instances these were not in the same state, or even the same side of the country, as their owners. Many owners did not recognize their own pets at shelters or on websites where photographs were posted, because their animals were filthy, had lost weight, or had obtained facial injuries while running at large. Hardly any animals displayed any identification. This made it very hard to reunite pets with their owners. Many communities, including St. Marys County, require pets to display a county license. This ensures that your pet has current identification and a rabies shot. Pet owners should also consider having their pet micro-chipped. This is a permanent, internal identification system that acts as a backup should your pets collar and tags come off. A microchip is a piece of metal, about the size of a grain of rice, and is injected under the skin in the shoulder area. The microchip contains a number that registers back to the pet owner. Animal shelters and veterinary offices have scanners that can read the chip. All animals that come into a shelter are scanned for a microchip: if the animal has a chip, the scanner acts as a metal detector and beeps. The number for the microchip is displayed on a screen, and the information can be traced back to the owner. Microchips are valuable tools in helping to reunite lost pets with their owners. Generally, only 2 to 3 percent of cats and 15 to 20 percent of dogs in shelters nationwide are reunited with their owners, because most pets do not have any form of identification. All cats and dogs adopted from the Tri-County Animal Shelter receive a microchip. The Tri-County Animal Shelter urges you to make an appointment with your veterinarian today to have your pet micro-chipped. It could be what returns your pet to you if youre separated due to a disaster or something as simple as a gate accidentally left open.

On March 26, 2007 at approximately 0600 hours, a black male approximately 6 tall, 180 lbs. entered a Friendly Cab in the area of North Essex Drive in Lexington Park. In the area of South Essex Drive and South Shangri-La Drive, the suspect displayed a knife and demanded money. The driver complied and the suspect fled on foot with an undisclosed amount of currency. The Bureau of Criminal Investigations is investigating the incident. 36 of Nanjemoy, was arrested by Corporal Christopher Morley for Violation of Parole. Failure to Appear.

Michelle Lynn Cundiff, age 35 of Mechanicsville, was charged on a Criminal Summons by Deputy Angela Muller with Passing a Worthless Check having a value of $33.00.

Alvin Rawlings Thorne III, age 51 of Lexington Park, was arrested by Deputy Michael George for an outstanding warrant through Prince Georges County. The warrant was related to four counts of Violation of Probation, which was issued in 1988.

Possession
A 17-year-old Lexington Park male was arrested by Deputy Michael George after a vehicle stop. The suspect was discovered in the parking lot of a closed business during a routine check. K-9 Deputy First Class Edward Evans and his partner Yanic conducted a scan of the vehicle. Several smoking devices and a quantity of marijuana were discovered after a positive alert.

Destruction of Property
On Thursday, March 29, 2007 at 12:04 pm, TFC Grimes responded to the 45000 block of Buckshot Way for a reported unauthorized use. Contact was made with the 30 year old male complainant, of Tall Timbers, who advised Dominique Trenne Queen, 20, of Lexington Park used his vehicle without permission. The suspect, Ms. Queen became disorderly and was subsequently placed under arrest. She was charged with disorderly conduct, unauthorized use of a motor vehicle and malicious destruction of property. Ms. Queen was transported to the St. Marys County Detention Center pending a bond review.

Hampton Drive in Lexington Park for an equipment violation. Contact was made with the driver, Ryan Adam Cole, 18, of Mechanicsville. During the course of the traffic stop Mr. Cole was found in possession of a marijuana cigar. Mr. Cole was placed under arrest and transported to the St. Marys County Detention Center pending a bond review.

On Saturday, March 31, 2007 at 6:13 am, Tpr. Adams initiated a traffic stop on a gray Mitsubishi Galant on Route 235, south of Airport View Drive in Hollywood for exceeding the posted speed limit. Contact was made with the driver, William Michael Obrien, 18, of Waldorf. During the course of the traffic stop Mr. Obrien was found to be in possession of CDS paraphernalia and a butterfly knife. Mr. Obrien was arrested for possession of a concealed deadly weapon and CDS paraphernalia. Mr. Obrien transported to the St. Marys County Detention Center pending a bond review.

On March 27, 2007, Deputy First Class Gray Maloy Arrested Steven Roger Jerome, age 20 of Leonardtown, on an arrest warrant issued by the Circuit Court for Failure to Appear for Sentencing.

On March 28, 2007, Deputy First Class John Logalbo arrested Edwina Denise Fenwick, age 44 of Lexington Park, for Possession of Cocaine after being called to the Days Inn in Lexington Park for the intoxicated person in the parking lot.

Traffic Violation
Ronan Frederick Breaux, age 44 of Mechanicsville, was stopped for a traffic violation and found to be suspended to operate a vehicle in the State of Maryland. A search incident to that arrest revealed a baggie of marijuana. Deputy Anthony Whipkey was the arresting deputy.

K-9 Deputy First Class Edward Evans arrested Mary Elaine Young, age 47 of Lexington Park, for Driving While Intoxicated.

Terry Edward Jones, age 43 of Baltimore, was arrested by Deputy Martin Mumper for Violation of Probation.

Burglary
On Friday, March 30, 2007 at 4:45 am, Tpr. Shughart responded to the 46000 block of Hilton Drive in Lexington Park for a reported theft from motor vehicle. Contact was made with the 21 year old male complainant, who advised unknown suspect(s) stole a Sirius Radio and an after market car radio from his vehicle. Investigation is continuing.

On Saturday, March 31, 2007 at 9:48 am, Tpr. McCartney initiated a traffic stop on a silver Ford Escape on Route 5, at Baptist Church Road in Mechanicsville for exceeding the posted speed limit. Contact was made with the driver, Brandon Eric Bentley, 24, of Alexandria, Virginia. During the course of the traffic stop, Mr. Bentley was found to be in possession of marijuana and CDS paraphernalia. He was placed under arrest for possession of marijuana and CDS paraphernalia and transported to the St. Marys County Detention Center pending a bond review.

On March 29, 2007, Senior Deputy First Class David Yingling arrested Richard Larry Bassford, age 33 of Lexington Park, on an arrest warrant issued by the District Court for Second Degree Assault.

Sherry Lynn King, age 31 of no fixed address, was arrested by Senior Deputy First Class Harold Young on an open warrant for Contempt of Court.

Outstanding Warrant
Stacey Synette Nelson, age 35 Lexington Park, was arrested on an outstanding warrant through Charles County District Court. Deputy Zorana Sipos was the arresting deputy.

Destruction of Property
During the hours of darkness, between March 22nd thru March 31st, numerous vehicles traveling south on Patuxent Beach Road have been struck by objects thrown from a wooded area. Several of the thrown objects have been identified as large rocks which have caused damage totaling thousands of dollars. The Maryland State Police is requesting the assistance of anyone living in this community to provide information which can lead to the identity and arrest of the person(s) responsible for these dangerous and criminal acts. On Friday, March 30, 2007 at 10:01 am, TFC Linger initiated a traffic stop on a black Dodge Neon for an equipment violation at Route 5, at Golden Beach Road in Mechanicsville. Contact was made with the driver, John Kevin Nancarrow, 25, of Brandywine. TFC Linger observed marijuana on the drivers side floorboard. Mr. Nancarrow was placed under arrest for possession of marijuana. A search incident to arrest revealed three partially burnt marijuana cigarettes in the center console ashtray and a plastic straw containing cocaine residue on the passenger floorboard. Mr. Nancarrow was charged with possession of cocaine, possession of marijuana and CDS paraphernalia. He was transported to the St. Marys County Detention Center pending a bond review.

Bench warrant arrests

On March 29, 2007, Deputy Timothy White arrested Lisa Marie Hemler, age 38 of Lexington Park, on a Bench Warrant issued for Failure to Appear. On March 29, 2007, Deputy First Class Robert Merritt arrested Lori Ann Horton, age 44 of Lexington Park, on a Bench Warrant issued by the District Court.

John Anthony Supersky, age 46 of Great Mills, was arrested for Failure to Pay Child Support.

Maurice Delonete Stoney, age 40 of Lexington Park, was arrested by Deputy James Stone for Failure to Appear.

Possession
On Saturday, March 31, 2007 at 10:16 am, TFC Linger was patrolling Great Mills Road in Lexington Park when he observed two males in a parking lot across from Canopy Liquors. As TFC Linger approached Darryll Boyd, 20, of Lexington Park, he began to run and a short foot chase ensued. Mr. Boyd was apprehended and he was founded to be in possession of a small plastic bag of marijuana and $687.00 in currency. Mr. Boyd was arrested for possession of marijuana, resisting arrest and false statement to a police officer and transported to the St. Marys County Detention Center pending a bond review.

Assault
Joshua Alexander Mason, age 23 of Clements, was arrested for an open warrant through the District Court. The suspect had stabbed a family member one (1) time in the side before stealing a cellular phone. Suspect Mason was charged with Assault First and Second Degree, Armed Robbery and Theft Under $500.00.

Property Destruction
Allen Conrad Thompson, age 29 of Mechanicsville, was charged on a Criminal Summons for Property Destruction by Deputy William Watters. Suspect Thompson destroyed the roadway and adjoining grass, having a value of $285.00.

On March 23, 2007, Senior Deputy First Class Michael Peacher arrested Angela Renee Jordan, age 44 of Catonsville, for Failure to Appear for a Child Support Hearing in the Circuit Court of Calvert County.

Kevin Price, age 49 of Washington D.C., was arrested on a Grand Jury Indictment. The charge was related to a burglary that was investigated by Detective David Alexander. The arrest was made by Senior Deputy First Class Harold Young. K-9 Deputy First Class Todd Fleenor conducted a vehicle stop on Great Mills Road and found that the suspect, George Norman Hill Jr., age 23 of California, was intoxicated. Deputy First Class Fleenors K-9 partner, Darzan completed a scan of the vehicle. A positive alert was indicated and inside the vehicle was a quantity of marijuana in a plastic soap holder. Suspect Hill was charged accordingly.

Patrol Deputies responded to the reported Burglary at a Lexington Park home. Upon arrival, Deputy First Class Brian Connelly located the victim inside his home and the suspect was located and detained in the front yard of the residence. Citizen involvement in the planning process is encouraged.
