lives. You can personally mentor them and also keep yourself updated about
his/her academic and overall progress.

2. HELPING HAND SOCIETY - HHS
2.1 About Us

Helping Hand Society looks at itself as a For-Impact organization. The

society was formed by college students from Hyderabad, India. Since
inception, it has worked towards the general goal of helping the needy.

2.2 Mission

To create a fund to support the education of children, hailing from

economically weaker sections of the society.
To establish a modern facility for the education, vocational training and
the all-round development of orphaned and street children.
To encourage people to volunteer and donate for the welfare of the needy,
the ailing, the old, the orphaned and the differently-abled.
To maintain a donor database to ensure the availability of blood during
medical emergencies and to organize blood donation camps regularly.
To conduct awareness programs for students from government schools, to
aid their overall development.
To campaign for the conservation of natural resources and to encourage
the use of alternate sources of energy.

2.3 More About HHS

Today the organization has diversified significantly and handles a variety of

activities ranging from running a Home for 20 children, working towards
raising general awareness level in school children, to organizing Blood
Donation Camps.

HHS looks at the act of taking care of the all-round development of children,
as an investment with the expected returns of them turning out as upright
and self reliant citizens of tomorrow. That is the reason it takes pride in
branding itself, not as a charity or non-profit organization, but a For-Impact
organization.

5
The society has been enriched along the way, with many like-minded
individuals and various student organizations joining and making the cause
of HHS, their own. The organization draws its strength from a group of
committed individuals, most of them students or young professionals. Owing
to their diverse academic backgrounds, each one brings forth a different skill-
set and a unique strength. HHS appreciates this diversity and utilizing it to
the hilt, in task division.

Having grown into a mature organization today, HHS looks forward to

continue doing its part for the society and expects more like-minded
individuals to join in the endeavor.

2.4 HHS – Activities

meal for facilities like rehabilitation centers, orphanages, old age homes and
schools. We also like to spend quality time with the kids, organizing games or

educate the students on personality development, health, social and
environmental awareness.

2.5 HHS – Activities – In Depth

Shivananda Rehabilitation Home [30-07-2006]

This was the first official visit of Helping Hand Society.

Shivananda Rehabilitation Home located at Kukatpally houses around 600
patients, some suffering from leprosy, some from blindness and HIV+
children. The aim of our visit was to spend some quality time with the
patients, know their experiences and sponsor the day’s meal. We met people
who have inhabited the place for the past twenty years.

6
Devnar Blind School [20-08-2006]

Devnar blind school is one of the biggest schools for the blind
in India. The school is particularly close to the heart of many us [the core
team members] who have visited the place several times. The aim of the visit
was to sponsor a child’s education for a year, arrange lunch for the children
and to spend some quality time entertaining them.

Pocharam Visit [28-12-2006]

This orphanage located in Pocharam village near Ghatkesar,

is home to 23 little boys and girls who study at a local government school. It
also houses few private school boarders. It is being run by Open Door
Ministries, as a non-profit organization. We provided the children with a
year’s supply of stationary, which included a set of 12 books each, pencils,
erasers, rulers and lunch boxes. We also arranged the day’s lunch.

Sponsored Two Kids From Medak [11-01-2007]

The kids are studying class V at the Government School, Siddipet, Medak.
One lost his parents and works as a beedi worker, the other is a daily wage
worker. Having seen their situation and inability to continue their education
due to financial constraints, their teacher approached HHS for possible
support. After personally going there and taking stock of the situation, the
HHS team decided to sponsor their education for a year.

HHS Supported Saravanan [01-02-2007]

Saravanan, a native of Chennai was suffering from paralysis in his limbs.

Young Helping Minds, a peer organization had identified him and decided to
support him by purchasing a device from Germany which would aid to restore
the senses in his limbs and thereby gradually help him walk again. We, at
Helping Hand Society extended our support for this noble cause by donating
for the purchase of the machine.

Blood Donation Camp [08-04-2007]

7
On the 8th of April, 2007, we furthered our vision to engage
in diversified activities by conducting a Blood Donation Camp at KPHB
colony, Hyderabad. LIONS CLUB (south) and SATHKRUTHI joined us in
this endeavor.

Vineela Reddy, a core team member of HHS, is a resident of the KPHB

colony. And with her help we first located around hundred donors and then
began the ground work for organizing the camp. We convinced the colony
president to allow us to use of one of the colony parks. We tied up with the
LIONS CLUB team and started campaigning for the event, a week in
advance. We went around the colony, knocked on the doors and convinced
them to volunteer for donation.

The response we got was very encouraging.

Ashreya Chetana [13-06-2007]

The visit to Ashraya Chetana Rehabilitation Home

located at Nizampet, Kukatpally was on 13th June, 2007. The schedule
included providing a day’s lunch to around 21 elderly citizens and over 20
children. Among them were: parents neglected by their kids in old age,
women, some of whom were rape victims and children who ran away from
their homes.

Each one of them had a story to tell, of how they came to inhabit the
rehabilitation facility.

Good Samaritan Orphanage [24-06-2007]

This event was arranged on 24th June 2007. This orphanage

located in Pocharam village near Ghatkesar, is home to 23 little boys and
girls who study at a local government school. It also houses few private school
8
boarders. It is being run by Open Door Ministries, as a non-profit organization.
We provided the children with a year’s supply of stationary, which included a
set of 12 books each, pencils, erasers, rulers and lunch boxes. We also
arranged the day’s lunch.

ZPHS, Govt High School Kukatpally [29-09-2007]

This was the first event under the "Heal Andhra Pradesh"
program, initiated by HHS. It was held at Zilla Parishad High School,
Kukatpally, Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh, India.

As part of this program, HHS conducted sessions on personality development,

social and medical awareness. We used power point presentations and
animation to drive home the points we were trying to make. Activities and
games were used to make the session more interactive and helpful. Prizes
were also distributed to the winners.

Sphoorthi Foundation [20-10-2007]

Away from the city’s pollution, Sphoorti accommodates 45

children and is run by four care takers. It provides all the facilities needed for
the children. The kids welcomed us with infectious broad smiles, which soon
graced us too.

Our new team members, Vidyut and Kiran were overwhelmed seeing their
vigor, sharpness and discipline. The children showed their paintings which
was followed by a dance session. We could only try to match their spirit.

We then spoke to Srivyal, the founder of Sphoorti, who told us about the food,
the medication they provide and how the over-all needs of the children are
taken care of. He told us about the foundation’s future plans and also how we
could help him take it forward.
