FILM IDC4O

The Press Kit Final Assignment

Group Names:

Imagine that you are filmmakers and you have been hired
to make a movie (you may create a sequel to an existing
movie or make up your own if you like). One of the things a
new film does is to create a Press Kit.

A press kit helps

filmmakers promote their movie among press outlets, film

festivals, potential distributors, and studios. At a
minimum, a press kit should contain a poster of the movie, a
short and long synopsis of the story, cast bios, producer,
director, screenwriter bios, and a full cast and crew list.
Working alone or in groups of no more than four, you will
create a press kit for your film.

Heres what you have to

do:
1. Select a title for your film.

Be creative, you want

the viewer to want to be intrigued.

For example, if

your film is an animated film about a talking shoe who

survives a plane crash, dont call it The Talking
Shoe, call it Sole Survivor (see the pun?).
2. Create a Tag Line for your film.

This is the one or

two lines on a poster that sums up the mood, theme or

plot of a film (e.g. In Space No One Can Hear You
Scream Alien, 1979; or Their war.

Our world.

Transformers, 2007).
3. Identify the genre of your film.
Sci-fi?

Animated film?

Film Noir?

4. Write a synopsis for your film.

about?

Is it a comedy?

Who are the characters?

Other?

What is the movie

What are the Big

Event and the Catalyst?

What are the obstacles and

the final goal? Include a beginning, middle and end.

5. Cast your film.

You must have at least one

protagonist, at least one antagonist and at least two

supporting characters (you may have more than one of
any of the above).

If you chose animation, will you

use celebrity voices or voice actors?

chose your cast.

Explain why you

Be sure to include character

descriptions (physical attributes, gender, skills

and/or abilities, etc).
6. Identify your Target Market (who do you specifically
want to watch your film?).
7. Identify the soundtrack.
Modern pop or rock music?
you include?

Will it be orchestral?
What artists/songs would

Explain why you chose this style of

music for your film.

8. What merchandising tie-ins to your film, such as
action figures, fast food restaurant meals, posters
and T-shirts, video games, etc., will you have?

What

do you base this campaign on?

9. Create a marketing campaign for your film by creating
a movie poster.

Be sure to include the title,

director (can be more than one), producer (can be more

than one), production company, and actors.

Use a font

that reflects the genre. Ensure that: the background

images and/or colour reflect the plot and setting;
layout is well-designed, organized and available space
is used wisely. Explain why you think this campaign
will be successful.
10.Provide a release date for your film.

Christmas?

EXTRA BONUS MARKS SEGMENT

If you would like to earn some extra marks, you may wish to
actually film your story or maybe create a short trailer
(like you would see before a main feature at the movies or
on a DVD).

If you choose to do so, you may use any props,

film clips, sound effects, music, etc. that you can find (we
will not concern ourselves with copyright issues for this
assignment, though these are very serious issues) in your
assignment.
Use the sheets in this booklet to create your Press
Kit.

OR . . . you may want to create your press kit in a

different format (an envelope containing official studio

documents, publicity stills, etc.).
As always, be creative.

You will get out of this

assignment what you put into this assignment.

Have fun.

Light . . . Camera . . . ACTION!
