Kaslo Food Security Update!
Te Kaslo Food Security Project is updating the West
Kootenay Food Directory and the Farmland Database and
we need your input!
Our communities have been learning about how im-
portant it is to consume local food. With growing con-
cerns over accessing the essential need for nutrients and
our global food system increasingly serving up question-
able, unhealthy, unafordable, and environmentally toxic
food, we have to reclaim and rebuild our local food sys-
tem. Community groups within the West Kootenay have
been providing lots of education and tools leading to an
increased capacity and hunger to consume local food.
Now the challenge is to increase local food production to
feed that local appetite.
Te West Kootenay Food Directory is a listing of both
farmers and retailers of local food. With all of the interest
in increasing our local food consumption, the West Koo-
tenay Food Directory aims to be a source of connection
between eaters and those who provide local food. If you
are a grower, seller, procurer, or promoter of local food,
please contact the Kaslo Food Security Project so we can
include your information in the directory.
Te Farmland Database is a listing of both farmers and
landowners who are looking to also increase the local food
capacity for the West Kootenay area. Te database pro-
vides listings of land available as well as farmers looking
to fnd land to steward. With the cost of land being pro-
hibitive for a farmers wage, the Farmland Database aims
to connect farmers with land where they can grow food
afordably. With the need to support and encourage farm-
ers, the West Kootenay Food Directory and the Farmland
Database were both created to support local farmers and
markets to increase local food production.

Champions For Change Awards
Champions are among us! If you know someone who
has played a signifcant role in promoting tobacco free
living why not give them a pat on the back and nomin-
ate them for a Smoke Free Champions for Change Award?!
Tese Interior Health awards honour people who have
made a diference in the lives of others by promoting
smoke-free spaces, helping people quit smoking and pre-
venting people from starting to smoke.
A Smoke Free Champion for Change is someone who
goes beyond their regular everyday work to reduce to-
bacco use and its harmful efects in their community,
says Trish Hill, Senior Tobacco Reduction Coordinator.
Champions show leadership and commitment, and their
work ofen plays an important role in infuencing people
to change their use of tobacco.
Nominations open Monday, January 16, 2012 and close
Friday, April 13. Te Smoke Free Champions for Change
awards are open to both Interior Health staf and com-
munity members.
Nominating a champion is easy. Nomination forms will
be available on the Interior Health website at www.inter-
iorhealth.ca just look for the smoke free champions link
or use the search engine. Forms can be submitted online,
by fax to 250-505-7211 or by mail to Smoke Free Cham-

Six champions will be announced and awarded $50 gif cer-

region in assessing clients mental health status, formulating a plan
of care, implementing planned care and evaluating outcomes.
As the facilitator for a weekly drop-in program, you will assist
adults with a mental illness to develop the skills and confdence
necessary to live satisfying and productive lives in the community.
This assistance is provided in a psychosocial program designed
to empower and support its members. The confdential voluntary
drop-in program provides a non-institutional setting where adults
with a mental illness give each other support as they work to rebuild
their confdence, stamina, and concentration, and social interactions.

owner surrender. He is a very afectionate boy who
gets along well with his fellow roommates, but
prefers his people. Snowball has a beautiful, soft,

organizations that made our annual Food Cupboard and
Hampers fundraising an abundant success! We were able
to raise $4700 plus received over 500 items of food! We
would like to acknowledge the students of Lakeside Learn-
ing Centre who braved the cold every day, raising over
$1500. Bob Yetter, who organized the second annual Fast
for Food, raising over $1300, and many others who put their
cold feet and comforts aside to contribute to the funds. The

In mid-December, volunteers with the Kootenay Animal Assistance Program
Society (KAAP) trapped 17 cats and kittens from an abandoned trailer in the
mountains. These former pets had been left behind to fend for themselves, and
had not been fed for over 6 weeks.
Thanks to the wonderful community in the Kootenays, there was lots of help
for these cats. We are grateful to Dr. Pat Haegedorn, the folks at the Pennywise,
volunteers who drove cats to foster homes and the vet, and the Nelson SPCA for
taking some of these rescues into their adoption centre.
The Osprey Community Foundation provided the funds to spay and neuter, and
give other vet care to these cats through the Nelson Community Pet Rehabilitation
Project. Please visit the projects Facebook page for updates and other pets that
are receiving help.

Arts, Culture And
Heritage Grant Applications
Artists in all disciplines as well as arts, culture and
heritage organizations are invited to apply for fund-
ing through the Columbia Kootenay Cultural Alliance
(CKCA), which delivers the Arts, Culture and Heritage
Program of Columbia Basin Trust (CBT).
For 2012/2013, funding has increased by $55,000 to
$706,000. Tis will help CKCA better meet demand in
sought-afer programs like minor capital for arts and herit-
age facilities, support for touring and major project funding.
Funding is available for: individual and group projects;
minor capital projects; touring; arts and heritage men-
toring/master classes; organizational development; major
projects; artists in education; major exhibits; major herit-
age capital projects; and heritage projects.
Tis is support for our neighbours, our museums, our
local theatre troupes - for the many ways arts, culture and
heritage weave through our lives, said Gary Ockenden,
CBT Director of Community Engagement. Were proud
CBT can strengthen this sector in order to beneft the
whole community.

Kaslo Teens Yarnbomb Library
According to Wikipedia Yarn bombing, yarnbombing,
yarnstorming, guerrilla knitting, or graf ti knitting is a
type of graf ti or street art that employs colorful displays
of knitted or crocheted cloth rather than paint or chalk.
While yarn installations called yarn bombs or yarn-
storms may last for years, they are considered non-perma-
nent, and, unlike graf ti, can be easily removed if necessary.
While other forms of graf ti may be expressive, decora-
tive, territorial, socio-political commentary, advertising or
vandalism, yarn bombing was initially almost exclusively
about reclaiming and personalizing sterile or cold public
places. It has since developed with groups graf ti knitting
worldwide each with their own agendas.
On Saturday afernoons from February 4 to March 10
from 2 pm to 4 pm, Kaslo area teens have the opportunity
to learn to knit while yarnbombing the library or making
cozies for personal items such as cell phones, IPods etc.
Yarn Bombing is currently found mostly in urban set-
tings, as a public statement and a way for crafy folks to
warm up and beautify cold, hard city places. Te Kaslo
teen yarn bombers will make this a more rural project by
using the bombs to make the library cozy and beautiful.
Tis is a free program ofered to everyone ages 12 to 18
years. All materials and instruction will be provided and
beginners are welcome.

Be A Volunteer!
For women who would like to beneft others and learn
more about the community, the Nelson and District
Womens Centre and the West Kootenay Womens Asso-
ciation ofers a volunteer training option.
Volunteer Service Training, runs from Saturday, Febru-
ary 4 to Saturday, March 3. Tis 8-week series on Turs-
days and Saturdays, will give women the skills they need to
support other women in our community. A basic explora-
tion of regional services and an in-depth introduction to
the Womens Centre will be ofered, giving women the
ability to participate in the centre with information and
confdence.

Jumbo Update Winter 2012
Recently I asked Psyche Brown, Manager of Major Pro-
jects within the Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Re-
source Operations (FLNRO), what the latest was with the
Jumbo Resort development proposal.
She told me, Based on commitments that Peter Wal-
ters (recently assigned Assistant Deputy Minister of First
Nations & Community Opportunities within the Ministry
of Aboriginal Relations & Reconciliation) had made with
the Ktunaxa Nation, they and the Shuswap Nation (near
Invermere) were provided with binders containing all the
information upon which Steve Tomson, Minister of FL-
NRO, will rely on to make his decision regarding the pro-
posed resort.
Included in the package is the land use report and the
aboriginal interest consideration report with many at-
tachments. Te Ktunaxa and Shuswap Nations have until
January 23, 2012 to scrutinize the material for any gaps
or inaccuracies.
Last summer Mr. Tomson met with the Ktunaxa and
toured the site of the development proposal while in In-
vermere. However he has continued to ignore invitations
to meet with any representatives of either the Jumbo Creek
Conservation Society and/or Wildsight. It will be afer
January 23, 2012 that Minister Tomson may make his
decision.
It was in November 2010 that the Ktunaxa Nations Dele-
gation to the legislature presented their QatMuk Declara-
tion which declared, among other points, that the whole
Jumbo area is a sacred cultural site for them. At the time of
the QatMuk anniversary, November 2011, they renewed
their call for the province to deny the Jumbo Glacier Re-
sort development proposal.
Also, relevant to the Jumbo issue is that An audit was
done recently on the Environmental Assessment Of ce,
Ms Brown said. Te EAO were badly beaten up for not
doing well enough on compliance follow-up, and, that
they never disapprove an application. Psyche defended
the EAO saying they only give the nod to applications
they feel are viable.

Canine Good Neighbour Trial
Te West Kootenay Kennel Club will be hosting a Canine
Good Neighbour (CGN) Trial on Sunday, February 19 from
2 pm to 4 pm at the Castlegar Complex. Te Canadian Ken-
nel Clubs Canine Good Neighbour Program is a full Obedi-
ence Title, open to all dogs, both purebred and mixed-breed
dogs, and aims to identify and reward responsible, caring
owners and their canine partners throughout Canada. Tis
non competitive test aspires to have dogs accepted as valued
members of our communities. Canine Good Neighbours
can be counted on to present good manners at home, in
public places and in the presence of other dogs.
Twelve tests are used to assess the handler and dogs re-
lationship, together with the handlers ability to control
the dog. Dogs are evaluated on their ability to perform
basic exercises as well as their ability to demonstrate good
manners in everyday situations, including accepting a
friendly stranger, coming when called, and reacting to
distractions and other passing dogs. Successful dogs will
receive a Certifcate from the Canadian Kennel Club.
Te Canadian Kennel Club and the West Kootenay
Kennel Club encourage all dog owners to participate in
this program, ensuring that our beloved canines are wel-
come and respected members of our communities.
Please note: If you have a registered dog, please bring
your registration papers to the trial so that your dog can
have his/her full name, with proper spelling on the CKC
issued certifcate with the title CGN afer it. Also, please
bring your vaccination information and your dogs brush
for the grooming section of the test. If you live in a com-

bring your dogs tag.
