The first tank was built in February 1942 at Lima Locomotive Works, with the Pressed Steel Company and Pacific Car and Foundry joining in until may 1942. In December 1943, the last M4Al left the assembly line at Pressed Steel. Production of the M4 ended after assembly of 1,64 I tanks, of which the last 841 were equipped with HVSS suspension.
