Introduction The below process outlines the steps to follow to install a Nokia 6310 to the Windows XP operating system using Infrared to connect between phone and PC and then creating a new Dial-up Networking connection to the Internet using Optus 'Wireless Internet' via GPRS.

Setting up the handset

Press the Menu softkey. Scroll down to Settings and press the Select softkey. Scroll down to GPRS modem settings and press Select. Scroll down to Edit active access point and press Select. Rename the Alias for access point to Internet and press the OK softkey. Scroll down to GPRS access point and press the Edit softkey Enter internet and press the OK Press the red hangup button to return to the main screen of the phone

Installing the modem

It is recommended that you download the Modem Setup Program from www.forum.nokia.com to install the modem, however it is possible to set up manually by following the below steps On the PC, click on START, and then Control Panel (Switch to Classic View if you have not already done so) Open Phone and Modem Options and click on the Modems tab Activate the IR on the handset by pressing Menu 9 and align it with the IR port on the computer Windows will now detect and automatically install the device, advising you that it is ready for use. You will notice in the modem category that there is an additional modem installed Standard Modem over IR link that should be attached to a virtual COM port -eg COM7

Configuring your Modem

Highlight the new modem and click on Properties Select the Modem tab and set the Maximum Port Speed to 57600 and press OK and OK again to exit Phone and Modem Options and return to Control Panel

Creating a New Dial-up Networking Connection

Open Network Connections and select Create a new connection from the panel on the left-hand side Click Next and select Connect to the Internet followed by Next Select Set up my connection manually and click Next Select Connect using a dial-up modem and click Next Maintaining that the handset is still connected to the computer via IR, select the newly installed modem using the tick box to the left and de-select any other modems that may be selected. (You may need to re-establish the infrared connection) Click Next Enter a name for this connection. You may wish to call it OPTUSGPRS. Click Next Enter *99# as the phone number. Click Next User name and Password are to be left blank. Uncheck all tickboxes. Click Next. Click Finish The dial-up box will now appear. Click Properties Highlight the selected modem and click Configure Set the speed to 57600. Ensure that only Enable hardware flow control is checked. Press OK Select the Networking tab. Highlight Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and click Properties

Select Use the following DNS server addresses. For Preferred DNS server enter 202.139.124.225 and for Alternate DNS server enter 202.139.124.225. Press OK and OK again to return to the dialup screen Click Dial to connect You will now establish a connection to 'Wireless Internet'
