The Canadian National Baptist Convention (formerly Canadian Southern Baptist Convention) is in the process of starting a church in the Nicola Valley. Pastor of this new church is Brad Miller, who may be familiar to some, as he and his wife Anita have lived in Merritt in the past when Brad was responsible for the Ambulance Service. They left several years ago, headed off to the Chilcotin to work in ministry with the ranching community while Brad managed a cow/calf cattle operation. From there the couple moved to Williams Lake to Pastor a church, and most recently they spent 2 years looking after Camp Tulahead near Princeton. Now returned to Merritt to start this new church, they are looking to reconnect with others. New church in town

A 26-year old Merritt resident is facing charges of impaired driving, refusing a breathalyzer, flight from a police officer, firearms and drugs charges after a short pursuit on Friday night. On January 27, 10:30pm, Merritt RCMP attempted to stop a vehicle on Pooley Ave., for a traffic check. The vehicle was followed up Hamilton Hill on Hwy 97C, showing signs of impairment. Although emergency lights and sirens were activated, the vehicle refused to stop, and turned off at the Princeton cutoff side road. Vehicle tracks were followed through to the Chutter Ranch near Hwy 5A and through Nicola Ranch, where the vehicle was located, abandoned on a private road near the underpass of the Coquihalla Hwy. Other members were called in to assist, and recognizing the vehicle and its owner, were able to follow footprints and apprehend the owner on foot on Gillis Ave. Police Dog Services were also called to assist and were able to locate a track from the arrest scene to the abandoned vehicle. The driver, a 26-year old Merritt man, was arrested and charged. A search of the vehicle resulted in 2 firearms registered to the suspect, and a search of the suspect himself resulted in a small quantity of marijuana. He is scheduled to appear in court April 10th.
