Exercise referral scheme hits 3,000

THREE thousand people have been referred to Pembrokeshires exercise referral scheme since it was set up in April 2008. Under the scheme health professionals refer people to rehabilitate through exercise at Pembrokeshire leisure centres. Individuals of all ages can be referred for various conditions ranging from osteoporosis, mental health/mild anxiety, weight management, diabetes and inactive/sedentary lifestyles. To date 44 referral routes have been created with more than 216 health professionals including dieticians, doctors and physiotherapists regularly using the scheme. The scheme is delivered by six part time exercise professionals at all six of the countys leisure centres Haverfordwest. Fishguard, Crymych, Milford Haven, Pembroke and Tenby. The scheme aims to improve health and help and prevent chronic conditions through regular exercise, said Councillor Rob Lewis, cabinet member for sport and leisure. We aim to continue to increase the service available and increase opportunities for people to access high quality supervised exercise programmes. Joanna Waite, who took part in the exercise referral scheme at Haverfordwest Leisure Centre said she was delighted with the benefits gained from taking part. As a result of increased fitness, I have been able to take part in the 2010 Pembrokeshire coast path walk. My aim now is to maintain my fitness levels with the help and support of the exercise professionals and instructors at the leisure centres. Melvina Fantham, who also attends classes at Haverfordwest Leisure Centre, said she had been plagued with back problem over the past two years but attending referral classes had changed her whole lifestyle as well as reduced the pain. I am looking forward to the rest of the programme. I may not be the next Olympian but I am sure that if I keep exercising my life will continue to improve.
