Data Network Design Project Arnaud Tincelin Leticia Escanciano EECS X490 (3) Phase I Logical Design

Needs Analysis Goals Primary Goals: - Increase network performance by replacing old equipment with high performance one, providing better capacity in the switches and replacing wired structure with high speed cables. In order to meet this, a preliminary idea is to build the core and distribution layers with optical fiber and use for the LANs UTP Cat 5e (1000Base-T) - Security: Provide secure VPN connection and secure access to the servers - VPN connection to increase employee productivity. Secondary Goal - High capacity to anticipate further expansions. Geographical scope Access Layer: one LAN for each company department and one WLAN per floor in the office building, one LAN and one WLAN on the plant. LOGISTICS FINANCE HR MARKETING ENGINEERING CS (Client Services) SERVER WLAN1 WLAN2 WLAN3 WLAN0 (Plant) WAREHOUSE Distribution Layer: link all the LANs and WLANs within the building BUILDING_BACKBONE Core Layer: connect both backbones and provide access to the Internet CORE_BACKBONE

Logical design After studying carefully the background of the company, floor plans and after several meetings with the client, our team has decided that the logical design would be as follow: We have decided to use 1 switch per floor and some Wi-Fi spots to cover all the building and plant:

Mandatory applications: y Email y File transfer, sharing and access y Database access & updating y Web browsing Wish List (for the future expansion) y VoIP y Video Conferencing With our eyes in the future expansion, LANs will be design as high traffic LANs because in this areas is were the videoconferencing areas are. All the LANs in the office building will be connected to a Building Backbone and this in turn to the Core Backbone. In order to achieve the goal Increase employee productivity a VPN will be establish as shown in the diagram. Thanks to the VPN, the employees working away will be able to access the company network in a high speed and secure way.
