Excuses for good uses

Saving the world from insincere apologizers, one superbad excuse at a time
CHICAGO, Ill. We often think of lawyers as liars, however, this trial lawyer is using his alter ego, Excuseman, to rid the world of insincere apologies everywhere. In his second installment, Excuseman Only Tortures English, Jordan Margolis offers a satirical, humorous read about his screwball superhero, a childrens-book-slash-romance-novel and Jordys new client, former President Bush. The book is written through text message transcript, blog posts and excusepons to offer to offended parties that also comment on the United States today. Excuses pour out routinely in our daily news, politics and pop culture, says Margolis. The satire attempts to correct insincere apologies by providing absurdly humorous excuses for bad behavior. This book offers readers a chance to laugh at themselves, or someone else, to combat feelings of boredom with todays society. Fans of Excuseman can find more excusepons and videos about Jordy and his alter ego at www.excuseman.com. Love in the hospital

Long-time nurse writes steamy hospital romance
ONTARIO Judith Andrade, a nurse of 45 years and an ordained minister, knows about hospital life and love. Andrades book, Suspect, Love, follows Rosanna, a driven and passionate nurse just like any of the other 14 million health care professionals in Canada and the United States today. In the blink of an eye she is taken from an unexpected weekend tryst with a doctor, into a body of accusers investigating his alleged research fraud. Rosanna is torn between her growing feelings for the doctor, the professional promotion she has been working toward and pressure from her traditional Italian family that wants her to marry a man with a similar cultural upbringing. Andrades extensive nursing background fills the book with a realistic perspective, perfectly relatable for those working in the health care industry. Additionally, her experience working in a community based ministry will resonate with those who value friendship, romance and family. This book is a testament to love having the power to overcome difficult circumstances, whether between lovers or family, says Andrade. Lets Raise A Million...Lightbulbs! By Kara McIver Appears at http://www.care2.com/causes/trailblazers/blog/lets-raise-a-million-lightbulbs/ The Lets Raise A Million Project is another of the 2011 Echoing Green Semi-Finalists. This is a student-led, policy-supported, multi-community, urban ecological project that conducts complete energy efcient clean bulb retrots and energy audits, at no cost, for residents of modest means while informing residents of the economic and environmental benets of energy conservation. So what exactly does that mean? Lets raise a million is a university student run project. It was organized on the Morehouse campus and in 2009, Students from Agnes Scott, ClarkAtlanta, Emory, Georgia Tech, Georgia State, Morehouse, Spelman and Grambling went door to door in low income areas to discuss the benets of using Compact Fluorescent Light bubls (CFLs) instead of incandescent light bulbs and then installed all new light bulbs in the house for free. These CFLs often cost more, but are better for the environment and last longer than the traditional light bulbs. According to the Energy Star website, CFLs can save more than $40 in electricity costs over its lifetime, uses about 75 percent less energy than standard incandescent bulbs and lasts up to 10 times longer than incandescent light bulbs, and produces about 75 percent less heat, so it's safer to operate and can cut energy costs associated with home cooling. During the installation, residents are also information on other ways to reduce energy consumption, bills and carbon emissions. After 90 days, Lets Raise A Million volunteers followed up with the residents to determine savings over the adjustment period. Households eligible for the free lightbulbs are identied by municipal empowerment zone designations, publicly-subsided housing communities, any student utilizing any form of publicly-supported nancial aid, a member of a economically repressed community, determined by zip code, or any additional determinate identied by Lets Raise A Million. The project has already changed over 12,000 bulbs in Atlantas West End, over 1100 bulbs in Grambling, Louisiana, and almost 200 in Detroit, Michigan. The Lets Raise A Million project and its partners are committed to changing a million lightbulbs by 2013.

Googles New Privacy Policy: Why You Should Care "There are certainly reasons to be concerned about keeping all of your eggs in one basket, said Brent Rose of Gizmodo. It means there's a single point of failure." Was Mr. Rose talking about nuclear power plant fail-safes or weapons of mass destruction? No, he was talking about Googles new privacy policy. Starting March 1, Google will implement a policy that will track you across any Google platforms including search, YouTube, Gmail, Chrome, Docs, Calendar and Wallet. This new mega-policy will be a combination of more than 70 different policies from all of their services. As a result of the change, whenever you sign into one of your Google accounts the search engine will treat you as a single user and collect your information into one database, where previously each application kept this information separately. This would also mean if you accessed a Google product via cell phone, your phone number would become connected your Google account. According toGoogle's blog postannouncing the change, youll experience "a simpler, more intuitive Google experience." Because much of this information was already being collected by Google, this may not seem like a privacy issue. However, the information will now be grouped, without much user control over what is private and what youre comfortable sharing. Some users might be happy having only one policy to agree to but others may think the consolidated policy contradicts Googles previous dont-be-evil motto. The concerning part is that Google does not appear to have an opt-out option for the new way your data will be handled. Instead, if you have a Google account, your data will be gathered to deliver these new services to you -- whether you like it or not. "The lack of opt-out means users cannot pick and choose which data they want integrated into their Google proles, said Senator Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut, who serves on the Senate Subcommittee on Privacy, Technology and the Law. Private e-mail messages might contain any number of personal, embarrassing, or otherwise damaging information, and Googles attempts to amplify and contextualize this information...could have negative consequences for users." This means that something you write in an email could be scanned and then contextually applied to your search results or ads, or your calendar events could be compared to your current location for a helpful reminder. If you're concerned aboutthe new privacy policy, you can edit your settings in the Dashboard or disable cookies, but even Google admits that some of their services wont work without cookies. Blumenthal is not the only member of Congress to voice concern over privacy issues, and with SOPA still clearly in our rearview mirrors, can we allow one company to decide when it is reasonably necessary to violate our privacy?

Business Review Seminar- Marketing Plan Target Audience A decision needs to be made whether the marketing should target mostly current clients or try to reach business owners in the area that are not currently clients in some capacity. We have discussed the cyclical work pattern that Find8 currently experiences and this seminar could help to level out work across quarters, either through new or existing clients. I believe the determining factor is at the busiest point of work, are you too busy to take on more clients. If so, reaching out to current clients would seem to be the best option because you could plan and hold the seminar during a lull in business to draw your current clients back to company and increase their business, which would then hopefully increase commissioned projects throughout the year without overwhelming current project loads. If Find8 is prepared to have a heavier workload during the busiest times, I believe we should target new business. This would hopefully combat the cyclical nature of work by sheer volume of new commissioned work. Through partnerships with local business development ofces and groups, we could tap in to their contact lists and a wider range of local businesses. Indiana Small Business Development Center puts Lafayette in the Hoosier Heartland division of the state. The HHSBDC serves the twelve counties that surround Find8s area which is an excellent area to pull from for seminar attendees. If the seminar goes well and the partnership is mutually benecial, we may be able to replicate the seminar in multiple divisions of the Indiana Small Business Development Center, generating business across the state. Another option to consider is holding the seminar for current clients and also offering it as a webinar. This webinar could be marketed and sold through a partner, which may also create new business contacts. Promotions & Advertising Depending on target audience, advertising and promotional will differ. If the focus is new business, advertisements could be placed in the Journal & Courier business section, the greater Lafayette Chamber of Commerce website and similar resources in the surrounding counties. Promotions for new clients could include a free local SEO consultation or SWOT analysis with suggestions to random registrants. This would also potentially generate more business. If the focus is current clients, the advertising should mostly be done through Constant Contact. Since we already have contact information for our clients and Constant Contact is free, it makes the most sense. Also, a blurb on the Find8 website and updates through the Find8 social media accounts. Because these are free outlets or already paid for, sticking to current clients may be a less expensive, but possibly less lucrative, option. Promotions for current clients could include a free month of hosting, a website update or a taste of one of the services they dont already use. Also, Find8 could offer free seminar registration to current clients who register with an interested non-client, because referrals always drive new business. Find8 may also be interested in advertising on local radio. WDHP-FM (95.7 FM) is one option. Because it reaches many of the surrounding counties that are included in the HHSBDC, it may

be benecial to hit those business owners in multiple ways. This stations audience is mostly composed of males 25-54. PR/Publicity First, a press release explaining search engine optimization and how online reviews affect local business would be sent to the Journal & Courier along with a media alert about the actual seminar requesting placement on the local event calendars. If there is no response, we could pitch multiple story angles including a preview piece to generate registrants or a follow-up piece to hopefully draw business owners that didnt attend the seminar to the Find8 website or blog and eventually in for a consultation. If Find8 decides to advertise with a local radio station, we may also want to pitch an interview with Karla on the topic of local search engine optimization and getting found, establishing her as an expert and hopefully driving business to the website and Find8 services. We would also use the company blog to promote the seminar through related posts and a call to action to register for the seminar. Also, partners could place the seminar on their event calendars, use guest blogs from Karla to generate buzz on their blogs and reach out to their contacts through email marketing or social media. With or without partnership, the event should be listed on the HHSBDC and ISBDC calendar of events. The Mission of Lafayette Business to Business is to promote and strengthen member businesses through an organized system of networking and the giving and receiving of business leads. With 46 local member businesses, this would be a good outlet to spread the word to Lafayette businesses that are not already clients and possibly offer a discount if a multitude of members sign up for the seminar. Association for Women Business Owners local chapter is a supportive network of women business owners dedicated to providing relationship building, mentoring, encouragement and resources. With 106 members, Karla included, this would be a good another great opportunity for word of mouth marketing to generate more registrants for the seminar, again with possible discounts for bulk registration. Partnerships One good partner might be the Greater Lafayette Chamber of Commerce; this could be a mutually benecial relationship if we target new or existing clients. If we are looking for new clients, we would then would have access to all of their members in the local area. If we are targeting existing clients, those in the Lafayette area may not necessarily be members of the Chamber of Commerce and they could possibly recruit them to join. Advertisements on their website and communication with members would likely target the perfect niche group in the area. They also are beginning to establish a Twitter presence which could be another way to advertise the seminar. The Hoosier Heartland Small Business Development Center is the specic division of the Indiana Small Business Development Center in which Find8 is located. The division includes the 11 surrounding counties and is dedicated to growing Indianas economy by providing

entrepreneurs with the education, information and tools to build and grow a successful business. They serve as ...a gateway to local and national business resources, a guide in focusing on key issues and developing viable action plans and a connection to networking, mentoring and training opportunities. Partnering with the HHSBDC could be a great opportunity to expand the contact and client base of Find8. A successful partnership with the HHSBDC could also lead to an expansion of the seminar into other divisions of the ISBDC across the state or dispersement in webinar form across the state. The Purdue Center for Regional Development is another partnering option that would be great no matter who we are targeting. They have space in the Burton Morgan Center for Entrepreneurship located in Discovery Park on the Purdue campus, which would be a great place to hold the business review seminar. The center includes a 72-seat lecture room, a presentation room and several conference and breakout rooms for use by park occupants.
