lesson plans

Guiding questions that will provide the framework for the lesson. (Respond to each question.) Who will you be teaching? (Identify student grade level as well as academic functioning level and specific needs of individual students) This lesson is for fourth grade students. 18 of the students are on grade level 2 of the students are classified as learning support students and will need additional support with this assignment

Who (if anybody) will assist with the presentation of this lesson, and what will their role be? The teacher will be the only person teaching this lesson.

What is the long range goal(s) that is tied to this lesson? The long range goal tied to this lesson is for students to be independent with the Excel program and be able to o o o o Create a graphic Input data Give correct title and labels Adjust the graph, if needed, using the tools in Excel

What is the specific learning objective(s) for this lesson? When given a set of data, the student will, using the Excel program, graph the data with 90% accuracy for three out four sets of data as measured by teacher created rubric What prerequisite skills/knowledge will students need to effectively access and participate in this lesson? The student will need to know computer basics such as how to use a keyboard and mouse. The student will have to understand the purpose of a graph as well as how we uses graphs to display data. The class surveys need to be completed. The student will have to be able to follow directions.

When within the stages of learning will this lesson be presented? (Is it a learning acquisition lesson, learning fluency lesson, learning maintenance lesson, or learning generalization lesson?) This lesson will be a first of many lessons in using Excel. This is a learning acquisition lesson, the students will be learning for the first time how to input data into excel to create a graph. When will this lesson be completed? (Will it be a one-day lesson or a multiple day lesson?) This lesson will be completed over multiple days.

Where should this lesson be presented to ensure maximum student access and participation? (computer lab, classroom, science lab) AND what materials will be needed? This lesson needs to be presented in a computer lab with teacher display capabilities. The student will each need their own individual computers with the Excel program on them The students will need a copy of the class surveys

Why are you planning to teach this lesson? Why must this information/skill be presented to the students? This lesson will help students to learn how we can use a computer program to help us display data we have acquired. By creating a graph, we can show the data in picture form Graphing is an important skills for students to have as they progress through school Graphing is a skill that the students may need for future employment or college. The PSSA assessment has many graphics on it. If students can understand how graphics are created they will have a better understanding of how to read them. How does this lesson relate to the PA Academic Standards? This lesson meets the following PA State Standards for 4th grade math o o M4.E.1.2.1: Graph data or complete a graph given the data (bar graph or pictograph grid is provided). M4.E.1.1.1: Describe, interpret and/or answer questions based on data shown in tables, charts, bar graphs or pictographs. How does this lesson relate to the previous lesson? How does this lesson relate to future lessons? This unit is on our solar system. This lesson is related to the unit Prior to this lesson the students have been learning about how to read graphics and how to create graphics using pencil and paper This lesson has students making graphics through another medium. Future lessons will having students independently creating their own graphics using the excel program Additional lessons can include students creating questions based on their graph.

How will you determine if students have met the lesson objective? (Think assessment) The assessment for the bar graph assignment will be complete through a teacher created rubric.

How should this lesson be presented to ensure maximum student access and participation? (lecture, whole group activities, small group activities, cooperative learning groups) This lesson should be presented whole group first. If possible the teacher should shut the students screens off while presenting. Once the lesson is completed whole group, the students can use the Screen-o-matic lesson to help them through the process The teacher should then walk around the room and support any student that needs help

Pennsylvania Academic Standard(s) addressed during this lesson: (Provide Standard number and statement) This lesson meets the following PA State Standards for 4th grade math o M4.E.1.2.1: Graph data or complete a graph given the data (bar graph or pictograph grid is provided).

M4.E.1.1.1: Describe, interpret and/or answer questions based on data shown in tables, charts, bar graphs or pictographs.

Lesson Objective(s) (Stated in observable and measurable terms) When given a set of data, the student will, using the Excel program, graph the data with 90% accuracy for three out four sets of data as measured by teacher created rubric Assessment Plan (What will be done to determine if lesson objectives have been met?) The assessment for the bar graph assignment will be complete through a teacher created rubric.

Materials: This lesson needs to be presented in a computer lab with teacher display capabilities. The student will each need their own individual computers with the Excel program on them The students will need a copy of the class surveys Screen-o-matic created lesson guide with Power Point

Inclusion Techniques for Students with Special Needs: After the whole group lesson, the teacher will allow the student to use the Screen-o-matic created lesson guide to go through the lesson again as well as the first place to look for help. During the time the teacher will support any students that need it Paper and pencil bar graphs will also be provided if a student is unable to use the computer

Enrichment Techniques: For those students that finish early, an additional set of data will be provided for the students to create a second graph with Lesson Differentiation (What modifications/accommodations will be made to ensure that ALL students have access to and are able to participate in the lesson): If the student has difficulty accessing the computer, a paper and pencil graph will be provided for them to use If the student has difficulty with the technology additional support will be provided such as a split keyboard or adaptive mouse If the student has difficulty creating a graph an alternate way will provide for them to display the data from the survey.

Lesson Presentation
Introduction/Motivational Activities/Anticipatory Set: Once seated in the computer lab, I will review the class surveys that we took on each students favorite planet I will ask the students how they want to display this data. Once a graph is mentioned I will tell the student that instead of making a boring old paper and pencil graph, we are going to use the computer to make a graph! Detailed Teaching Sequence: (Provide sufficient detail that would enable a substitute to effectively present this lesson. Bulleted statements are preferred) After telling the students they are going to make a graph, explain to them that they are going to use a program called Excel

Closure:

Explain that Excel is a program that creates graphs from the data that you give it. Tell the studetns that you are first going to show they the step by step process for using excel to create a graph. Once finished, they students will be able to start creating their own graph and use Screen-o-matic to help them if they get stuck. Follow the teacher create Power Point with the Screen-o-matic and guide students through the graph creation process.

Guided Practice/Independent Practice/Assessment Activities Once completed, open up the Screen-o-matic on the students computers and have them follow along as the lesson is presented again. After watching it for a second time, have the students start creating their Excel spreadsheet and graph During the time the teacher should be walking around and support students Observations should also be completed on which students are doing well and which students need additional support. The students finished product will be assessed using the teacher created rubric

If the students are not finished tell them they will have time another day to finish For those students that are finished, have them print out their work to review for later Explain to the students that this is just the first day of many that we will be working in the computer lab on creating graphs.
