Year in Review

Why?

The Centers mission is to create opportunities for all people to experience the visual and performing arts by presenting contemporary exhibitions, live performances, and education programs for youth and adults year round. On average, more than 50,000 people attend activities at our venues each year. The Center has been designated a Major Cultural Institution by the Broward County Cultural Division and is one of just eight cultural organizations out of 600 in the county to

Dear Supporters: This has been a landmark year for the Art and Culture Center of Hollywood, and were so thankful to those who have been part of our success. Through our contemporary exhibitions, family-friendly performances, and high-quality education programs for children and adults, the Center continues to provide a vital and necessary home for the creative imagination in our region. The Center was founded by City leaders in 1975, and incorporated as a private non-profit in 1978 to provide highquality arts programming in Hollywood. Our achievements in 2011, as reflected in this report, represent a resounding fulfillment of that vision. During the past year, the Center enhanced its status among arts institutions in South Florida with an historic gallery project for the exhibition Artist Unknown/The Free World, and two new programming initiatives the Hot Topics Discussion Series and Creative Connection. These successes come as a result of a community believing in what we do. This includes the support of public and privatesector funders, hundreds of volunteers, and the tens of thousands of people who attend activities at our venues. The Center believes that the arts are not an extracurricular activity, but rather are essential to personal enrichment and the quality of life in a community as diverse and vibrant as ours. We are committed to building on our success and we look forward to seeing you in the coming year.

In the Gallery
The Art and Culture Center of Hollywood achieved three major milestones in its exhibition programming in 2011. For the first time, the Center was the host site for the South Florida Cultural Consortium Exhibition. We also received a FAB! Knight New Work Award for the exhibition and accompanying 260-page book Artist Unknown/The Free World, and launched the new Hot Topics Discussion Series, which is funded by an Arts Challenge Grant from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation. The year consisted of the following exhibitions:

Education Programs
In 2011, more than 3,000 youth ages 6 to 18 participated in the Centers visual and performing arts education programs. These programs were open to all children, regardless of ability level or socioeconomic status. They were designed to create enriching, high-quality experiences for children. In this way, we instilled a life-long appreciation for how the arts can transform individuals and communities. The programs included: _________________________________________________________
Summer Arts Camp 2011 243 youth enrolled from 15 South Florida municipalities, including in Miami-Dade, for 15 sessions in the visual and performing arts. Approximately 85% of camp enrollments were based on word of mouth or were returnees from the previous year. This reflects the high satisfaction with the 10-week program. Integrated Arts Distance Learning During the 2010-11 school year, a total of 1,783 students and 111 educators in Broward County Public Schools participated in 32 live broadcasts delivered via our partnership with the Broward Education Communications Network (BECON). Funding from the A.D. Henderson Foundation enabled the Center to present arts instruction from Florida Youth Orchestra and the Bonnet House Museum and Gardens. Student Gallery Monthly exhibitions by students from South Broward High School, Michael M. Krop High, Parkway Middle, Pembroke Pines Charter Elementary and Pine Crest Preparatory. Also included was the Centers Adult Class Annual Exhibition and Summer Arts Camp programs for Young Artists and Young Artists Advanced. Hochberg Preparatory Rousso Musical Theatre Program The 20-week after-school partnership program for Hochberg Preparatory students in grades 1 to 8 concluded with a performance of Disneys Jungle Book, Kids at the 500-seat Hollywood Central Performing Arts Center. ____________________________________________________________________

Summer Arts Camp Scholarships

In 2011, the Center awarded 34 full/ reduced tuition waivers to qualifying youth from low-income households so they could attend Summer Arts Camp. This equated to $12,837 in financial aid. These scholarships were made possible by Fundacion Sanjuan and the Florida Theatrical Association. We received many heartfelt and touching thank-you letters from children and caregivers who benefitted from these funds. Here is an excerpt from one letter we received from a girl who participated in our Broadway Actors summer camp. I read the [summer camp] brochure and I wanted to go so bad. But, considering the fact that my mother had gotten sick, I said goodbye to that dream. Then I was told about the scholarship program, and I pitched the idea to my mom and she said, Why not? Its worth a shot. My mother stopped me while I was preparing for another performance for my school and said to me, I got a call from the Art and Culture Center. I instantly thought, I didnt get it. But she continued, You got it. Those were the three most amazing words I had heard since my little cousin was born. Words cant express how grateful and ecstatic I am.

New Programs
In 2011, the Center introduced the following education programs: Visual Arts Studio After-School (for grades 2-8 and homeschool students); Drumluv West African Drumming and Dance; Private Voice, Piano, Guitar instruction; Figure Drawing; and Downtown Drawing.

Children and Adult Programs The Art and Culture Center also presents high-quality arts instruction for children and adults in media such as drawing, painting, clay, and private music instruction. These classes encourage creative expression and promote the life-long inspiration art brings to all ages.

Performing Arts
The Family Performance Series was presented at the 500-seat Hollywood Central Performing Arts Center and Boulevard Heights Community Center (West Hollywood). Each performance included an interactive portion for youth. Attendance for eight performances was 2,347. Performances consisted of the following: _________________________________________________________

Facility Rentals The 500-seat Hollywood Central Performing Arts Center is utilized by outside organizations as a rental facility for performing arts events and community gatherings. Since October 2010, more than 27,000 people have attended activities presented by outside organizations at the Performing Arts Center. This space is also utilized by the City of Hollywood and the School Board of Broward County. In addition to the theater, the Center makes its historic, circa 1924 Main Gallery facility and adjacent Arts School available for rent. With three different venues to choose from, each with its respective advantages and capabilities, Art and Culture Center management works with clients to determine the ideal venue for their events. To learn more, call 954.921.3439, ext. 225, or visit ArtAndCultureCenter.org/theater.

Ethan Bortnicks family-friendly shows at the Hollywood Central Performing Arts Center concluded a 21-city national tour. He is the youngest performer to headline his own national tour.

What a spectacular day we had performing with Ethan Bortnick! In all my years of teaching I have never had so much fun, nor been so impressed by someone so young.

Individual memberships begin at $50 and family memberships at $75. These memberships provide savings and discounts on Center programs and make members part of a vibrant cultural community. For even greater benefits and community impact, memberships are also available at the following levels: $150 Friend, $250 Fellow, $500 Patron, and $1,000 Benefactor, as well as corporate memberships. Discount memberships are available at $30 for full-time students, teachers, and working artists. Volunteers The Art and Culture Center of Hollywood would not be the successful organization it is without the support of hundreds of volunteers each year. Volunteers donate their time and talent to assist with staging special events, marketing the Center in the community, and even making and contributing original art for special event fund-raisers. In the 2010-11 fiscal year, a total of 431 volunteers donated 4,960 hours to the Center. Volunteer opportunities are available year-round. Creative Connection Creative Connection invites retired and soon-to-retire individuals to be part of arts activities and projects that have a positive impact on health and wellness, youth education, and personal enrichment. This new program was launched in 2011 through a grant from the Community Foundation of Browards Re-engage for Good initiative. The Creative Connection Arts Group meets regularly to create and discuss art; engage in arts-related activities in the community; and volunteer at Center events. Teen and Parent Ambassadors Program The Teen Ambassadors Program provides youth with hands-on experiences in program delivery in the visual and performing arts under the supervision of the Centers Education Department. The Parent Ambassador program allows parents to become involved in community outreach efforts at the Center. Parents work collaboratively with the Education Department staff to raise awareness about the impact of arts education on youth and families while encouraging involvement in the Centers visual and performing arts programs.

Support
The Art and Culture Center of Hollywood is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization supported in part by its members, paid admissions, private donors and foundations, and the following public entities: the City of Hollywood; the Broward County Board of County Commissioners as recommended by the Broward Cultural Council; and the State of Florida, Department of State, Division of Cultural Affairs, the Florida Council on Arts and Culture. We cherish this invaluable support and work diligently to meet the high expectations we have set with our programs. _________________________________________________________
Special Events Among the many ways the Center raises funds is through special annual events, such as the Hot Hollywood Glam Fall Fund-raiser, the Abracadabra Exhibition and Fund-raising Raffle, Golf for Art, and Cuisine for Art. In May 2011, we honored Gloria and Emilio Estefan for their contributions to the arts at the 14th Annual Cuisine for Art held at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino. Gloria Estefan accepted the award at an event in which elected officials and private sector leaders in Hollywood and Broward County served as waiters. The Florida Grand Opera brought the crowd to its feet when three singers dressed as waiters performed O Sole Mio and Thats Amore. Sponsorships and Donations Contributors to the Art and Culture Center of Hollywood support our mission to make the arts accessible to everyone in our community. Businesses, foundations, and individuals provide support by sponsoring exhibitions, education programs and performances. Sponsorship dollars are also raised at these special fund-raising events: Hot Hollywood Glam, our annual fall fund-raising party Cuisine for Art, in which elected officials and community leaders serve as waiters Golf for Art, in which sports and art combine for a fun day on the links

Contributed Services Fund-raising Events Contract Services Grants

Rising to the Challenge The Center is able to present its high-quality initiatives due to the generosity of private donors. In December 2011, these individuals rose to meet the Matching Gift Challenge in which an anonymous donor pledged to match all donations up to $10,000. Thanks to this anonymous donor and the matching contributions we received, the Center raised $11,005. These dollars will support our Arts Education Scholarship Fund, which assures that youth from all financial backgrounds can participate in fee-based programs such as Summer Arts Camp and Visual Arts Studio After-School.
