PART 1-B (Main Ideas) You are going to read a web page article in which two Namibian teachers visit some British schools. Read statements 1 5 and decide if they are TRUE (T) or FALSE (F) and justify your answer, as in the example. We come from a remote part of southern Namibia, where we live in a semi-desert. We come from a small village with more or less 600 people. We have a small primary school, grade one up to grade seven, with five teachers. There are approximately 140 kids. Most people in the village are unemployed. They survive through farming. They may own about 15 goats or, if they are fortunate, 200 goats. The socio-economic life in our village is not so good. And this influences the teaching and learning process. (...) In the morning most schoolchildren dont have any breakfast. Some do, but most come to school on an empty stomach. A government programme, called the National Schools Feeding Programme, provides the kids with one meal a day, but its usually just porridge (). For most of the students this is the only meal of the day. () They walk to school, even though some live very far away. And in the afternoon they have to walk back home. The school day starts at 7 am, and then they leave at 1 pm. They sometimes have extracurricular activities, like sports, and on some days they learn traditional life skills, where the parent community teaches them how to do needlework, and working with beads and wires. (...) Coming to school is a pleasure for the children (). Maybe its because of their lifestyles at home: always having to do household chores. Its nicer to be in another type of atmosphere. Also, the prospect of one meal a day attracts them. My first impressions, coming to see the International School in Britain, were that these children have an easy life. Easy in terms of the time they start school and the many meals they get.
