RoMance, bromance, familial love, puppy love ... Crazy Stupid Love (CSL) has it all. But surprise, surprise, it has none of the smarm or raunch one would expect from the recent deluge of by-the-numbers comedies that Hollywood readily churns out. The premise isnt groundbreaking: a middle-aged mans (Steve carrell) high-school sweetheart wife (Julianne Moore) suddenly asks for a divorce after admitting to an affair with her co-worker (Kevin Bacon). So whats a man to do? Take lessons from ultra slick lady-killer (Ryan Gosling), who actually has
a genuine heart lurking beneath his wayward cynicism. Throw in a 13-year-old boy (Jonah Bobo) crushing on his babysitter (analeigh Tipton), who in turn is crushing on his father; a cute lawyer (emma Stone) who just might be the girl for the flirtatious lothario; and a bar fling (Marissa Tomei), and you have the typical multi-generational ensemble comedy for the times. But what CSL has that stands out from the rest is heart, Dan Fogelmans smart script and a wickedly strong cast that knows how to milk what theyve been given for all its worth. co-directors Glenn Ficarra and John Requa (who gave us I Love You Phillip Morris and wrote Bad Santa) smartly let the sensational a-list ensemble drive the movie, giving them free rein to turn what could potentially be schmaltz to a surprisingly touching movie. carrells everyman cal is
likable as the actor flexes his comedic potential by playing it straight and making him innately relatable. Moore is her usual pitchperfect nuanced self, while Tomei offers an over-the-top laugh. But it is Gosling and his wonderful abs that shine, especially when hes bromancing carrell. He hams it up by parodying his lothario role, showing off his ability to play outside his usual serious dramatic roles. Stone matches him scene for scene, cementing her status as the white-hot starlet to watch. Sure, the film sometimes awkwardly switches gears as it veers from pathos to comedy, trying to navigate through the respective emotional dilemmas. and the ending, too, may feel a little too contrived, with twists and turns spotted easily a mile away. But youre sold when the tangled storyline are expertly executed via heartfelt performances, making you fall crazy stupid in love with movie characters with understandably complicated real-people emotions. This movie isnt the perfect rom-com, but its more than good enough to be entirely lovable. especially with a Dirty Dancing homage every girl is sure to want to try.
even with only a portion of their plan. The script is crammed with laughout-loud moments of absurdity and low-grade idiocy, shot in the hand-held mockumentary style familiar to fans of TVs The Office to further amplify the satirical stand its taking. By the time we get near the end, we soon realise that were walking the very thin and unsettling line between comedy and chaos. Its a daring concept and strangely effective. Though hilarious, we know in reality, these characters are no laughing matter. Morris is deliberately provoking his audience with these conflicting emotions, making us think after the laughter has died down. There is a universal human fragility, and the joke is on all of us.
