Indication and Contraindication INDICATION: Intestinal amebiasis, refractory trichomoniasis, bacterial infection, bacterial vaginosis, and to prevent post partum infection in contaminated colorectal surgery CONTRAINDICATION: Contraindicated in patients hypersensitive to drug and other nitroimidazole derivatives. Use cautiously in patients with history of blood dyscasia or CNS disorder and in those with retinal or visual changes. Use cautiously in patient with hepatic disease. Nursing Responsibilities Observe 10Rs in giving medication Observe patient with edema, especially if receiving corticosteroids; it may cause sodium retention. Record number and character of stools when drug is used to treat amebiasis. Instruct patient in proper hygiene Tell patient he may experience a metallic taste and have dark or redbrown urine. Tell patient to report symptoms or candidal overgrowth. Tell patient to report any neurological symptoms such as seizures and peripheral neuropathy
