Introduction
This quick start guide provides you with basic installation and operation
instructions. Please review the GE 31591 Users Guide to learn more about the
features and functions of the GE 31591 including:
- Skype credit
- Online number
- Skype and landline voicemail
- Call forwarding

Your telephone contains the following items. Save your sales receipt and
original packaging in the event warranty service is necessary.

Installing the base unit
1. Plug the Ethernet cable into the base unit and to a LAN port on your
broadband modem or router.
2. Plug the telephone line cord into the base unit and a telephone modular
jack.
3. Plug the power adapter into the base unit and an electrical outlet not
controlled by a wall switch.
Note that there is a power cord catch at the back of the base unit on the right
side of the power adapter jack.

4. Plug the charger into an electrical outlet not controlled
by a wall switch. Place the handset onto the charger as
shown. An animated battery icon will display after a few
minutes to show that the handset battery is successfully
being charged. For optimum performance, please allow
the bottery to chorge or l6 hours beore nrst use.
CAUTION:
1. Use only the supplied rechargeable battery or equivalent replacement battery (see
bottery spec|ncot|ons |n the sect|on 'Techn|co| spec|ncot|on on page 84 of the GE
31591 Users Guide). Visit our website at www.gephones.com to nnd out how to order o
replacement battery.
2. If the handset will not be used for an extended period of time, unplug the battery
and remove it from the handset to prevent possible leakage.

Using softkeys
Press the softkeys below the labels on the display screen to access the menu
and other features.
Setting the language and country
After you have installed the handset battery, select the
desired language and country for use.
1. Use / to highlight your desired language (English,
Espaol, or Franais), and then press the Select softkey.
2. Use / to highlight your desired country (USA or
Canada), and then press the Select softkey.
3. The screen d|sp|oys 'Connecting for a few seconds, then
the screen d|sp|oys 'Successful. Press the OK softkey.
Getting started with Skype

IMPORTANT: Skype does not allow emergency calls. Such calls are always
routed to the landline connection. Therefore, you should not rely on Skype for
emergency services. Alternative arrangements should be made.

Signing into Skype
1. Press the Sign In softkey. You see two options:
Sign in to Skype - sign in to Skype using an existing Skype
account.
Create new account - sign in to Skype by creating a new
$kype occount. $ee the sect|on 'Creot|ng o new $kype
account on page 15 of the GE 31591 Users Guide for
instructions on creating a new account.
2. Sign in to Skype is highlighted. Press the Select softkey
and the Sign In screen will appear.
3. l you ore us|ng your $kype occount or the nrst t|me on
this phone, press / to select <new user>, then press
the OK softkey. Enter a Skype User name, and press the
OK softkey.
-OR-
If you have previously signed in to your Skype account
with this phone, press / to select the desired user
name (our example shows users smith_00001 and
smith_00002), then press the OK softkey.
4. Enter your Skype password, and then press the OK
softkey.
5. The messoge 'Save your name and password for auto reconnect?
appears. Press the Yes softkey to automatically reconnect the next time you
want to sign in. Press the No softkey if you do not want to automatically
reconnect.
6. The screen d|sp|oys 'Signing in <user name> for a few seconds, then the
screen d|sp|oys 'Successful. Press the OK softkey.
7. The phone signs into Skype automatically using your Skype account.

The following table describes the 4 Skype status icons that can display on the
handset screen after you have successfully signed in to your Skype account.

Main Menu
The main menu provides easy access to all of your Skype phone settings.
To access the main menu, press the Menu softkey.
Press / redial or / to navigate and highlight an item.
The following table outlines the main menu items:
Contacts
Your contact list and the current Skype status of your
contacts.
Call History
All your calls (All events), missed calls, incoming and
outgoing calls, voicemails and exchange contact
details.
Skype Status
Choose to switch Skype user, show online status,
chonge your pron|e, chonge your possword, ond s|gn
out.
Add Contact
Add a Skype user or SkypeOut number to your contact
list or Phonebook.
Settings
Settings for phone, sounds, display, regular calls,
Skype calls, time and date, network, and advanced
settings.
Making a Skype call from contacts
A Skype call refers to a call from one Skype ID to another Skype ID. It is a free
serv|ce oered by $kype ond does not |nvo|ve ony octuo| phone numbers.
To make a Skype ID call:
1. Press the Menu softkey.
2. Press / redial or / to select Contacts, and then press the Select
softkey.
-OR-
Press while in idle mode.
3. Press / to select the desired online contact, and then press the
Options softkey.
4. Press / to select Call, and then press the Select softkey.
NOTE: If you have selected a SkypeOut contact, the only choice available is a SkypeOut call.
5. Wait for the call to connect, ring, and be answered.
6. If you want to hold the call during the conversation, press the Hold softkey.
Press the Resume softkey to resume conversation.
7. If you want to end the call, press the End softkey.
Making a regular call
To make a regular (landline) call, press

and dial the phone number desired.
You can also use the speakerphone feature to make a call. Press and then
dial the phone number.
Answering a call
When the phone rings, press the Answer softkey or
flash
to answer the call.
Press the Reject softkey or to decline (you can only reject Skype calls).
Missed calls
vhen o $kype l0 or $kype ln co|| |s m|ssed, your phone d|sp|oys 'You have X
new missed calls where X is the number of missed call you have received.
To view missed calls:
1. Press the View softkey to see the history of missed calls.
2. Select the desired call entry.
3. Press the Options softkey to take further actions (Call, Add to contacts,
Details, Delete, or Delete all).

answer a call using the
speakerphone.
Mute
- Press to mute the
microphone. Press again to
resume conversation.

Down/Contact List
- Press to review the
contact list when the
telephone is not in use.

decrease the volume.
Right Softkey
- Press to select the
function displayed on the
handset screen directly
above it.
End
- Press to end a call.
- During an operation,
press to cancel and
exit without making
changes.
Skype
- Press to access the Skype
status menu.
- Press to connrm se|ect|on
during menu operation.
redial Right/Redial
- While in menu, press to
scroll right.
- Press to review previously
dialed numbers.
