Fire department
budget up for vote
By MELISSA DIPENTO
The Voorhees Sun
On Feb. 18, residents will have
the opportunity to vote on the
Voorhees Fire Department budg-
et.
Residents will approve or deny
the departments $7,466,965 budg-
et, as well as elect two members to
fire commissioner seats. The 2012
budget is under the 2 percent
state-mandated cap.
The budget, Fire Chief Jim
Pacifico said, was a decrease from
last years nearly $7.5 million
budget.
Residents will also vote to fill
two vacant seats on the Board of
Fire Commissioners. Thomas
Hanney, incumbent Barbara
Silary, Kurtis Stroemel and
Vaughn Vandegrift are vying for
three-year seats.
There is no special question on
the ballot this year.
The election will be held on
Saturday, Feb. 18 from 2 to 9 p.m.
Residents from district 1, 4 and
12 will vote at the Ashland Pres-
byterian Church, 33 E. Evesham
Rd.
Residents from districts 2, 5
and 18 will vote at Voorhees Fire
Station #2, 2002 S. Burnt Mill Rd.
Promoting diversity
By MELISSA DIPENTO
The Voorhees Sun
Before moving to the United
States, Naseem Badat left Zambia
with her husband and three sons
for Long Island. A year had
passed, and the family then shuf-
fled to Cherry Hill, soon calling
Voorhees home for good in 1982.
Badat had worked as a pharma-
cist, but took up Islamic studies at
the university level once she relo-
cated to the United States.
Badat welcomed a daughter
later in life and said she was mo-
tivated to pass on what she
gleaned from her studies to her
own children.
She served as principal of the
Palmyra Mosque, working with
her colleagues to revamp the
schools curriculum.
Much of her time there was
spent encouraging students to
harness their communication
skills by developing a speech com-
petition, which challenged them
to speak publicly and take hold of
their leadership abilities.
She said the 11th- and 12th-
grade students would research
relevant and timely topics before
delivering a speech to peers.

In other fire news:
This time last year, the
Voorhees Planning Board ap-
proved plans for a new fire station
at the site of the existing station
at 2002 S. Burnt Mill Rd.
Last year, Pacifico said the new
station would be about 10,000
square-feet larger than the cur-
rent facilities.
Last month, the chief an-
nounced that the construction
phase had begun and permits
were being issued by the town-
ship to begin clearing and grad-
ing the site.

4 THE VOORHEES SUN FEBRUARY 8-14, 2012
One of the most fulfilling as-
pects of being the mayor of
Voorhees Township is having the
opportunity to witness and be a
part of so many wonderful caus-
es. Over the years, I have seen car-
ing citizens of our community
come together to build play-
grounds, care for shelter animals,
raise money to fight cancer and
so much more.
I am proud to announce the
Voorhees community is at it
again and will unite and rally on
Wednesday, Feb. 15, at 7 p.m. at the
Macys lobby of the Voorhees
Town Center to launch our first
Relay for Life season.
Dozens of families, caregivers,
cancer survivors, schools, local
organizations and individuals
will ring in the new season with a
rally that educates everyone on
how their involvement benefits
the American Cancer Societys
goal to save lives and create more
birthdays.
Money raised will fight cancer
by helping people stay well and
get well, by finding cures and by
fighting back.

in our opinion
R
ecent news that Atlantic City
casinos had a better December
2011 than December 2010 is, of
course, good to hear. Given the citys
long losing streak, any step in the
right direction, no matter the reason,
is cause to pat someone on the back.
But, a closer look at the numbers
shows that the city is not anywhere
close to being out of the woods.
The state Division of Gaming En-
forcement recently announced that
total casino win rose 4.2 percent last
December to $246.5 million. It was the
highest monthly percentage increase
since December 2006, officials said.
Thats great, except for the fact that,
first, in December 2010, Old Man Win-
ter already had settled in for what was
to be a brutal stay. Last December, the
weather was great. That, alone, proba-
bly helped the casinos quite a bit.
Oh, and the state also announced
that, for the year, casinos won $3.3 bil-
lion, which is down 6.9 percent from
2010.
But we really dont feel like raining
on ACs parade today. A win is a win is
a win, and well take it.
And there are other reasons for
hope:
The Revel is set to open this sum-
mer. No doubt it will generate a fair
amount of buzz that will attract visi-
tors and create thousands of jobs.
And, John Palmieri is the new exec-
utive director of the Casino Reinvest-
ment Development Authority. He has a
history of success in helping commu-
nities expand. If he can get the city,
the casinos and the various other enti-
ties on board in marketing the city as
a destination point for tourists, some-
thing really good could happen.
The state also is looking into online
gambling, which actually could help
casinos in the long run.
Atlantic City still has a long, diffi-
cult road to recovery. But Decembers
news was good, and there are other,
positive signs.
Maybe theres hope for the city after
all.
Small win is better than a loss
At this point, Atlantic City will cling to any scrap of good news
AC notches a win
There are a few reasons why
Decembers casino win numbers are
up. Not all point to a rapid recovery
for Atlantic City, but, at this point, a
win is a win.
Writer: Voorhees taxpayer
money not for the privileged
Mayor Mignogna began his recent col-
umn with the words: I was privileged ...
Notice the word privileged. Should he
change was to am?
It is not a problem for any private organ-
ization to honor anyone it chooses as the
Rotary Club did.
But, it does become a problem when
Voorhees taxpayers directly pay the fee for
those who think that they are privileged
to attend that privately created non-gov-
ernment function.
The Voorhees Township check register
of tax money spent (Check #24037 dated
Jan. 9) shows a payment of hundreds and
hundreds of Voorhees tax dollars paid for a
fancy meal for the privileged mayor and
his friends.
I understand that the taxpayers check
#24037 was not repaid with personal funds
from the privileged. We taxpayers paid it
all ... for the privileged.
Voorhees taxpayers were not eating
parmesan-crusted chicken or Chesapeake
crab cakes or prime rib on that January
night. The privileged mayor and friends
were.
Our mayor has also presented a 2012 mu-
nicipal budget that increases the amount of
Voorhees tax by $2,196,041 more (source:
Voorhees 2012 General Fund Budget Sum-
mary).
More taxes were forced to pay and an-
other new record high tax amount from
Mignogna that surpasses former record-
high tax while he's spending our taxes on
himself.
Did you read that higher and higher tax-
ing detail in his column?
You can learn much more about
Voorhees exploding taxes by reading Com-
mitteeman Freidmans recent column at
www.VoorheesSun.com.
After using election year tricks to keep
your record high taxes flat for his re-elec-
tion, its now prime rib for Mayor Mike and
beans/bread for us wholl be paying his
record-high Voorhees municipal taxes in
2012.
Mayor Mignogna, you are not privi-
leged.
Spend your own money on yourself, not
Voorhees taxpayers money.

The American Cancer Society
Relay for Life is an overnight
community celebration where in-
dividuals and teams camp out,
picnic, dance, play games and
take turns circling around a track
relay style to raise funds to
fight cancer.
The event opens as cancer sur-
vivors lead the way around the
track and are honored with the
Survivor Lap.
As the sun begins to set, the
warm glow of hundreds of lumi-
naria light the field in an emo-
tional silent ceremony. Each bag
lit is in honor of a loved one who
won the fight against cancer or in
remembrance of a special some-
one who lost their battle.
The American Cancer Society
Relay for Life represents hope in
that those lost to cancer will not
be forgotten, that those who face
cancer will be supported, and that
one day, cancer will be eliminat-
ed.
Started in 1985, Relay for Life
began with one man who circled
around a track for 24 hours rais-
ing $27,000. This year, Relay for
Life has grown to more than 5,000
communities and 25-plus coun-
tries worldwide.

students.
And then, on Sept. 11, 2001,
something happened that
changed the world as everyone
knew it.
Especially after 9/11, the de-
mand for churches and syna-
gogues they wanted to know
more about the culture and com-
munity, Badat said. Islam was
nothing as portrayed. I knew
there must be something done to
educate about the tension around
Islam.
Badat became more involved
with giving lectures to syna-
gogues and churches and hosting
interfaith dialogues to promote
peace and diversity.
Not violence, but peace. We
tried to convey that message,
Badat said.
Over the years, Badat has
strived to bridge relationships
among all members of her com-
munity.
We want to bring people clos-
er together and stand shoulder to
shoulder. (My work) is designed
to clear misconceptions about re-
ligion and our community, Badat
said. Muslim people came from a
variety of parts of the world
Pakistan, Egypt, Sudan and Saudi
Arabia. Were different, but we all
pray to the same God.
For her work in promoting di-
versity, Badat was recently hon-
ored by Camden County for her
community efforts.
Last month, Badat, along with
13 other county residents, were
awarded the Camden County
Freedom Medal during a ceremo-
ny at the Camden County Boat-
house.
The award was created in 2001,
and is presented to community
leaders who exhibit the ideals of
the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King
Jr.
This was a very special year
for the freedom medal because it
marks the 10th anniversary of
presenting these awards, said
Freeholder Director Louis Cap-
pelli Jr. I am constantly amazed
and humbled by the people who
dont seek the spotlight, but serve
their fellow residents so well and
so selflessly.
Badat said in her 20-plus years
of community service, she never
expected to be honored for her
work.
I never once thought someone
would recognize me. As a Mus-
lim, it is my duty to spread the
correct image of our community,
to breed love and affection for
everyone, Badat said. I was sur-
prised, but pleasantly surprised.

The Verizon Foundation has
awarded a $7,500 grant to
Bancroft, a leading service
provider for people with autism,
brain injuries and other intellec-
tual or developmental disabili-
ties.
The funds are designated to
provide educational technology
such as distance-learning pro-
grams for Bancrofts special-ed-
ucational programs, including
The Bancroft School in
Haddonfield and The Bancroft
School at Voorhees Pediatric Fa-
cility.
Education is a funding priori-
ty for Verizon, explained Jen-
nifer Young, Verizons external af-
fairs field director for South Jer-
sey. And technology can enable
students at all levels to get the
most out of their educational op-
portunities. Were very pleased to
help fund such opportunities at
Bancroft.
Noted Bancroft President Toni
Pergolin: This grant will make a
real difference in the lives of our
students. We greatly appreciate
Verizon for helping to bring the
world to our students through
technologies like distance learn-
ing.
In fact, during a ceremonial
check presentation in a Bancroft
classroom, Young observed a stu-
dent benefitting from an interac-
tive white board or Smartboard
which serves as a giant computer
screen on a classroom wall.
Even though the student
couldnt verbally respond, he
used a pointer to tap his answers
on the smart board, Young ob-
served And his teacher could see
he was following along with her
instruction.
Verizon awards $7,500 to Bancroft
