These assembly instructions explain how to assemble the take-up reel. Notice that the icons used in this document are also located on the printer packaging. The icons help you to locate the parts needed at each stage of the assembly.

1. Take-up Reel.

Prepare the printer


Steps 1 to 3. This task requires 1 person. x1

Close the paper bin. Make sure that the cloth of the bin is behind the lower cross-brace.

Turn off the printer by pressing the Power button on the front panel.

Turn the Power switch to the Off position at the rear of the printer.

Assemble the take-up reel


Steps 4 to 37. This task requires 1 person. Time required is 35 minutes.

Locate the bag of screws and the screwdriver that are included in the take-up reel box. x1

Identify the four holes on the inside of the right leg. The holes are used to attach the take-up reel motor.

Insert two screws into the two forward holes. Leave sufficient space between the screw heads and the leg to attach the take-up reel motor.

Attach the take-up reel motor to the two screws, and then pull the take-up reel motor down so that it rests securely on the screws.

Use two screws to attach the rear of the take-up reel motor to the stand, and then tighten all four screws.

Use the parallel plug to connect the take-up reel motor to the parallel port at the rear of the printer.

Identify the three holes on the inside of the left leg. The holes are used to attach the left side of the take-up reel assembly.

Insert two screws into the two forward holes. Leave sufficient space between the screw heads and the leg to attach the left side of the take-up reel assembly. x2

Attach the left side of the take-up reel assembly to the two screws, and then pull the take-up reel assembly down so that it rests securely on the screws.

Use one screw to attach the rear of the left side assembly, and then tighten all three screws.

Use four screws to attach the take-up reel deflector supports. The deflector supports can be found in the inner box of the take-up reel packaging. x4

Insert four clips into the cross-brace, and one clip on the printer leg, near the take-up reel motor.

Move the front right wheel so that it faces forward, and then lock the wheel. Slide the sensor unit onto the right foot, and then use the screw shown to attach the unit.

IMPORTANT
Move the printer to its final location.

Attach the sensor unit to the left side of the cross-brace.

Connect sensor cable to the rear of the take-up reel motor, and then connect the other end of the sensor cable to the sensor unit on the right foot.

Use the clips that you attached in step 15 to attach the sensor cable to the cross-brace and the right leg.

Remove the take-up reel deflector from the box.

Attach the take-up reel deflector by inserting the left side of the deflector into the left support, and then inserting the right side of the deflector into the right support.

Carefully lift the central core tube. The central core tube contains the take-up reel spindle.

Remove take-up reel spindle from the core.

Remove the black hub from the box, and then loosen the plastic nut.

Slide the black hub onto the spindle so that the screw on the spindle fits into the slot in the hub.

Tighten the plastic nut on the black hub.

Loosen the plastic nut on the blue hub.

Slide the blue hub onto the spindle. Tighten the plastic nut on the blue hub.

Unlock the take-up reel by pushing the spindle lever to its uppermost position.

Raise the take-up reel deflector to its upright position.

Install the take-up reel spindle into the printer by pushing firmly on each end of the spindle, and then lower the take-up reel deflector.

Turn the Power switch to the On position at the rear of the printer.

Turn the printer on by pressing the Power button.

Make sure that the cloth of the bin is behind the cross-brace so that it does not block the take-up reel sensors. The assembly of the take-up reel is now complete.

Attach the core adapters to the hubs if you are using paper rolls with 3-inch cores. Use a cardboard core when using the take-up reel and a paper roll that has a 3-inch core.

Load the take-up reel


Steps 38 to 52. This task requires 1 person. Time required is 5 minutes.

Paper should be loaded.

On the front panel, select the paper icon, and then select Take-up reel, then select Enable take-up reel.

Decide whether you want to load the take-up reel now or during printing; in this example it is loaded now.

Raise the take-up reel deflector to its upright position.

Unlock the take-up reel by pushing the spindle lever to its upper most position.

Remove the take-up reel spindle.

The front-panel display guides you through the process of loading the take-up reel spindle core onto the take-up reel spindle. When that task is complete, load the take-up reel spindle into the printer by pushing firmly on both ends of the spindle.

On the front panel, select a winding direction.

Press the OK button. The printer advances the paper. Make sure that the paper passes in front of the take-up reel deflector.

Use tape to secure the paper to the spindle core. Do not attempt to pull more paper out of the printer. To support the weight of the loop-shaping core, you might need to use more tape than is shown.

Lower the take-up reel deflector.

Press OK. The printer advances the paper.

Assemble the loop-shaping core. The front-panel display shows the required length of the loop-shaping core. Note: The loop-shaping core must be the same width as the paper that you are using.

Insert the loop-shaping core.

Use the wind-direction switch on the take-up reel motor to select the winding direction. Select 1 to wind the paper facing in. Select 2 to wind the paper facing out. Set the switch to match your choice in step 46.
