Not unlike the inhabitants of Huxley's "Brave New
World" being regularly dosed with soma to keep the
futuristic dystopia under control, partisan Republican
Attorney General Tom Corbett once again has
attempted to lull the Pennsylvania political
establishment into complacency with bogus
statements and wellplaced illegal grand jury leaks
regarding his supposed investigation of Republicans.
Corbett really wants everyone to believe he is
working hard at investigating Republicans,
particularly John Perzel. He paints a pretty picture
with trance inducing statements hinting that he will
arrest Republicans soon. Here is a quick timeline of
his Bonusgate soma dosages:
July – "Corbett says more arrests are expected. He
also said he is investigating Republicans" (Tribune
Review 7/13/08)
August – "[Corbett] said his office would go after any
lawbreaker, 'and if it's a Republican, it's going to
irritate me more…'" (Inquirer 8/3/08)
September – "Corbett said more arrests could be
made this month `if all the dominoes fall in the right
line.''' (Associated Press 9/9/08)
October "I could have charged two Republicans
and said, 'See, I did it,' Corbett said." (PolitickerPA
10/6/08)
November "'I would expect some additional
charges,' he told reporters at a news conference
about priorities for his second term. 'Yes, I believe
there will be charges.'" – Post Gazette 11/6/08
These ominous statements are made all the more
believable by equally hallucinogenic and welltimed
illegal grand jury leaks regarding Corbett's supposed
investigation of John Perzel:
"House Republicans see some caucus staff
subpoenaed" (Post Gazette 8/16/08)
"GOP paid more than $1 million for additional voter
data" (Tribune Review 9/10/08)
"Grand jury investigates use of House GOP
computer system" (Post Gazette 9/11/08)
"Grand jury investigating another House GOP
contract" (Post Gazette 11/15/08)
"Pa. probes database GOP used in House" (Inquirer
11/16/08)
Then, as Harrisburg skips along through its HR Puff
nStuffesq lala land, Corbett makes his real
intention to never indict any Republicans clear:
"Corbett said the public has not heard the last of
Bonusgate, but his office — as a policy — will make
no announcements about the probe between Oct. 1
and Election Day so as not to affect elections."
(Indiana Gazette 8/27/08)
"'Bonusgate' charges put off" (Post Gazette 9/26/08)
"'I wouldn't define [arrests of Republicans] as
imminent,' he said." (Patriot 11/6/08)
For nearly two years, no one has been sober enough
to shake you and the rest of Harrisburg from your
torpor and protect you from partisan Republican,
Alberto Gonzales clones like Tom Corbett, especially
your leader Bill DeWeese.
Tomorrow, you will be choosing a new leader and
Pennsylvania Democrats are hoping it won't be
perhaps one of the singularly greatest frauds ever
elected to the Pennsylvania General Assembly, both
a selfish, selfcentered human and rank coward.
Fortunately, it looks as if DeWeese is out of the
running.
That is the good news.
The bad news is that DeWeese's henchman and
protector, Bill Chadwick, is still skulking around the
Democratic caucus in an effort to continue to profit
from the Caucus leadership accounts.
Chadwick's multimillion dollar contract with the
caucus expires this month. (Herald Standard
11/4/07) You should make sure whoever you elect
leader make one of their first orders of business the
permanent termination of that contract.
Corbett battered many of you this year in what Todd
Eachus described as:
"A Bonusgate investigation conducted very unfairly
by Attorney General Tom Corbett, charging only
Democrats before the election, and letting the House
Republican Campaign Committee launch vicious,
unfair and untrue attacks, which sought to make our
members guilty by association," (Capitolwire 11/5/08)
DeWeese and Chadwick stood idly by as your
friends Vince Biancucci, Dan Surra and Chris King
were pummeled to defeat. Numerous others in your
caucus were attacked just as viciously and what
should have been an even larger majority was
curtailed.
While Chadwick was hired to ostensibly protect the
entire Democratic Caucus, his true colors were there
for all to see when things got the toughest for the
caucus:
"LaGrotta said DeWeese hired attorney William
Chadwick as a personnel manager when problems
in the House Democratic caucus emerged. 'When
he introduced himself to me, he said, 'I have no
attorneyclient privilege with you. I'm Bill DeWeese's
attorney.'" (New Castle News 7/11/08)
"'I reported directly to Bill DeWeese,' Chadwick said.
'I worked with (House lawyer) Bill Sloane.'' (Tribune
Review 12/19/07)
"Some of DeWeese's troops see Chadwick's job as
being DeWeese's taxpayerfunded lawyer. They're
griping about the notion that Chadwick is there to
save DeWeese's bacon and to serve up other
lawmakers or staffers to the attorney general's
investigators." (Tribune Review 6/29/08)
"Then, after spending months having his new
enforcer, Bill Chadwick, subtly sow fear in many
House Democrats of what DeWeese could tell
Attorney General Tom Corbett, the old DeWeese
snarled to the surface Monday." (Capitolwire 8/6/08)
"'Mike Manzo does not pose legal risks to Bill
DeWeese,' Chadwick said." (Inquirer 10/17/08)
So Chadwick can provide cover for DeWeese, but
where was he when Biancucci, Surra and King were
linked repeatedly by the HRCC to Mike Veon and the
Bonusgate scandal? Where were the headlines
proclaiming Corbett a corrupt prosecutor only
interested in helping his Republican contributors in
the House Republican caucus regain the majority?
This is what the millions the DeWeese controlled
House Democratic Caucus leadership accounts paid
to Chadwick got you:
"In our continuing cooperation with the attorney
general's investigation, we supplied substantial
evidence…" (Herald Standard 12/19/07)
"'We're assisting (the attorney general) in looking for
the needles in a haystack relevant to the
investigation,' [Chadwick] said." (Herald Standard
1/13/08)
"Chadwick estimated that he had culled through
'tens of millions' of electronic records, most of them
emails, to determine what to hand over to
prosecutors." (Inquirer 5/13/08)
"Chadwick said hiring the lawyers helped
prosecutors." (Herald Standard 8/31/08)
Even worse, Chadwick brought onto the House
Democratic legal team Walter Cohen, the former
Republican Attorney General and currently John
Perzel's attorney. (Inquirer 11/16/08)
"Former Acting Pennsylvania Attorney General
Walter Cohen of Obermayer has assisted Chadwick.
Chadwick Associates 'has recovered and is
searching millions of paper and electronic
documents to assist the Attorney General's Office in
identifying those relevant to the investigation,'
Andrews said." (Tribune Review 1/19/2008)
Are you comfortable with paying for legal advice
from a close, personal associate of John Perzel's?
Are you comfortable knowing that millions of your
emails, your staff leave records and documents on
your servers and hard drives have been examined
by a partisan Republican like Walter Cohen?
What if someone now discretely turns potentially
damaging information about you and your staff over
to John Perzel or, for that matter, any Republican
interested in recapturing your hard won majority?
Dump the lawyers who are addicted to the millions in
Democratic leadership funds DeWeese has been
paying them for nearly two years! Those lawyers
served DeWeese, not the Democratic caucus and
now one of them works for Perzel!
There is great hope among Democratic activists all
over the state that the House Democratic caucus will
break from the past and start the new session with a
new Majority Leader. There is great hope that you
will have a renewed effort to stand up to Republicans
like Tom Corbett when necessary and will continue
to fight for a better and progressive future for our
state.
