Dear Vanderbilt Travelers and Friends, It is commonplace of guidebooks to speak of the long and rich and varied history of the Mediterranean and of the layers upon layers of civilizations whose remains are preserved here. This voyage from Istanbul to Rome shows why. The itinerary encompasses some of the very oldest sites in Europeprehistoric temples on Malta and magnificent Bronze Age sites on Sardinia and Crete. It takes in, as well, some of the most beautifully preserved Byzantine and Gothic art and architecture to be found anywhere in the Mediterraneanon Chios and Corsica. And at the very heart of the voyage is Sicily, home to the stunning Doric temples at Selinunte. In addition to the rich lecture and discussion sessions you will be treated to special concerts by our own Vanderbilt Blair School musicians, Amy Jarman, Melissa Rose, John Johns, and Chris Teal. They will offer a total of four recitals, two of which will take place at elegant venues ashoreThe Nomikos Foundation on Santorini and the Palazzo Parisio in Valletta, Malta. This is the first time Blair School musicians will be featured on a Corinthian II voyage. As Corinthian II moves from island to island along this leisurely route, we will explore no fewer than three UNESCO World Heritage sites: the new monastery (Nea Moni) on Chios; the Tarxien Temples on Malta; and the mysterious defensive fortification of Su Nuraxi on Sardinia. In addition, we will discover remains of Minoan civilization on Santorini and Crete, the westernmost outpost of Classical Greek civilization at Selinunte, and the medieval old-town of Bonifacio, Corsica. Professor Carla Antonaccio, Chair of the Classical Studies Department at Duke University, and Josef Chytry of the University of California, Berkeley, will share responsibility for introducing us to these various cultures and shaping our understanding of their origins and legacies. I encourage you to strongly consider this unique opportunity to travel with four outstanding Blair musicians aboard the Corinthian II, giving an entirely new and incomparably deeper meaning to island hopping. We look forward to welcoming you aboard this summer as we set sail for Classic Islands of the Mediterranean. Please join us as we give an entirely new and incomparably deeper meaning to island hopping. Sincerely,

John Hindle, BA68, PhD81 President Vanderbilt Alumni Association P.S. At the drastically reduced rates, we expect the voyage to sell out quickly. Make your reservation today.

Friday, July 27, 2012 FlY FroM uSA Saturday, July 28 iStANbul, turkey | eMbArK Arrive in Istanbul and transfer to Corinthian II. (D) Sunday, July 29 ChioS, greece Awaken this morning in Chios, the Greek island claiming to be Homers birthplace. The islands volcanic rock formations and deep green valleys forge a landscape of stunning color oppositions and intricate appearances. Visit the 11th-century Monastery of Nea Moni, a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the most important ecclesiastical monuments in Greece. The monastery sits majestically in a wooded vale and is decorated throughout with exquisite frescoes and mosaics. (B, L, D) Monday, July 30 SANtoriNi From the sea, enjoy a beautiful view of the village of Phira on Santorini. In the 2nd millennium b.c., volcanic eruptions shrouded the island in a blanket of pumice and ash, preserving many buildings in the town of Akrotiri. At the time of the eruptions, Akrotiri was inhabited by a sophisticated Bronze Age society. Visit the Museum of Prehistoric Thira before continuing to the unspoiled town of Oia for time at leisure. Our musical performance will take place at the Nomikos Foundation. (B, L, D) Tuesday, July 31 ChANiA or KNoSSoS | rethYMNoN, Crete Land in Crete, the island that was home of the Minoan civilization, Europes first. In the morning, visit Chania, perhaps Cretes loveliest city, with its historic walled town and picturesque Venetian harbor. Alternatively, you may tour Knossos, the most imposing Minoan palace of the island, or explore Cretes magnificent southern country. Sicily. Drive to Selinunte, the most westerly Greek colony in Sicily, founded in 650 b.c. A highland overlooking the sea provides a tranquil setting for the expansive ruins of what was once among the islands most progressive cities. Return to the ship for lunch before exploring the Museo Anselmi, housed in a stone-vaulted warehouse. Its prime exhibit is a Punic warship discovered off the coast, possibly sunk during a naval battle in 241 b.c and from which a number of relics have been recovered, including some intriguing contraband. Alternatively, drive to Motya, an 8th-century b.c. Phoenician commercial base, founded on a small island, now connected to Sicily by a causeway. Continue to Segesta for a glimpse of its magnificent Doric temple, built in 420 b.c. and ranked as one of the best-preserved ancient Greek sites to be found anywhere. But what especially commends this site is its setting. The ruins stand in majestic solitude atop a bucolic hill with virtually no modern-day structures marring the vista, making it easy to imagine what Sicily was like in ancient times. (B, L, D) Saturday, August 4 Su NurAXi | NorA | CAgliAri, Sardinia Arrive in Cagliari, Sardinias capital, built on a hill facing the sea. Disembark and drive to the village of Barumini to visit Su Nuraxi, Sardinias most important and impressive nuraghic complex and a UNESCO Heritage site. After lunch aboard ship, spend time at leisure to explore Cagliari on your own, or take an excursion to Nora, whose ancient remains date from the Carthaginian and Roman periods. (B, L, D) Sunday, August 5 boNiFACio, Corsica, France Stroll through the striking village of Bonifacio, with its winding medieval lanes and brightly colored houses. Admire the fine Gothic architecture and dramatic limestone cliffs. Attend a final recital aboard ship. In an era of mega cruise ships that carry thousands of passengers, Corinthian II is a delightful alternative. More like a private yacht than a cruise ship, Corinthian II accommodates only 114 guests in 57 suites. Corinthian IIs limited guest capacity, fine facilities, and distinctive style of operation attract like-minded travelers who return again and again to enjoy its custom-crafted itineraries and a style of cruising that is rarely found today. More than just a cruise, each voyage provides a comprehensive experience that reveals the singular aspects of the destinations. Aboard, a sense of community and a spirit of camaraderie prevail. All of Corinthian IIs suites face outside, providing views of the sea and landscape. Several have a private balcony. There are expansive open deck areas and other facilities, including a gym, library, beauty salon, two lounges, a sun deck with Jacuzzi, and an outdoor cafe. A spacious restaurant accommodates all guests in an open, unassigned seating. The cuisine is outstanding, and the overall service is efficient and friendly while unobtrusive. An elevator serves all decks. A resident physician attends a well-equipped infirmary. Served by 70 seasoned officers and crew, Corinthian II complies with the latest international safety regulations and is outfitted with the most current navigational technology.
