SS. Cyril & Methodius Feast Day February 14th

Constantine and Methodius were Greek brothers who were born in Thessalonica. They were gifted theologians and linguists and translated liturgical texts into the Slavonic language. Pope John Paul II declared them Patrons of Europe. They are known as the Apostles of the Slavs.

and support engaged and married couples. One of the great hallmarks of our Catholic Church is its promotion of marriage as a sacred vocation and the reverence and support for family life. There is a great need to strengthen marriage as a Christian sacrament and natural institution. There is evidence of the declining rate of marriage in society and in the Catholic Church. A 2011 report from the Pew and Research Center found that the marriage rate in the United States declined by 5% from 2009 to 2010. Only 51% of the nations adults are married. In the Church, the rate of decline has been just as steep. According to the Center for Applied Research in the Apostolate, since 1972 the number of marriages celebrated in the Catholic Church has fallen by nearly 60%. Bishop Kevin Rhoades, who is the chairman of the Committee on Laity, Marriage and Family Life, for the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops writes, These statistics measure the horizon that is meant to be engaged in hope. Our youth and young adults are hungry for the truth and promise of marriage. Families continue to take up their call to be agents of evangelization and to realize their identity as the domestic church. The seedbed for the new evangelization is ever ready. I often remind married couples who are celebrating a special anniversary to never underestimate the powerful witness they give to other married couples in our parish. Today, we need people who can be living witnesses of what it means to faithfully keep the life-long promises that they made to each other on their wedding day. Marriage is not just a beautiful day for a bride and groom, but it is a sacrament to be lived out, year after year, relying on the grace and guidance of God. Here is an interesting fact. Do you know what the divorce rate is for Catholics who have been married in the Catholic Church and practice their faith on a regular basis? The answer is 2%. I guess you can say that prayer is really good medicine for a marriage. Words from Cardinal George The U. S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), under the direction of the Obama Administration, mandated on Jan. 2 that religious-affiliated institutions, such as hospitals and universities, would be obligated to include contraception including drugs that cause

The best Catholic parishes today are vibrant, successful and faith-filled, mostly due to the willingness of parishioners who come forward and are willing to volunteer and serve. One or two priests cannot carry on the mission and ministry of Jesus all by themselves. They will quickly burn out trying to do all the work. I have a hunch that Jesus knew this early on in his ministry. As soon as he began his public ministry, he quickly started to recruit people to help him preach, teach and heal. He was good at delegating. Today we honor and give thanks to the hundreds of volunteers who, week after week, sacrifice their time and talents for the life of our parish. Our Appreciation Party this Sunday afternoon is just a simple way of showing our gratitude to our parishioners who help us to be a community of faith. Simply put, a parish will only be as good as its parishioners are willing to make it. Thank you to all who volunteer in any way. Thank you for all the ways that you say Yes when we ask for help and support. Thank you for your commitment and service. It makes a big difference. Our Appreciation Party takes place in the Gym after the 12:00 noon Unity Mass this Sunday. It is an opportunity for fellowship and thanksgiving for all that we are able to do in the name of Jesus. Note that the Beat the Lotto Raffle will be held during our Appreciation Party. Good Luck! Maybe this will be the big year for you? A special thank you goes out to all who served on the Beat the Lotto Committee. They have been working hard these past several months to organize this major fundraiser for our parish.

A Special Week

Throughout the United States, our Catholic Church recognizes this week as National Marriage Week (Feb. 7-14), World Marriage Day (Feb.12) and Valentines Day (Feb.14). This is an opportunity to celebrate the gift and blessings of marriage and to affirm

abortions and sterilization among preventive services coverage in virtually all health plans offered to Americans. Despite clear requests from the U.S. Catholic Bishops, other religious leaders and concerned Americans, prompted by the HHSs initial decision in August 2011, HHS has refused to expand the exemption to include religious-affiliated institutions. This ruling by HHS denies the diverse ways through which faith is expressed. It forces people to act against their free, conscious decisions made in the light of faith. Please take the time to carefully read an important letter from Cardinal George that is included in todays bulletin that expresses his deep desire to reform this regulation. Take the time to visit www.uscb.org/conscience to learn more about this assault on religious liberty and how to contact Congress in support of legislation that would reverse the Administrations decision. Happy Feast Day! This Tuesday we celebrate the feast of SS. Cyril and Methodius, the patron saints of our parish. The two bothers were great at preaching the faith. They worked hard in evangelization. With a strong missionary spirit, they spread the gospel message to those who never heard about the life of Jesus Christ. May we follow their example by giving witness to Christ every day. May we proudly carry our faith with us to all the places that God will take us. Who will you be able to bring to Christ?

There are NO CLASSES on Wednesday, February 22 due to Ash Wednesday. Plan on attending the Prayer Service at 4:30 PM n the church.

The Monday session DOES have class this week!!

Dear Parents, Two weeks ago we celebrated a very successful Catholic Schools Week. Many people worked long and hard to help plan the variety of events we had here at school. Our entire community is very thankful for all of the people who helped to make the week so special! Four of our seventh grade students recently represented our school at the Montini High School Academic Bowl. Congratulations to Robert Mastrud, Matas Maleiska, Natasha Skorusa and Monica Viz. They made it to the finals and finished in fourth place. We are proud of their hard work. Our kindergarten students recently enjoyed their 100th day of school! Besides walking 100 steps and clapping 100 times they also decorated their own shirts to celebrate the day. We are beginning to prepare for the Lenten Season. It will be a time for opening ourselves to God. As a faith community, we will follow Jesus during this time by carrying our cross through sacrifice, prayer and good works. Please remember we are accepting applications for the 2012-2013 school year. If you or someone you know is interested in our school, please have them call the office at (630) 257-6488.We will be very happy to answer questions and arrange tours if needed. As always, thank you for all you do to support our school. Mrs. S. Tkachuk Principal

Thank You to the 640 families who have supported our campaign with their pledge.
Thank you for your support this year to our Capital Campaign. We have completed the first phase of our project with the renovation and construction of much needed additional washrooms in the back of Church and Sacristy area. As well, two new Reconciliation rooms were constructed to provide a more reverent and sacred space to celebrate the Sacrament. Planning is now taking place to embark on the much larger second phase to begin in June of 2012 with the painting of the interior of our church. The good news is we are over halfway to our overall goal. The success of our campaign will enable our parish to continue our ministry and enhance our worship and prayer. Working together, we can met the needs of our parish community both today and for many years to come. Let us in faith, share our gift and care for our home.

Loving God, We thank You for the generous blessings You have bestowed upon Our Faith. May Your Spirit give us the vision to look into our hearts for inspiration, and in your honor, respond with our sacrifice, Our Gift. Help us as we care for this sacred and holy place, Our Home, where we come to offer you glory, praise and honor. Amen. Our Faith, Our Gift, Our Home Capital Campaign
