Differences and Changes0

Although Persona 3 Portable is a quasi-remake of the original PS2 RPG, its release after Persona 4 means that it has gameplay that is reminiscent of both the source material and its sequel. This doesn't mean that the game is just Persona 4's gameplay tacked onto Persona 3's storyline, however. While the blatantly major changes to the combat and Social Link systems does ultimately mean that the game arguably has "the best of both worlds," when you get down to the nitty gritty, things aren't necessarily that simple and that's what this section of the guide is here for. Naturally, it's intended for Persona series veterans who have past experience with the original 3, FES, and/or 4. Those who are playing Portable as a means of seeing 3's story for the very first time are therefore free to skip this section, as the changes are ultimately inconsequential for first-timers anyway. As such, here's a run-down of what's different in Portable in bullet point format.

Outside Battle/Story0
Selectable gender. You can now choose to go through Persona 3 Portable's storyline as either a guy or a girl. While the game features changes to the plot in both routes, the most substantial ones lie in the girl's route, as she's an entirely new character, coming with her own batch of exclusive Social Links. Selectable Velvet Room assistant. Should you choose to go the girl's route, you can choose who Igor's lackey is, whether that's once again Elizabeth or newcomer Theodore. By and large, they're mostly the same and give out the same sidequests, including the dating ones, which can end the same with Theodore. Optional data install. Right there on the title screen, you can opt to install a few hundred megabytes' worth of data to your PSP's Memory Stick. If you opt for this, load times will be consistently quick and painless. As such, it's advised that you do this only if you're playing the UMD version; the downloaded version naturally has no need for it already. It should be noted, though, that you still have to go into the options menu and turn on the option labeled "Data Install" to actually see the effects of the installation. Five different difficulty levels to pick from. Three of them are new to Persona 3: Beginner, Easy, and Maniac. The first two make the game easier than before by adding automaticreviving items for the protagonist should they fall in battle, with 30 for Beginner and 10 for Easy. Maniac, on the other, cranks the difficulty up significantly in certain areas, included 2x amplified damage for all enemies, a limited Persona compendium that only shows recent additions (as well as being costly to summon), and no New Game Plus perks whatsoever, even on consecutive runs. The remaining two difficulty levels, Normal and Hard, are from the original game and function as they did before. Generally speaking, however, Atlus seems to have rebalanced the game such that the difficulty curve is significantly less steep, even on harder settings.

The Vision Quest. On January 1, Elizabeth and Theodore's sister, Persona 4's very own

Margaret, appears in the game and allows you to pursue optional battles that are among the game's hardest, especially since they have restrictions you have to win under. Taking place in what used to be FES' Desert of Doors, the area is accessible via a door that shows up to the left of the main staircase in the lobby. Theodore/Elizabeth now notify you from time about regular civilians who have been trapped inside Tartarus. Although rescuing the people is optional, you do get rewards from Officer Kurasawa for doing so. To make the search for the people easier, you can ask Theodore or Elizabeth to tell you their general whereabouts within a specific range of floors within Tartarus after they have provided the initial notification. When a rescue effort involves multiple people, you must return to the Velvet Room each time to find out where to go next. It should be noted that there are times when the people kidnapped are actually Social Links. Failing to rescue them will not mean a game over, but it will prevent you from completing the Social Link for the rest of the game if you had not already done so. The game will notify you automatically if a trapped person is a Social Link when Theodore or Elizabeth calls you. No epilogue content from FES. This means that you don't get to play The Answer in No anime cutscenes in-game. You get the two for the title screen and that's it. For scenes Portable, although that's probably something of a relief to most players. where they would normally show up, you get two-dimensional stills and character portraits. The only exception to this is when you gain Orpheus at the beginning of the game, which is still nonetheless rendered in the game's graphics engine. No polygonal content outside Tartarus exploration and combat. This means that regular cutscenes and Social Links are also two-dimensional stills with character portraits. No real animation is present whatsoever. Overworld navigation is replaced with a cursor that lets you move around more quickly, but otherwise lets you interact with objects, people, and places in the exact same ways as in the original game. The square button function from Persona 4 is present, letting you navigate environments The Inari Sushi stand at the shrine now acts as a place where you can duplicate your and transition to different places without having to physically move the cursor yourself. stock of Spell Cards (a new feature to Persona in general explained below) for free, albeit with a five-day waiting period. Part-time jobs are now available at two different shops in the Paulownia Mall, as well as the movie theater at the main monorail station. In addition to letting you earn additional money outside of Tartarus and item selling, the jobs can also boost your courage, academic, and charm attributes. The higher the levels are of the appropriate attributes for the work place, the more money you earn, too. However, the places all have individual schedules that dictate when you can actually work; otherwise you can only use the facilities as you normally would.

No more free healing by returning to Tartarus' lobby. If you want to refill your HP and SP,

you now have to talk to same clock you use to save. The pricing, thankfully, is typically far less brutal than Persona 4's Mysterious Fox ever was. That same clock also has a menu option that can provide various combat and gameplay Prolonged combat and exploration sessions do not automatically result in characters tips to those who are new to the game. becoming tired while still within Tartarus. However, if a party member faints and you return to the lobby without reviving them beforehand, they will be revived with a tiredness status attached. Furthermore, the tiredness status can still occur after a night of exploring Tartarus if you choose to fight multiple guardians in one night. Should the protagonist themselves become tired, normally after you've concluded a lengthy Tartarus session, you can still resolve it via the Nurse's Office, Paulownia Mall, or going to bed early. Going to the door at the top of the staircase in the main lobby in Tartarus allows you to warp to the highest floor you've currently explored, allowing you to pick up directly where you left off without having to use the regular teleporter.

Personas0
In addition to the traditional methods of giving Personas new abilities via levelling up and fusion inheritance, you can now change Personas' ability sets via Skill Cards. Essentially, every Persona has a special Skill Card that contains a unique skill that they'll give to you once you reach the appropriate level. You can then use that Skill Card to give that skill to any other Persona in your arsenal, although the cards themselves are limited in quantity. This is still handy, as it allows you to potentially bypass restrictions in skill inheritance posed by fusion and the cards also often contain skills you can use to now easily complete Theodore or Elizabeth's fusion requests. They're also just plain handy if you want to bolster your Persona in ways that you otherwise normally couldn't, or at least not without great difficulty. The party's Personas now automatically upgrade their abilities once they start running out of skill slots. This means that you don't have to manually tell Yukari, for example, to get rid of Garu in favor of Garula, as the game just does it for you. As a result, some members' overall skill sets are slightly altered so as to properly facilitate this automation without necessary sabotaging their balance (ie: replacing unrelated skills at random).

Inside Battle0
Party members can now be manually controlled. Just like in Persona 4, you can turn this on via the Tactics menu when it's the protagonists' turn. If you just want to play the entire game this way and don't want to have to turn this feature on every single battle, you can tell the game to save your previous battle's tactics automatically via the options menu when the game is paused outside of combat. Co-op attacks from Persona 4 return, although they're all functionally the same, regardless of who teams up with you. When initiated, the game randomly selects an enemy and then you and your partner perform a critical hit together, knocking the opposition down. It

should be noted, though, that unlike Persona 4, where critical-dealing co-op attacks were classified as Almighty damage internally, Persona 3 Portable's do not have that luxury. Instead, the co-op attack is classified as a regular physical attack whose type is a combination dependent on who's working with you. For example, if it's Akihiko, the co-op attack is a mixture of both strike and slash. Although this normally doesn't matter, it can lead to situations where the game's AI will occasionally pick an enemy that's already down if the only alternatives are enemies that are resistant to both physical attack types combined. This normally occurs only within the last block of Tartarus, as it has enemy groupings that are somewhat consistent to have physical resistances of some sort. Unlike Persona 4, though, you no longer have to level up the individual characters' Social Links to have access to this feature; it is unlocked automatically once SEES' first Social Link chain, the Fool Arcana, reaches a high enough level, meaning everyone can do it at the same time once it's available. Also like Persona 4, other party members are able to tack mortal blows for you once you per battle per character. This is also unlocked automatically via levelling up the Fool Arcana and is open to everyone once that has happened. The protagonist is no longer able to equip weapons of any type. If you're the male, then you only get one-handed swords. If you're the girl, then you only have access to naginatas. Both weapons are classified as slash-type when you used them for physical attacks. All characters can now guard instead of going into stand-by if you want to bypass their turn. Guarding works the same as it does in Persona 4, providing a one-attack reduced damage shield that also prevents the normal detriments from having weaknesses exploited. Fuuka can no longer be commanded to use Oracle... as if many people really used it all that much to begin with.

Social Linking0
Gender exclusive Social Links. Although both the boy and the girl protagonists have equal access to all of the Arcanas for Social Linking, the individual characters involved are sometimes different depending on who you play as. The girl's Social Link set arguably has the more appealing exclusive characters, which now include all of the male members of SEES (sans Ikutsuki), as well as a few altered ones for school clubs. Some of the new Social Links for the girl do still require levelling up personality attributes, such as charm for Akihiko and courage for Ken. Furthermore, unlike the guy's route in the original Persona 3, the girl's Social Links with other guys do not automatically result in her hooking up with them at their conclusion. Making that happen is now dependent on making the right dialog choices at critical junctures, which also includes Theodore's quasi-Social Link quest set.

School Questions + Exams0

Every now and again at school you'll be asked a question by your teacher (or sometimes helping out Junpei). Successfully answering the question slightly increases your Charm. There is no penalty for getting questions wrong. You'll also have to do exams during mid-terms and so fourth

which normally consist of five questions and an Academics check on the last day to fully calculate your score. So correctly answering all the questions and having Academics maxed to Genius will result in the highest score of your class. If you do well in your exams, Mitsuru will give you a reward depending on how well you do.

Social Links0
Social Links are a central part of the game and taking part in these can be very beneficial to the player. There are over twenty two social links in the game, each of them attributed a certain arcana. Social links involve spending time with the character and selecting the right options to gain social link points. For extra bonus points, have a persona in your possession of the same arcana when engaging in social links. For example, if you have the Pixie persona (whose Arcana is the Lovers), engaging in the Yukari Takeba social link (whose Arcana is also the Lovers) you'll

gain extra social link points. Keep this in mind in order to progress through social links faster. In some cases, you'll be able to engage in romantic relationships with certain characters. To do this you'll have to choose the right answers at certain points of dialogue (which will be tagged with (Romance) beside them). Being in romantic relationships simply leads to extra scenes on certain dates. At around Rank 7-8 of these relationships you'll have to option of not going into romantic relationships without penalty. On free days like holidays you'll also be invited out somewhere by your social link friends for extra social link points. Answers for these are found under "Holiday S.Links".
