A Reaction Paper on the movie SABEL

Summary: Can traumatic events change a mature person, or are our personalities fully formed at a young age? Can an unconventional love rescue one from the depths of despair? These are among the many intriguing questions posed by the extraordinary new film, Sabel . The film deals with the emotional journey of Sabel (Judy Ann Santos), a complex woman portrayed as both bad and good. Sabel, who has endured a troubled childhood, struggles to find herself in this provocative tale about life vagaries and ultimate redemption. Sabel has so many facets: a good daughter to her father, a rebellious kid to her mother, a generous and helping hand to her father s best friend, a kind and cheerful nun, a woman wearing a habit but enjoys good sex, a manipulative and scheming bitch to her would-be stepfather, a lascivious tart who pets in public, an inconsiderate friend, a boyfriend-grabber, a thoughtful lover, a good and caring mother, a lesbian and a murderer. In the beginning of the story, Sabel works as a nun in the prison ministry where she gets to catch the attention of Jojo (Wendell Ramos), a man wrongly convicted for a crime he didn t commit. In the oppressiveness of prison, he rapes her. That incident led sister Sabel to end her work as a nun. When Jojo was released from the jail, he looks for her. Fortunately, they met again and together lived in the same house. Sabel being pregnant already seemed to lose her temper most of the time. She became so irritated that even Jojo doesn t know what to do. Later on, Sabel left their house without Jojo s knowledge. While searching for Sabel, Jojo discovered her complex character but still loved her and sought to look for her. Jojo married a writer (Iza Calsado) whom Sabel brought in the prison. When Jojo went to Baguio for a business trip, he saw Sabel in the newspaper. He then found out that Sabel was charged with murder and that she is living together with her girl partner (Sunshine Dizon). Jojo met his son and Sabel s partner for the first time at the prison. The story ended when Sabel, being declared as non guilty of the crime she personally did; had reconciliation with her mother, Jojo, and Jojo s wife.

Moral Lesson: The mystery in Sabel enables everyone to look into our lives and reflect from it. We have to know whether this path we are taking now is really the path we want to acquire. We have to ask ourselves question like, Is this really we want in life? . Hence, we should think

before we act. One good thing presented in Sabel was the willingness to pursue things on, no matter how hard it is. Perseverance presented by Jojo was extremely strong. When Jojo fell in love with Sabel he tried to become a good person, although he was once a prisoner; and does everything just to prove Sabel that he s a worthy man for her. Life has ups and downs however we have to face it with all our might so as we could overcome it. Perseverance is always the key to success. Moreover, the twists or the unexpected events in this story add color to the plot which makes it more interesting to watch.
