Missed layups cost Aggies, 66-59

GreenSboro, nCAll evidence shows that if the Aggies want to make their way through the MEAC Mens Basketball Tournament next month in nearby Winston-Salem, they will have to rebound the basketball. North Carolina A&T dropped to 2-14 this season when it has been outrebounded as Savannah State defeated the Aggies 66-59 Monday night at Corbett Sports Center. The Aggies were outrebounded 46-27 against the Tigers as the two teams played each other for the first time. Our energy level is so erratic with this team. Its unbelievable, said Aggies coach Jerry Eaves. One game were moving, the next game were running in water. Its just unbelievable. We got beat to every loose ball. We just couldnt get over the hump. We got close a few times; we just could never get over the hump. The Aggies trailed by as many as 10 in the second half. But a Marc Hill steal led to a R.J. Buck layup that cut the Tigers lead to 58-56 with 3:37 remaining. A&Ts inability to get any closer became frustrating for Eaves and his team. Seconds after Bucks layup cut the lead to two, Simpson stepped in front of a Deric Rudolph pass. Simpsons clear path to the basket looked as if it was going to tie the game. His layup attempt rolled off the rim, however, leading to a Rashad Hassan layup that gave Savannah State a 60-56 lead with 2:45 remaining. Simpson did hit two free throws to cut the lead back to two. On the Tigers next possession, the Aggies forced Rudolph into a long 3-pointer, but Cedric Smith rebounded the miss and was fouled on the play. Smith connected on both free throws to give the Tigers a 62-58 lead with 1:39 to play. A&T forward Austin Witter had another impressive drive to the basket, but he lost control of the basketball on his dunk attempt, leading to a Kierre Richardson rebound. Two Preston Blackman free throws sealed the win for the Tigers. We missed way too many layups, said Eaves. We lived at the basket. The bottom

ROUNDUP
Miss. Valley st. 58, southern 53: Paul Crosby scored 23 points and grabbed 15 rebounds and Terrence Joyner had a big second half to lead Mississippi Valley State over Southern for its 13th straight win. The Delta Devils (14-11, 13-0 SWAC) outscored Southern 35-30 in the second half behind 13 of Joyners 14 points. Cameron Monroe led Southern with 15 points. Morehouse 83, tuskegee 77: Andrae Nelson hit 14-of-20 shots most of them dunks for 31 points. He combined that with 10 rebounds, four assists, two blocks and a steal, for his best game ever as a Maroon Tiger. Shawn Allen had 28 points and eight rebounds, for his best scoring of the season. Allen hit 9-of-14 shots from the field and 10of-14 from the line. Calvin Thomas, who hit 10-of-20 shots, including 6-of-10 from beyond the arc, led Tuskegee with 29 points. Derrick White had a game-high 14 rebounds for Tuskegee who fell to 19-9 (13-7 SIAC). xAvIer 67 TougAloo 61: It was the final game at The Barn, a 1,300-seat gymnasium which opened in 1937, for the Gold Rush (19-7 overall, 8-3 GCAC). Xavier will play next season in a 4,500-seat facility which still is under construction. Xavier, ranked 25th in NAIA Division I, snapped the 11-game win streak of the 18thranked Bulldogs (19-6, 10-2) and prevented them from clinching the GCAC regular-season championship. Anthony Simmons scored 13 points for the Gold Rush, and Chris Iles had 11, including three 3-pointers. Jamaan Kenner and Denzell Erves scored nine points apiece, and Erves grabbed 10 rebounds, Marquise Mems scored 21 points, Juan Gray 12 and Kadon Day 10 for Tougaloo, which had won eight of its past 10 meetings with Xavier. James Carter grabbed 10 rebounds.

Sophomore guard Jeremy Underwood had 11 points in the Aggies loss on Monday.

line is we missed too many layups and free throws in the clutch. Hill and Jeremy Underwood led the Aggies (11-16, 6-6) with 11 points apiece. Hassan, Smith and Jyles Smith combined for 11 of the Tigers 16 offensive rebounds. The Tigers (16-10, 9-2) 16 offensive boards led to a 17-4 Savannah State advantage in second chance points. Thats what they do, said Eaves about the Tigers ability to grab offensive boards. Theyre persistent around the basket. We did not play very well, and were going to have to find a way to just keep our energy level at the level it needs to be. Rebounding is nothing more than effort, Eaves continued. They werent bigger than us by any stretch of the imagination. They were just more active. They were running

more. Were just going to continue to practice on blocking out. The Aggies trailed by 10 in the first half before the Hill scored the next four points, including a jumper in the lane, to cut the Tigers halftime lead to 32-26. The Aggies turned the ball over a season-low six times. Their pressure just forced us out of our offense a little bit too much, said Hill. They kept the ball out the point guards hands most of the time with the press, so we had to start the offense with our 2 or 3 guards. It didnt affect us that much, but most of our shots werent falling today. We have plays for everything, so (their press) really didnt bother us. We missed too many layups. ncataggies.com

Caldwell named AD at Grambling

President Frank G. Pogue announced that Dr. Percy Chico Caldwell will assume the position of Athletic Director at Grambling State University One of the difficult decisions was narrowing this extensive highly qualified pool of candidates to one individual, says Dr. Pogue. Dr. Caldwells experience and professional preparation will empower Gramblings athletics to the next level of excellence and bridge the gap between Gramblings historic achievements and success in athletics and the academic mission of the University. He will bring significant strength to the athletic administration including planning, research, marketing and financial management. Dr. Caldwell has held several athletic positions over the course of his career. He was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1989, named Coach of the year in 1990 and Athletic Director of the year in 1991 for the West Virginia Conference. He also served in the United States Army, Military Police Corps. To be afforded the employment opportunity at Grambling State University with rich athletics history drawing national attention a great academic institution is special and very exciting. The rich athletics history separates Grambling State University from any other university. The stage is already set, my job will be to start from here assisting Dr. Progue and his administration continue to operationalize the mission and vision at GSU, says Dr. Caldwell. To be working with Dr. Frank Pogue and the GSU athletics staff will be an amazing opportunity. I am excited to get started.

Last season we were more competitive than we have been in awhile. We just need to continue to build upon that success This is a very exciting time for me as a coach.
