Autograph: Teachers Notes Transformations: Higher Learning Objectives Be confident in the use of Autograph.

. Use correct vocabulary, for example: image, original, enlarge, reflect. Be able to create shapes from grouped points and using co-ordinates. Create reflections, using the x and y axis. Create rotations, using centre of rotation and specific angles. Create enlargements, using centre of enlargement and construction lines. Investigate the effect of moving the centre of transformation, including animating shapes. Be able to use non-integer and negative scale factors. Learning Outcomes All pupils will be able to: plot points and subsequently create a simple shape. reflect a shape in an axis. enlarge a shape using the origin as a centre of enlargement. rotate a shape around a the origin in a multiple of 90. explain how moving a point changes an image. Most pupils will be able to: use Autograph to check their answer to a transformation question. explain how construction lines are used to create images. be able to use a centre of transformation which is not the origin. explain the effect of a scale factor <1 Some pupils will be able to: animate transformations. solve problems with a negative scale factor, without Autograph. be able to use a centre of transformation which is not the origin, without Autograph. Resources Pupil Resource Transformations Higher Booklet Interactive Resources In Autograph, go to the Help menu. Select Autograph Resources > +2D Graphing > +Standard > +Transformations. Click on the television icon this will start a step-by-step user guide. Also try Help > Help > Teaching and Presentation Aid

Technical Help To create a squared grid, go to the Axes menu and select Edit axes. Click on Equal aspect. Alternatively, click on: If you wish to remove the negative axes you must move the origin. To do this, select the Axes menu and select Move origin. Then click on the origin and drag it to wherever you wish. Lesson Outline: This should be viewed as a Medium Term Plan and adapted to the requirements of your class. Starter: Basic Skills Discuss how to plot points. It would be best to take the whole class through the procedure and then do the mini-investigation. It does matter which order the points are plotted in. It might be useful to show the class a wrong shape and ask what the person was trying to plot. Reflection Activity 1: Autograph is not required. Discuss which axes is which and positioning of the final image. Allow the class time to review their answers to the pencil/paper activity once you have tried reflection in Autograph. Challenge: Discuss how a diagonal line of reflection would effect the shape. Rotation You must check that the computers are all in degrees before you start. If any are in radians, go to the Page menu, select Edit settings and choose degrees. Activity 1/2: Let pupils compare where they have drawn their rotation the instruction deliberately does not include clockwise or anti-clockwise, to provide a discussion point. You may need to introduce centre of rotation if it is not suggested by the class. How to : Activity 1: The booklet takes pupils through the initial Rotation process step-bystep. Activity 2: Investigating direct and centre of rotation. Enlargement Activity 1: The first activity does not require Autograph. Pupils should try the question in the booklet first.

Autograph will only draw enlargements with a centre of enlargement so this is an important discussion point. Before going on to the Animation section, make sure pupils can see how the construction lines meet at the centre of enlargement. Plenary Ideas With the projector off or muted, draw a shape on laptop and transform it without construction lines. Show the class your transformation. Ask the class to discuss what transformation you could have done. Pupils could also do this in pairs. Homework/Extension Review Questions are provided, however you may wish to set your own task.
