DOWNHOLE DRILLING TOOLS TECHNOLOGY

CATALOG DESCRIPTION: Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisite: Instructors Permission or MECT 2354 or MATH 1432 This course envisages studying different technologies and principles involved in various downhole tools that are used for drilling in offshore and onshore environments. Topics will include basic concepts, different optimization methods, penetration predictions, different nozzle selection criteria, diamond and roller cone bit weight on bit, stresses, failure criterion and hydraulic optimization with other special downhole tools. Hydraulics calculations in special downhole tools such as Hole-opener, Under-reamer, diverter sub, Turbines and downhole motor. Studies on Impact of Hydraulic Horsepower with split flows and Bit jet Impact force with split flows. The course will also focus on presenting different selection and placement methods of downhole tools in the string and expose the students to variety of problems and solve them successfully. Application of different techniques in the selection and use will be covered. Lectures will be supplemented with current literature on the new downhole drilling tool technologies. Substantial assignments and a term project are an integral part of the course. Laboratory sessions with the experimental methods and data analysis with software will provide experience on the principles studied. Learning Outcomes: Outcome 1. Students will demonstrate that they can select different drilling tools and technology for drilling. Outcome 2. Students will demonstrate that they are able to design and execute complex well plans with different tools and analyze problems Outcome 3. Students will demonstrate that they can integrate advanced methodologies with proper drilling strategy Outcome 4. Using the class project, students will demonstrate the planning and application of these technologies under different drilling conditions. In the past class projects have resulted in publication and presentation of papers in the professional conferences. Outcome 5. Students will present the capability of their analysis to rest of the class to get the feedback in a professional manner using modern presentation techniques.

1. A written project proposal will be requested. This project proposal should be 2-3 pages long and contain a detailed description and plan of what the project will be. It should contain objectives and a detailed plan of the project to be done. 2. A 15 minute class presentation on the project (15 minutes for presentation and 5 minutes for questions). These presentations will be scheduled for near the end of the semester. 3. A written final report will be due near the end of the semester. This report will contain details of the work and/or simulations. The report should contain 6-8 pages of text with 812 figures and tables. The report must be in the form of a standard SPE paper, written in students own words.
