Secondary One Orientation Camp
WE were all excited about our first camp as Riversidians. As we gathered in
the hall, the orientation group leaders (OGLs) taught us our first cheer. We
played several ice-breaker games to learn more about one another. It was
fun! We stayed up past midnight as we were all excited and could not sleep.
On the second day, we woke up at the sound of a loud horn. We had to do
the Chicken Dance. It was hilarious! We were then treated to a concert.
I especially like the tribal dance performed by the Chinese dance group.
We had a campfire that night. It was an energetic night filled with screams
and cheers. On the last day of the camp, we had our breakfast and then
packed our belongings. We learnt our last cheer and bade farewell to our
seniors. We went home exhausted but
nevertheless, it was an unforgettable
weekend.

Chinese New Year Celebration

OUR school ushered in the Year of the Rat with an exciting concert featuring
a wide range of performances. Unlike previous years where only our Chinese
dancers enchanted the audience with their performance, this year’s concert
showcased the best of our performing arts groups, with almost all of them
performing. It is an incontrovertible fact, though, that Chinese New Year will not
be complete without the eminent God of Fortune who is none other that our
full-time school counsellor, Mr Rajamogan. Moreover, the colourful lion dance
performance was put up by our very own boys from the Chinese Dance. Kudos
to all who ensured that the audience were entertained.

Performers ranged from students

notable that the Sec 1 students
also put up 2 dances to showcase
what they had learnt in their Dance

hour long concert, which featured a total of 22 musical instruments from
both Western and Eastern traditions, including the Chinese erhu, Malay
talempong and Indian tabla, was graced by Dr Teo Ho Pin, Mayor of North

Sec 3 Adventure Camp

ALL Sec 3 students attended an Adventure
Camp at Kota Tinggi, Malaysia, from 7 to 9
March. The students found the experience
exhilarating as it was the first time the school
organized an adventure camp in another country.
Besides building their stamina, the camp also
aimed to foster greater camaraderie among
the students. To achieve these objectives, the
students were provided with many exciting
activities such as Extreme Sports Tower, Low
Rope Course and Nature Training Elements. It
was indeed a thrilling and memorable camp for
all the Sec 3 students.

theme for our annual Sports Carnival
which was held on 20 March. The
main objective of this event was to

spirit. It was certainly a thrilling day for
all Riversidians.

Kota Tinggi Here We Come!

DURING the March holidays, the Boys’ Brigade 58th
Company went on their first overseas 3-day 2-night
Adventure Camp at Kota Tinggi, Malaysia. 29 students
comprising Sec 1, 2 and 3 students participated in
the rigorous programme involving raft-making, solo
night-walk and a group hike up and down Mt Panti
- a mountain of about 500 metres. It was especially
challenging for the Sec 1 boys as they did not have
any experience in trekking or outdoor camping.
Away from the comforts of home, the boys learnt to
appreciate their company-mates better; cooperate
despite differences; and encourage each other to
soldier on. At the end of the camp, all of them brought
home fond memories of camaraderie and friendship.

Exchange Programme with India (Chennai)

A group of thirty students with 3

teachers (Dr Subhashini, team leader,
Mdm Rekkha and Mr Tsung) went
on the exchange programme with
SBOA School in Chennai, India, from
10 to 16 March. The objectives of this
programme were:
(a) to enable our students to appreciate
and understand a different culture
from theirs and
(b) to expose our students to a foreign
learning environment so that they
could enhance their own learning
through different teaching
methodologies.
The highlight of the trip was the home
stay. It was certainly a wonderful
and unique experience. The home
stay had enabled us to understand
the Indian culture and tradition
better. Apart from the home stay,
we also visited many interesting
places. Being in Chennai for a week
had also given us the opportunity to
taste the various Indian cuisines. All
of us felt that it was a meaningful
and unforgettable trip.

Malacca Trip
FROM 6 March to 7 March, all Sec 2 pupils and their form
teachers went on a trip to Malacca as part of the school’s
Internationalization Programme. Apart
from appreciating the tradition and
culture of Malacca, the pupils also
visited places of interest such as
Porta de Santiago and St Paul Church.
Although the trip lasted only 2 days
and 1 night, the experience will stay
with the pupils for a long, long time.

Service Learning Trip to Yunnan

FROM 13 to 21 March, 29 students under the
charge of Miss Chithra and two other teachers, Mrs
Lee Ai Hoon and Mr Foo Her Min, embarked on
a service learning trip to Da Bo village in Yunnan.
Their sole aim was to volunteer their services to the
needy. Apart from teaching the children some basic
English, they also helped to paint part of the school.
The whole experience has taught
them to appreciate what they have
in Singapore. It has also made them
realise the importance of voluntary
service. Their greatest joy was
to be able to
help those in
need.
