on Monday, November 10, 2008, in the Smethport Area Elementary School.

 Adopting a resolution indicating that the Smethport Area School District will not
raise school property taxes above the State’s adjusted index for the 2009-10
fiscal year.
 The McKean County Tax Claim Bureau to sell a property on 7 Cleveland Street,
Hazel Hurst that is currently in the county repository to Darlene L. Mealy for
$306. The property was formerly owned by Janet Bosh.
COMMENDATIONS:
Congratulations to Mr. George Romanowski who has been named the recipient of
the 2008 PASA Award for Service to the Community. The annual award, co-
sponsored by the Pennsylvania Association of School Administrators and Lincoln
Investment Planning, Inc., recognizes a school administrator who has demonstrated
commitment to excellence as evidenced through notable service to his or her
community. Dr. Kathleen Kelley, 2007-2008 PASA President, acknowledged Mr.
Romanowski on October 16th at the PASA Recognition Luncheon during this year’s
Annual Leadership Conference at the Hershey Lodge & Convention Center in
Hershey. In addition, Lincoln Investment Planning, Inc., contributed $1,000 in his
name to the Smethport Area School District Foundation.
Congratulations to the Boys’ Soccer team. They made it to the District IX Class A service.
semi-finals. After losing to Brookville, 2-1, Smethport finished with a 13-4-3 record. The service is available to all parents, students, faculty, and staff of the Smethport Area

“Shine Your Smile Day” is coming! The Smethport Area School District is hosting
Mobile Dentists/Smile Programs on 1/15/09. We have invited Mobile Dentists/Smile
Programs to bring its preventive dental care program to our school because we know
how important good oral health is to our children’s overall general health.
Mobil Dentists/Smile Programs will set up a mini-dental office in our building and can
provide dental examinations, cleanings, fluoride treatments, xrays, and sealants (if
needed) for all children who return the completed forms that were sent home will all
students. If you did not get a form, please call the appropriate school to have one
mailed to you.

School District’s Message Alerts
The Smethport Area School District has recently adopted the e2Campus emergency
notification system that enables the school to send urgent news to your home phone or
your cell phone. Once you sign up for the service, the school can text your cell phone
and/or call your home phone with timely information about emergencies, cancellations,
or reminders about school events.
Depending on your personal cell phone plan, there may be a nominal fee from your
carrier to receive text messages, but there is no charge from the school to use the

The new system, powered by e2Campus, enables school officials to send instant alerts

Use Flowers to Create a Turkey
Centerpiece
Thanksgiving Day is turkey day!
A turkey with all the trimmings
gets center stage at our annual
gathering of aunts, uncles, cousins
and friends, but this year we’re
going to put a little twist into the
production. While the bird is in the
oven, it’s fun to add to the
celebration of the day by getting

the kids and guests involved in
creating a turkey centerpiece that
begins with a beautiful bouquet of
flowers in fall colors. They can
make this entire eye-catching floral
display from start to finish.
For the turkey’s body, you will
need about two dozen flowers in
various fall colors, such as red,
gold, yellow and orange. Good
choices are marigold,
chrysanthemums or fall daisies.
For the neck and head of the
turkey, choose a yellow or orange
iris or a bird of paradise. (Check
with your florist in advance and
request a bird of paradise for best
results.)
To create the tail “feathers,” ferns
or long, large leaves from many
house or garden plants are ideal.
Here’s the creative fun:
Soak a 4-by-4-inch floral foam
oasis in a pan of water. When the
foam is saturated, set it in a plastic
container that is about the same
size. Create the body of the turkey
by trimming the stems of the
flowers and poking them into the
foam to form a dome shape. Add
the iris or bird of paradise to one
end of the arrangement for the
head and neck of the turkey. Tuck
in leaves at the opposite end for a
tail.
Make the turkey’s wattle by
knotting together two red or
burgundy balloons (do not inflate
them), and securing them to the
stem of the iris or bird of paradise
with floral wire or a straight pin.
Your unique turkey is ready to
place on the table for your
Thanksgiving meal.

Stress Less During Holiday Travel
(Family Features) December is one of the
busiest travel months of the year. When you
add the normal stresses of travel to the holiday
rush, you can feel a lot more manic than
merry.
If just thinking about holiday travel makes
you tense, take heart. There are some things
you can do to minimize the stress.
If you're flying to your holiday destination:
* Aim for the middle
Booking flights midweek (on Tuesdays, Wednesdays or Thursdays)
can mean a better price. Traveling midweek means smaller crowds to
deal with than on the Saturday or Sunday after the holiday. If you can,
book the first flight out on the Monday morning after the holiday.
* Be an early bird
Don't take the last flight of the day. Flights scheduled earlier in the day
tend to have better on-time performance. And if problems arise due to
weather or other delays, an early flight gives you a better chance of
booking another flight and still arriving at your destination the same day.
* Play the waiting game
Arrive at the airport in plenty of time to get through all the security
checks. And prepare for long waits with activities for the whole family.
* Don't get wrapped up
If you're bringing gifts, leave them unwrapped - it will make going
through security much easier. There will be plenty of time to wrap them
once you get to your destination. Even better, shop online and ship the
presents directly to your destination.
If you're driving on your holiday trip:
* Get in tune
Get a routine maintenance check for your car and top off all fluids,
especially anti-freeze and windshield washer fluid.
* Brace yourself
Pack a winter survival and emergency kit that has blankets, jumper
cables, flashlights (with fresh batteries), and non-perishable food. Make
sure your cell phone is fully charged and you have up-to-date maps.
* Create a kid zone
Plan travel activities that will keep children entertained while on the
road. Create an activity bag for each child that has new and familiar
toys, audio books, as well as in-the-car group activities such as the I Spy
game, treasure hunts or license plate games.
No matter how you travel, getting rest is key to having a good time.
The less sleep you get, the more stressed you'll be.
Holiday schedules can make it hard to get enough good sleep. But
these tips can help you get more rest and make your holiday more
relaxing:
* Avoid overloading your schedule. Not every minute has to be filled
with busy activity. Down time for reading, resting, or watching TV is
good for everyone.
* Exercise is a good stress reliever. Working up a sweat can work off
tension and help you sleep better.
* Choose a hotel for your stay that offers amenities such as online
check-in, fitness centers and comfortable beds.
Don't let traveling add stress to your holidays. Planning ahead can
make your travel days a lot merrier than you think.

You know absolutely nothing about western wear. You grew up in the
city far away from farms and ranches. Your sister's fiancé, however,
didn't. He spent much of his childhood on his family's ranch, and
wouldn't you know it. When you asked him what he wanted for
Christmas, he took one look at his tattered cowboy hat and asked you to
buy him a new one.
You're way out of your league when it comes to purchasing a cowboy
hat and could use some pointers. You should start by studying the shape
of your sister's fiancé's face. Is it round, oval, square or heart-shaped?
The hat you select should complement his facial shape. Round faces, for
example, call for hats with a full crown, slight to no taper and a
moderate flat-set brim, while heart-shaped faces call for hats with a
well-tapered crown and a narrow brim.
The hat you select should also complement your sister's fiancé's build.
Short, thin builds call for hats with a somewhat high crown and a brim
that suits the person's facial shape. Tall, thin builds call for hats with a
low crown and a fairly wide brim. Short, stocky builds call for hats with
an average crown and a narrow brim. Tall, stocky builds call for hats
with a fuller crown and a wide flat-set brim. Tall, average builds call for
hats with a large crown and a moderate brim.
You must also consider how your sister's fiancé will use the hat, for
everyday wear in the elements or just occasionally. If he is going to be
wearing it outside as he works around the ranch, he will want a hat with
a large brim to shade his face. If not, you can concentrate on getting him
a hat that suits his facial shape and build.
Once you have a good idea of what type of hat to buy, you can start
the actual shopping. Be sure you go to quality western wear stores and
bring along a picture of your sister's fiancé for reference. As always,
don't hesitate to ask for assistance. If you don't know why one hat costs
more than another, be sure you ask. It could be due to any number of
things from the brand name to the materials. Make sure you know what
you are buying and keep the receipt just in case you don't quite meet
your sister's fiancé's expectations and need to return it.
