What is G.E.M.S.? Girl Engineers, Mathematicians and Scientists is a new organization that hopes to accomplish just what its name suggestscultivate interest among high school girls to pursue futures in engineering, math and science. Despite their skills and abilities to succeed, there are few girls who pursue education or careers in these fields. Many are discouraged by the lack of women role models or mentors. Our solution is to give girls the knowledge and mentors to help them make informed decisions because we believe that girls can accomplish anything given enough encouragement. We want to Make Opportunities for Girls to Shine. Brief History Sabina Maddila formed G.E.M.S. in April, 2010 while finishing her junior year at Naperville Central High School and with two of her best friends, Jaya and Medha Parulekar, started setting up the summer workshop. They have received lots of encouragement and mentors from Fermilab, Illinois Institute of Technology, Society of Women Engineers and the Midwest chapter of Indian Institute of Technologys alumni association. What is GEMS Summer Workshop? Following much the successful inaugural workshop last summer, the 2011 G.E.M.S. Workshop is scheduled for Saturday, August 13th at IIT Rice Campus in Wheaton, IL (201 East Loop Rd.). This day long program will feature a keynote speaker, mentor-led panel and breakouts covering the major areas and topics of Science and Engineering today. Who are the Mentors? Prominent women engineers and scientists from some of Chicagolands leading companies and institutions such as Alcatel-Lucent, Argonne, Fermilab, Motorola, Nalco, and universities like U of C, IIT, UIC and NU have volunteered to be mentors. They represent various levels of experience; some come from academia and research while others from industry and business. Mentors will share their thoughts on... - what they do every day, why they picked their fields, what keeps them in them, what is cool about their jobs and companies? - job market trends, past and future for various career choices (research, industry) - college prep, undergraduate and graduate studies, best engineering colleges - how to prepare for successful careers as GEMS, what skills make you successful?
