Sacred vs Secular Marriage is both sacred and secular. The sacred nature of marriage is reflected by people s innate wanting of getting married. This thinking of people ties the marriage to faith, ritual, religion and spirituality. A sacred marriage is an agreement between two who love each other in God and with God, whose joining becomes an expression of the desire of each to love and serve God together. In this bond, values extend outward and reflect the goodness of God and of life. Without God included in the bond, the marriage is strictly secular. A secular marriage is a contract between two people agreeing to remain committed to one another. It is not dependent upon a church. In present times, it is required for a marriage to be both sacred and secular. A couple needs to be legitimate meaning the union require papers and documents to support the marriage. In Roman Catholic marriage, all bonds include the union of the couple in with God. Examples: The relationship that my parents have is both secular and sacred. It is secular since they have documents to support their marriage. The sacred aspect of their marriage comes from their union in God and with God. They follow the doctrine of the church and moreover, they provide testament to the love that they have with God. Example of a purely secular marriage is gay marriage and marriages done in Las Vegas. This type of marriages is only by law and not including the name of God.

State vs Event Marriage is defined as the condition of being united to a person of the opposite sex as husband or wife in a consensual and contractual relationship recognized by law. Basing from the definition itself, marriage is a state. It is one wherein the husband and wife enjoy the companies of each other for eternity. In the state, both sides of the union commit to be together. Marriage as an event is manifested

through the celebration itself. The celebration does not refer to the party and the reception but the wedding ceremony itself wherein the couple share vows with each other. Marriage can also be seen when a couple in union brings a fruit into the world. Examples: When having those marriage talks with my parents, both of them declared that marriage is a physical and spiritual condition. The physical state is something very personal and I don t want to go into detail on. The spiritual state they ve said is their commitment with each other that they will not consider separation. In this state, they said that they become complete. The events of marriage can be documented through pictures and letters. Moments like their wedding ceremony and their children s are examples of marriage events.

Personal vs Social Personal and social refer to the levels of marriage. On the personal level, nature and spirit are united. Marriage is instituted by the Creator as a form of life in which a communion of persons is realized involving the use of the sexual faculty. The Church teaches that Christian marriage is an efficacious sign of the covenant between Christ and the Church. Also, it becomes a vehicle with which personal happiness can be achieved. The social level is related to procreation. What is legally and socially recognized is not only the personal commitment but also a social commitment to contribute to the future of society by having and raising children. While not all married couples have children, the relationship between a man and a woman has the inherent potential to create children. Moreover, the social level also includes the safeguarding of children in our society. Couples serve as an institute wherein children can be nourished and safeguarded. Examples: We, children of our parents, are manifestations to the social contribution of their marriage.
