night to rook four, checkmate probably
isnt as exciting a call as Do you believe
in miracles? Yes! but for several chess
masters and senior masters, there was
plenty of excitement in the township as
close to 20 chess champions came home
for a high-level tournament featuring
some of the best strategists in the
Delaware Valley.
Chess players come from all backgrounds, said Dov
Gorman, a U.S. Chess Federation tournament director
and Evesham Township resident. The way you play a
match whether it be aggressive or passive can say a
lot about what kind of a person you are, Gorman said.
I think what attracts many peo-
ple to the game is that its a way to
express themselves and
their personality.
If you
are cautious, or if youre very aggressive, you see that
in a game. I like more of a balanced game. It creates
many artistic opportunities, because if you know the
game and the rules, you can create many aesthetically
pleasing combinations, Gorman said. Thats my style,
but there are many people who are more po-
sitional. My style is more
tactical. People are more positional where they work in
a very orderly way to achieve very small advantages and
to take small risks.
About 15 masters from the Delaware Valley flocked to
Gormans home in Evesham Township on Super Bowl
weekend for their own ultimate championship, compet-
ing in the first-ever sanctioned chess tournament in
Marlton.
There are lots of similarities between chess and
football. Winning a football match is not based on
strength; its based on a lot of intelligence and strategy,
he said.
Gorman knows the game in and out, as the U.S. Chess
Federation recognizes him as a senior master.
Each game played was kept to a one-hour time-limit,
Gorman explained, and competitors racked up points
through wins and draws.
It was a Swiss System-style tournament,
with each competitor playing the same
number of matches and playing

School election moves to November
By ROBERT LINNEHAN
The Marlton Sun
Get used to it Evesham Town-
ship the school district is going
for a big change in 2012.
Members of the Evesham
Township Board of Education
voted to move the annual school
board election to coincide with
the November general elections,
board president Sandy Student
reported.
Gov. Christie signed a bill into
law that allowed all school dis-
tricts in the state to move school
elections to November. Addition-
ally, the bill allows all school
budgets that fall within the 2-per-
cent cap to be passed automatical-
ly, with no approval needed by
township voters.
A school board would have to
present a second question for
voter approval if a budget is pro-
posed to exceed the 2 percent cap.
Board members whose terms
were to have expired in April will
be extended through January,
pending the results of the Novem-
ber election.
Several members of the board
expressed concerns over town-
ship voters losing their say in the
budget, but Student said anytime
a governmental entity can en-
courage more participation in an
election, its a success.
You go from less than 10 per-
cent to possibly 50 percent in a
presidential year. You have more
people to make decisions with
this, Student said. Its also a
normal election cycle. Its a full
day for people able to vote; its not
out of the reach of the normalcy.
People can vote before their work-
day and it also would take out the
possibility of the election happen-
ing during spring vacation. I
dont see a negative. Anytime
more people participate in the
electoral process, thats a great
thing.
With each budget automatical-
ly passing if under the 2 percent
cap, Student said it becomes more
important for the BOE members
to analyze and look critically at
each school district budget.
The school district elections
will have their own section
carved out on the election ballot,
Student said. While some have ex-
pressed concerns voters will only
fill out the general election infor-
mation, Student was skeptical
many would do so.
The board will still be required
to have a public hearing on the
budget and will still invite plen-
ty of public input, he said.
The school district pays be-
tween $23,000 and $25,000 each
year to hold the elections in April,
Student said, and with the feder-
al, state, county, municipal and
school elections all being held on
the same date, it would spread
that cost across several entities.
The way the bill is written, the
school district would be responsi-
ble for any additional costs that
the county board of elections in-
curs if it holds the election in No-
vember.

police report
The following items can be
found on file with the Evesham
Township Police Department:
On Feb. 7, the Evesham Police
Department responded to a home
in the unit block of Five Crown
Royal to investigate a burglary.
An investigation found when the
homeowner went to investigate
the sound of footsteps inside her
residence, she discovered an un-
known man on the first floor bur-
glarizing the home. The man fled
the home out the rear of the resi-
dence into the wooded area be-
hind the townhomes.
On Oct. 19, Evesham police re-
sponded to an apartment in the
unit block of the Nieuw Amster-
dam Apartments, 37 N. Maple
Ave., Marlton, for a burglary. In-
vestigation found that an un-
known person gained entry to the
home and stole jewelry. On Feb. 10,
the police arrested a 31-year-old
man from Cherry Hill in connec-
tion with this burglary investiga-
tion. He was charged with third-
degree burglary and fourth-degree
theft. He was released after post-
ing $9,000 bail, according to police.
On Feb. 10 at 4:15 p.m., Eve-
sham police, through an ongoing
investigation into the sale of
drugs, executed a search warrant
on a vehicle in the parking lot of
800, N. Route 73. As a result of the
investigation, a quantity of pills,
money and the suspects vehicle
were seized. The investigation re-
sulted in the arrest of a 26-year-
old Hainesport man, who was
charged with third-degree distri-
bution of narcotics. He was re-
leased on a summons.
On Feb. 6, at 5:41p.m., an Eve-
sham police officer observed a
hand-to-hand drug transaction on
Carnation Drive by Elmwood
Road in Marlton. The officer
stopped one of the men as he was
leaving the area, who was arrest-
ed on scene. A second man was
later apprehended on Feb. 10, at a
residence in Pine Hill. The dealer,
a 40-year-old Berlin man, was
charged with third-degree distri-
bution of cocaine and third-de-
gree distribution of cocaine in a
school zone. He was released after
posting bail.
The 48-year-old buyer, a
Voorhees man, was charged with
a third-degree possession of co-
caine and released on a summons.
On Feb. 14, Evesham police,
through an ongoing investigation
into the sale of marijuana, exe-
cuted a search warrant at a home
in the 200 block of Locust Avenue.
During the search-warrant exe-
cution, slightly less than two
pounds of marijuana was seized.
Also, seized was money, a motor
vehicle and items used in the sale
and manufacturing of drugs.
A 64-year-old Marlton man was
arrested and charged with third-
degree distribution of marijuana,
second-degree distribution of
marijuana in a park zone and
fourth-degree possession of over
50 grams of marijuana. He was
released on a summons.
A 30-year-old female resident of
Marlton was charged with third-
degree possession of a narcotic
and a disorderly persons charge
for possession of marijuana
under 50 grams. She was released
on a summons.

On Wednesday, Feb. 15, the
Lenape Regional High School Dis-
trict Board of Education passed a
resolution to move its annual
school election from April to No-
vember, beginning this year.
The move places school board
candidates on the November bal-
lot and eliminates the need for a
public vote on the proposed
school budget if it remains at or
below the states 2 percent levy
cap.
All eight LRHSD sending dis-
tricts passed similar resolutions
in recent weeks, which effectively
moved the regional school board
election to November. While not
required, Lenape regionals reso-
lution demonstrates the districts
strong support for the move,
which in the view of the board of
education, is in the best interest
of students and the regional com-
munities.
This is a groundbreaking
change for New Jerseys public
school districts, including Lenape
regional, LRHSD Board of Edu-
cation President Ted Shinske
said. The change will save tax-
payer dollars as we eliminate the
cost of the school budget vote and
reduce the cost of school board
elections by holding them in con-
junction with the annual Novem-
ber elections.
We estimate that moving the
election and eliminating the
budget vote will save more than
$56,000 in election costs per year
for four years for the regional dis-
trict alone, Lenape Regional
High School District Business Ad-
ministrator James Hager said.
State statute requires that a
districts decision to move the an-
nual election must remain in ef-
fect for a minimum of four years.
Hager added that, although the
budget vote is eliminated, dis-
tricts are required to follow many
of the same steps they followed to
prepare and submit a budget in
past years. The district will hold a
public hearing on March 28, fol-
lowed by a board vote.
Budget information, including
tax impact, will be posted on the
district website following the
March 28 vote.

board and budget elections and

in our opinion
T
oday marks a special day at
Elauwit Media, publisher of
The Sun newspapers. We wel-
come West Windsor and Robbinsville
to our family.
These two additions bring our num-
ber of newspapers to 15.
We serve the communities of Had-
donfield, Moorestown, Cherry Hill
East, Marlton, Medford, Voorhees,
Washington Township, Shamong, Mt.
Laurel and Tabernacle in South Jer-
sey.
Now, in Central Jersey, we serve
Lawrence, Montgomery, Hopewell,
West Windsor and Robbinsville.
Most importantly, wed like to thank
everyone for the support we have re-
ceived over the years.
We started with one newspaper, in
Haddonfield, in 2004. Our goal always
has been to provide our readers and
advertisers with the best service possi-
ble. We strive every week to bring you
local news that is important to you.
From coverage of local meetings and
events to features on interesting peo-
ple and activities, we want you to look
forward to receiving your Sun in the
mail every week.
But the true measure of success has
been the involvement of the communi-
ties in their local Suns. We ask our
readers to send us news they want to
share with their friends and neigh-
bors. When students achieve greatness
in the classroom or on the playing
field or when civic groups work to
raise money for a good cause, we want
to hear about it and then tell every-
one else about it.
Weve managed to grow rapidly dur-
ing one of the most difficult economic
times in our nations history and
during a time that has been especially
difficult for many newspapers.
We want to continue to grow. And to
do that, we know we have to publish
newspapers that reflect the values and
priorities of the communities they
serve.
We thank you for your continued
support.

The winner, Peter Minear, Reading, Pa.,
finished with a score of 3.5.
Tom Bartell, also of Pennsylvania, fin-
ished in a second place tie with Ian Schoch,
who came up from Maryland to participate
in the tournament.
Both players scored a 3.0.
All competitors competing in the tour-
nament were either masters or senior mas-
ters.
Karl Dehmelt, a master from Allentown,
Pa., said it was fantastic to have a tourna-
ment of this caliber in the Delaware Valley.
Tournaments, even when held in
Philadelphia by the chess federation, dont
feature this many master players, he said.
I decided to come down because its
rare to have a tournament around here
that features all masters. It was great to
play against people of my own strength,
you tend to learn more when youre play-
ing against the best competition, Dehmelt
said. Unless there is a big tournament
that is run by the continental chess tourna-
ment, you dont find many masters around
here. You might find one or two masters at
an event, but to find 14 is phenomenal.
Dehmelt finished fourth in the tourna-
ment.
The master was once a senior master in
the 80s, but has since fallen to only 2,295
points.
In the world of ranked chess, your point
ranking is akin to hitters batting average.
The higher number you have, the better a
player you are, Gorman said.
Points are either won or lost through
competing against other ranked players in
federally sanctioned tournaments, Gor-
man said.
The higher ranked player you beat, the
more points you win, he said.
But woe to the player who loses to a
lower-ranked opponent.
Points can be won or lost in a split sec-
ond; either a brilliant trap with the queen
can send you skyrocketing up the ladder or
leaving your bishop exposed can send you
tumbling down into oblivion.
A master is a player who has won 2,200
points and a senior master has won 2,400.
At his peak, Gorman said he had 2,550. The
highest player in the world at that time had
2,800.
Gorman started to seriously play chess
when he was 13 and living in Israel. The
now 49-year-old senior master has said its
been a passion of his ever since.
The Gorman family recently moved into
Evesham Township from Virginia, he said,
and he quickly found there were few oppor-
tunities for events here.
Gorman, a Virginia champion back in
2010, needed to play, but the opportunities
just werent available in South Jersey. But,
hey, a tournament director can hold tour-
naments himself, Gorman thought, so why
not one in his own home?
This was a rated tournament. I adver-
tised that it was being held and we attract-
ed a bunch of masters, Gorman said.
Were looking to make it a recurring thing
here in town.
If it gets really big, maybe Gary Kas-
parov and Anatoly Karpov will show up at
his door with Big Blue in a wagon. A chess
master can dream, right?
Interested in sharpening your chess
match skills and looking to climb up the
chess rung?
Check out Gormans weekly tourna-
ments in Voorhees, which are rated G/10.
Theyre held on Wednesdays from 7 to 9 p.m.
at Coffee Works, Voorhees Town Center.
