History of Girl Scout Cookies


December 1917 Five years after Juliette Gordon Low founded Girl Scouting in the U.S., troops begin baking and selling cookies to finance activities. The first sale was that of the Mistletoe Troop in Muskogee, Oklahoma. 1920s The American Girl magazine, published by Girl Scouts national headquarters, featured a cookie recipe by Florence E. Neil, a local director in Chicago. Neil estimated that for around 26 cents to 36 cents, troops could bake six- to seven-dozen cookies that could in turn be sold by troops for 25 or 30 cents per dozen. 1930s Greater Philadelphia became the first council to sell commercially-baked cookies. A year later, the Girl Scout Federation of Greater New York began using a die in the shape of a trefoil and using the words Girl Scout Cookies on the box. In 1937, more than 125 Girl Scout councils reported holding cookie sales. 1960s Baby boomers expanded Girl Scout membership and cookie sale volume increased significantly. Girl Scout cookie boxes came in printed aluminum foil or cellophane to protect the cookies and preserve their freshness. 1990s The national organization introduced official age-appropriate awards for Brownie, Junior, Cadette and Senior Girl Scouts for participating in cookie activities, including an annual Girl Scout Cookie Activity Pin. 2000s Girl Scout cookie boxes are bold and bright and capture the spirit of Girl Scouting. All cookies are kosher and five varieties now have absolutely no trans fat (hydrogenated oil). 20102011 Girl Scouts continue to sell eight varieties, including three mandatory ones (Thin Mints, Do-si-dos and Trefoils). In 2011, Girl Scouts adapt a new direct-sales model reducing the old method of order and delivery to one step. With Cookies Now! Girl Scouts have cookies in-hand as they go door-to-door, providing customers with instant cookie gratification. ###
