EDITORS NOTE: HEADLINERS l LEADING ENTERTAINMENT NEWS

Anyone who says the entertainment industry is a slow changer must be a bit of a slow changer themselves. Last year the rising star was Adele, the viral music video was from LMFAO, the new popular genre was dubstep, the awards sweep was done by Katy Perry, the joke was Rebecca Black, the New Zealand music dominators were Six60, the big breakdown was Charlie Sheen and the massive movie was the final Harry Potter flick. Within ten months, all of these categories would have been re-filled quicker than a small coke at Subway. Time will one tell what movie, music, and televisions big performers and productions will be - and we will be covering it. Pulse welcomes 2012 Arts Captain Stevie Woodwark to the editorial team. Ryan Poole and Samuel Williams have also come on as Deputy Editors for this year. As always, if you have story ideas or are interested in writing, contact Mr Cotton, myself, Stevie or any of the other Pulse writers. So far the world hasnt ended, which means keep an eye out for coming issues this year and welcome to 2012. Prashan Casinader, Editor

PROS AND CONS l

NEW TWO AND A HALF MEN

PRO: An obviously not right in the head Charlie Sheen is no longer on the show. CON: Lets be honest, keeping him on the show in that state would have probably stopped it from being a repetitive bore. PRO: Now Hollywood actor Aston Kutcher is on board. CON: A Hollywood actor... who has not made a decent film, um...ever. PRO: At least the rest of the cast remains on the show. CON: Looking bored and saying one-liners that would be funny about 10 years ago. PRO: Writers of the show can now try and take it in a different direction. CON: Charlie Sheen tried to take his life in a different direction and look what happened to him.

REVIEWED l LATEST ALBUMS, MOVIES AND SHOWS

Lana Del Ray (Lana Del Ray), BMG 25-year-old Lana Del Ray has been the subject of a lot of media scrutiny recently but its refreshing to hear a new sound that doesnt mirror that of bubblegum pop stars like Katy Perry, but the album is let down by repetitiveness and a voice which turns chipmunk in most of the tracks. She manages to avoid her shrill sounds on tracks like Video Games and Summertime Sadness, but Off To The Races and (especially) Diet Mountain Dew are complete let downs. Overall, Del Ray comes off as Florence Welch meets Amy Winehouse, but on an much lower level. The potential is there, but the album is average at best. Reviewer: Ryan Poole Rating: 5/10 --------------------------------+ (Ed Sheeran) Ed Sheeran is an English rapper and singer/ songwriter who recently burst onto the scene with his single, The A Team from his album, +. The album has a lot of great tracks, and the lyrics are all about parts of life. As well as The A Team (an acoustic song that is stunningly written and has a melody that is hard not to listen to), Wake Me Up is also a highlight - a simple piano track about a girl (as most songs are!). The track Drunk wasnt great - its electronic sounds seeming artificial. The album has a nice mix of acoustic and electronic, and I think we will be hearing more of Sheeran.

TOP PICK l HUGO >>>>>>>>>>>

Hugo (PG, Starring Asa Butterfield, Chlo Moretz, Ben Kingsley) A very long time ago, the word most commonly associated with films was 'magic.' Nowadays it could just as easily be 'money.' It is ironic then, that a reminder of the magic of cinema comes in the form of Hugo, which, thanks to an atrocious marketing campaign, at first glance appears to be no more than a brainless children's film, in 3D no less. Set in 1930s Paris, Hugo tells the story of young orphan Hugo Cabaret (Asa Butterfield) and his exploits in an enormous Asa Butterfield as young train station in search of a key to a machine orphan, Hugo Caberet left behind by his father. Along the way, he meets Isabelle (Chlo Moretz from Kick Ass) and is swept up in a journey involving her godfather (Sir Ben Kingsley) and the very creation of cinema. Sacha Baron Cohen takes what could have been a throwaway role as a clumsy station master and makes it wonderfully funny. Butterfield is great, but 15-year-old Moretz outshines him, acting with incredible confidence and charisma. This is a passion project for director Martin Scorsese, and it shows. Everything about it is lovingly crafted; from the costumes, to the sets, to the art direction. It also is, without a shadow of a doubt, the best use of the 3D format so far (a point Avatar director James Cameron agrees with). Hugo is unashamedly old-fashioned, a rare treasure in a market polluted with rapping penguins and auto-tuned chipmunks. A children's film this may be, but it is The Godfather of children's films; a perfectly crafted masterpiece steeped in rarefied class and unmatched beauty. In one word, magic.
