Introduction to Tennis: iii. Tennis is a hand eye coordinated sport that is played by all ages of people. This sport can be an easy relaxing game to play, or can be an intense and difficult game to play depending on who you are playing and how good you are at it. The game requires a racket, a tennis ball and between two to four people to play. (See how the game is played on page 4.) v. Forehands: Before you can play the game, you must first learn some basic ground strokes and other shots in order to play the game. The first and most basic stroke is your forehand stroke. Your forehand is your dominant hand that are the most comfortable with. Basically the hand you write with. You hold the racket straight out with the strings on the racket facing the ball flying toward you. You basically shift your body sideways, turn your racket back, and swing that the ball when it comes to you as shown in figure 1. You must follow through with your shot and Make a full swing to your other side of your 1 Figure Body.

Backhands: Your next basic ground stroke is the backhand. When the ball travels to the other side of your body, opposite side of your forehand side, you must be able to make that shot. Swing your racket back using both hands, lean into your shot and swing through like you would with a golf club. Figure 2 shows an example.

Surves: To start off a game, the proper way to begin is to surve the ball to your opponent. When you surve, you want to stand back on the service line1 of the court and surve diagonal into the box in front of the base line2 of the court opposite to you. Basically you throw the ball high in the air, swing your racket back behind your head and when the ball gets close to you, you swing the racket that the ball, snapping

your wrist to aim the ball down and into the box you are aiming into. This is shown in figure 3.

Volleys: During times when you are too close to the net where the ball is coming at you and you are unable to let it bounce, you can do whats called a volley where you hold your racket out and hit the ball in mid air, sending it back to your opponent as shown in figure 4.

How the game is played:

To play this game first requires either two people to play a singles match as shown in figure 5 Or four people to play a doubles match. To start the game, one person has to make a surve diagonal to his or her opponent on the other side of the court. With a doubles match, you have the one person surving and the second person by the net, away from the other persons path for surving as shown in figure 6. To score, the game goes to 15, 30, 40, or if it is a tie, 40-40, then it is considered a deuce. When your in a deuce, you must play til one of the teams gets to two points in a row first. The first point is called ad in if you have the point, and if your opponent has the point, it is then called ad out. Then once you win another point, it is game.
