World Studies I Mr.

Irwin American Colonies and Colonial Life Gaming Unit Essential Content Questions: Who came and why? Where did they come from and how? What did they bring with them? What did they find here in America? How were they changed by the experience? How did they change America? Essential Skill Objectives: Create, organize, and maintain an Interactive Student Notebook (ISN). Be able to navigate and utilize interactive software and technology to enhance learning experience, as well as how to combine the use of these resources with Interactive Student Notebooks (ISN). Creation of a plan of attack, which includes: the use of a calendar the ability to plan ahead and use time effectively. THESE FIRST THREE OBJECTIVES ARE ALL GEARED TOWARDS THE CREATION OF A MORE INDEPENDENT AND EFFICIENT STUDENT THAT BECOMES THE DRIVING FORCE BEHIND THEIR EDUCATION, WHICH WILL MAKE LEARNING MORE AUTHENTIC. Unit Requirements: Students must achieve level 5 in at least 3 branches. You must complete level 5 in at least 1 of the knowing trunks You must complete level 5 in BOTH of the doing trunks Students must achieve level 4 in at least 2 of the remaining branches. Students must achieve level 3 in the last remaining branch. Grading System Level Point Totals: Level 1: 5 Points each (part of ISN grade = Participation grade = 15% of your final grade) Level 2: 10 points each (part of ISN grade = Participation grade = 15% of your final grade) Level 3: 15 points each (Homework grade = 15% of your final grade) Level 4: 20 points each (Homework grade = 15% of your final grade) Level 5 (minus the final project): 30 points each (Project grade = 40% of your final grade) Final Project: 100 points (Project Grade = 40% of your final grade) Playing the Game We will be working through this first game as a class to a certain extent. We will discuss how to form a plan using the Game Calendar and how to budget your time as well as how you will incorporate your ISN as well as your planner with this game. You must beat level 1 before you progress to level 2 and level 2 before level 3, and so on and so on. We will have scheduled ISN checks as well as scheduled appointments in which your progress in the game will be checked and entered by Mr. Irwin. For all things Level 3 & up you will need to submit them to Mr. Irwin so they can be graded and your progress can be checked.

Interactive Lessons/ Final Project (Doing) COMPUTER NEEDED FOR ALL OF ACTIVITIES ON THIS LEVEL Complete the World Quiz (Oceans and Continents) on the website listed on the handout. You must print the final screen showing that you got at least 33 out of 36 points before this task is considered complete. COMPUTER Work through the game The Jamestown Adventure at least two times. Complete your table of contents and numbering of pages for ISN, also label different sections of ISN as needed

Listen and take notes during the guided lecture on the New England Colonies & color in the map of the New England Colonies (RS)

Listen and take notes during the guided lecture on the Mid-Atlantic Colonies & color in the map of the Mid-Atlantic Colonies (RS)

Listen and take notes during the guided lecture on the Southern Colonies & color in the map of the Southern Colonies (RS)

Listen and take notes during the guided lecture on Colonial Life (RS)

Level 2

Complete design of cover page (front & back) as outlined in the assignment given by Mr. Irwin

Complete the reading on the New England Colonies and complete the attached homework sheet entitled The New England Region (Cut and paste the homework into your ISN) Read The Mayflower Compact Reading. Take notes on the reading and describe why the Mayflower Compact had to be written (RS). Create a list of laws that you think would be necessary in a new colony in the New World (LS).

Complete the reading on the Mid-Atlantic Colonies and complete the attached homework sheet entitled The Mid-Atlantic Region (Cut and paste the homework into your ISN as instructed by Mr. Irwin)

Complete the reading on the Southern Colonies and complete the attached homework sheet entitled The Southern (Cut and paste the homework into your ISN)

Create drawings/comics in the grid provided that represent each of the groups of people discussed in the guided lecture (LS)

Level 3

Maintain the labeling of each section as you work through the game using your ISN as your guide. Each section should have: Heading Date Page #(s) Category & Level #

When working through the Underground Railroad Student Activity LIFE ON THE PLANTATION SECTION select the Growing up in Slavery link in the bottom right corner. After reading through the different roles on a plantation answer the 3 questions and write your letter (see handout in correct box) **Should be done in ISN (Questions (RS), Letter (LS)) COMPUTER

Complete the reading Penns Holy Experiment and answer the questions (RS). Create a cartoon that illustrates what a Quaker is, and why they were looked down upon by other groups (LS).

Complete the reading Carry Me Back to Ole Virginny. Answer the questions on the handout in your ISN (RS), then write a letter as a Virginia slave owner telling someone from New England if you would free your slaves and why? (LS) ** See handout for instructions

Work through the Underground Railroad Student Activity LIFE ON THE PLANTATION SECTION and complete the guide provided. Answer the questions in complete sentences in your ISN (RS). Then draw a mural in your ISN (LS) that depicts life on a southern plantation COMPUTER Using the textbook History Alive! (Orange Book) Pages 66 & 67 take notes on the two sections (RS), then create a two section foldable (see Mr. Irwin) that talks about the two lifestyles

Level 4

Complete at least 5 entries into your ISN in which you complete both a right side (input) and left side (output) for that entry

Design a quilt square complete with bordering symbols to be included as part of the 8th grade Fabric of a Nation quilting project. Notes on what you want to include (RS), rough draft sketch (LS). ** See handout for directions.

Use textbook History Alive! (Orange Book) Pages 51-53 Read the sections on 2 of the 3 colonies listed and take notes on the reading (RS) then create a visual advertisement for those colonies (LS)

Using the textbook History Alive! (Orange Book) Pages 56-58 Read the sections on 2 of the 3 colonies listed and take notes on the reading (RS) then create a visual advertisement for those colonies (LS)

Level 5 (Boss Battles)

Create a foldable that gives information about all three colonial regions that we will be studying in this class (see Mr. Irwin for instructions) BE AN EXPERT INTERACTIVE STUDENT NOTEBOOK USER
