Activity Insight

Contributed by: Laurinda Smith Manager of Data Services Office of Institutional Research

Like all SLU colleges, schools and centers, the School of Medicine is implementing Activity Insight, a university-wide, webbased information management system enabling the collection, organization, sharing, analysis and presentation of critical data regarding faculty scholarship, research, and service activities. No other SLU university-wide system is able to capture all these data elements in one database. Additionally, key faculty data stored in Banner and eRS (e.g. teaching activity, course loads, sponsored research, etc.) will eventually be uploaded and integrated into the Activity Insight database, enabling departments and faculty to create customized reports informing numerous institutional initiatives. In fact, Activity Insight has already been modified significantly to better meet the information needs of the School of Medicine and the University. Activity Insight will be used to simplify and standardize internal and external data collection and reporting tasks that support institution-wide academic planning, assessment and accreditation efforts. All full-time faculty in all SLU colleges, schools and centers are required to have their data entered into Activity Insight. Adjunct/part-time faculty in some units will also be required to participate, depending on particular accreditation and reporting needs. Your department's Activity Insight liaison will contact you with instructions for inputting data into the system, navigating the system, etc. Dr. Angela Sharkey is leading the SOM's implementation of Activity Insight; you can contact her with any questions.

Spotlight on: Nadim Kanafani, M.D.

Assistant Professor, Department of Pediatrics
Dr. Kanafani recently spearheaded a grant for the Schools and Communities in Partnership Project (SCIPP) awarded through the Missouri Foundation for Health and partnered with Saint Louis University (SLU) and Cardinal Glennon Childrens Medical Center (CGCMC). As project manager, he will lead a two-year study in the Jennings School District, a predominantly African American community in North St. Louis County. The purpose of the school-based, community-linked health initiative is to reduce personal behaviors and environmental factors which lead to obesity and tobacco use/exposure. With the help of SLU and CGCMC and other community and governmental agencies, the goal of the project is to help implement a community that supports healthy nutrition and tobacco avoidance. Dr. Kanafani and this grant program were recently highlighted in the St. Louis Business Journal.

You can still read along with the excellent novels chosen for this years program. Novembers title is The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot. This novel focuses on the origin of Hela cells and is a must-read for those involved in medical research. A quarterly review of discussion points will be included in future newsletters.

SPOTLIGHT ON WOMEN IN MEDICINE AND SCIENCE (SWIMS)

The first annual SWIMS event took place Tuesday, September 27th. Dr. Etta Pisano, Dean of Medical University at South Carolina College of Medicine and Vice President for Medical Affairs, was the inaugural visiting professor. The program provided an opportunity for the School of Medicine to focus attention on some of the talented female faculty here at Saint Louis University. Our visiting professor, Dr. Etta Pisano, a radiologist with expertise in breast imaging, the mother of four, and an avid sailor, discussed her career path which has included overseeing the largest clinical trial of breast imaging, development of a unique imaging technique for which she now holds a patent, and experience in leadership in academic medicine. In addition, she reviewed some of the unique experiences she has had as the mother of four and the spouse of a physician.

Michael Anne Gratton, Ph.D., Professor, Department of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery, spoke about her research in mouse cochlea and her insights into the opportunities at SLU SOM as well as her shared experiences with effective collaboration and mentoring students and trainees in research.
Ghazala Hayat, M.D., Professor, Department of Neurology & Psychiatry, shared her experiences as a faculty member of diverse background and the obstacles she encountered early in her career as a woman in medicine and a mother and a non-U.S. trained physician. She spoke about the transitions of her career path and her commitment to making SLU and the St. Louis community a better place to live. Mary F. Ruh, Ph.D., Professor Emeritus, Department of Pharmacology, presented an overview of the promotions process at SLU. Her insights into the development of the current academic checklist, the promotions process and the opportunities for collaboration and career success at SLU SOM were encouraging to all in attendance. This program provided a terrific opportunity for networking with others in the academic community of SLU. If you werent able to attend this year, we hope to see you at next years SWIMS.
