The prefix PSEUDO- (from Greek lying, false) is used to mark something as false, fraudulent, or pretending to be something it is not. (wikipedia) PSEUDODESIGN is a tumblelog run by CLAUDIO MODERINI, an interaction design director and researcher, with a background in architecture and industrial design that is pretending to be simple a designer. I like to think that design is continuously evolving and that the best examples of the design culture can not be found in the mainstream culture, they are not on the surface but they are hidden within a number of peripheral manifestations, as expression of the virtuous combination of creativity and passion, tinkering and conceptual thinking, a design that does not need to be pure, neither easy, that is hybrid and ambiguous, sometimes obscure and artificial, but that gives a meaning to our existence. WHAT I DONT LIKE: cutting edge, mainstream, cool, easy to use, good design, user driven, made in, target, idea, sustainable, walled garden WHAT I LIKE: emerging, tinkering, thinking, engaging, made by, person, desire, conceptual. responsible design, self sustainable, open source

I am trying to work-out a tentative mental model: _the HEAD is the urban setting whose core is the knowledge (IT); _the TENTACLES are the GRASS-ROOT EXPERIENCES carried out mainly in rural areas, based on basic survival needs; _the BODY is the stomach, the digestive mechanism that transforms the food into energy. The OCTOPUS has a strong potential to grow. DESIGN is neither in the head, nor in the tentacles, it is the CONNECTIVE TISSUE that connects the HEAD (strategic thinking) with the TENTACLES (action through experience) passing by the STOMACH (intuition). DESIGN is a combination of CREATIVITY and BUSINESS, both IN ACTION, whose role is to give a meaning to technology by distilling and sedimenting the grass-root experiences transforming them first into INNOVATIVE, VIABLE and SUSTAINABLE PRODUCT and SERVICES and then into SCALABLE and EXPORTABLE solutions based on BRAND VALUES and INTERFACES.

Literally it means OFF CENTRE, that doesnt have the same centre; of an orbit man say that is excentric when it is not perfectly circular. In a figurative sense and in the everyday language for excentric we mean an INUSUAL BEHAVIOR in opposition to what we mean normal and for extension an excentric person expresses a UNIQUE, particular way of life, and thereafter PARTIAL, made of personal needs, actions and aesthetics. And is the dialogue and the ambiguity between these two interpretations that leads to new and unsuspected design directions: on one side a VIRTUOUS EXCENTRICITY that follow a nonconventional trajectory centred on socially relevant issue, such as SUSTAINABILITY, ETHICS etc. (in alternative to the dominant orbit based on market and business paradigms);

on the other side EXCENTRICITY interpreted as extravagant and bizarre behaviour, highly individual, as implicit PROVOCATION. From a design perspective the issue can be developed both emphasizing the PROGRAMMARIC aspect, through the choice of a design approach that escapes from the usual orbit, identifying specificities related to the way-oflife, the places, the cultures and/or particular contingencies, and by working on the meaning of an AESTHETICS that goes beyond the assessment of the others but follows a personal trajectory that moves from interior and/or subjective motivations. EXCENTRIC DESIGN means to SYNTHONIZE yourself with the emergent dynamics of the CONTEMPORARY SOCIETY that in recent years has seen a strong emphasis on socialization and experience sharing and that today reveals new paradigms based on the multiplication of point of view, on the FRAGMENTATION of the experience. EXCENTRIC DESIGN as original interpretation of global scale issues MADE BY the people (not consumers or users) through acts of pure EXISTENCE. EXCENTRIC DESIGN means to think about the aspects of the project that go beyond the mainstream vision, that manifest not a deny, but an indifference towards any convention, that represent a UNIQUE and VITAL point of view, that give space to qualities and subjective behaviours, To personal needs, but also manias, phobias, fears and idiosyncrasies.
